        • Yeah at stock settings on the E495, I had trouble playing League of Legends at 1080p/60fps. It was stuttering at 40fps.

That really shouldn't happen, since the game will run on a $75 Athlon 200GE dual core with Vega 3 graphics at 90 fps.

        • -1

That's why you should stay away from Lenovo

    • +3

Yes it has been nerfed quite badly but you can do it massive favours with Ryzen Adj and dual channel RAM: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/267196316860416001/60…

      My guide: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/471113

Despite these upgrades, it will still lose to a desktop Ryzen 3 3200G with desktop dual channel 3200mhz quite considerably - 40-60fps difference in League of Legends in my testing.

      • Great work! I wanted to know what Ryzen Adj might do (without trying myself).

Sometimes i get less lower and unstable FPS, when the bios setting for "CPU Power Management" is enabled. But only sometimes, say 50/50, in my small number of manual tests using fornite. When I set that configuration is set is disabled, I always get higher and stable FPS. Any ideas?

        • Disable power management? I did all my testing with power management disabled.

    • Damn that sucks.

  • Leveno says you need to chat to order via zippay, would cash rewards still work?

    • +1

No. This is specifically mentioned on the CR website:

Purchases made through Lenovo's student store, including staff, corporate and negotiated offers (phone/email/chat) are ineligible for Cashback.

  • Hey TA, any chance of an irresistible deal on an E490s or X1E Gen 1?

  • TA always comes through with the great deals

Hi TA, if I customised the specs, would the coupon and cash back still work?

    Thanks!

    • I customise up to 1335 and then when I added coupon it actually went up to $1400 lol.
Pretty sure cash back is a seperate company so u get 12% back of whatever the total is

      • Same, it went up in price. If its $1400 including the upgrades, does that mean I get 12% cash back on the $1400? :/

    • +1

Hi scanzy. Cashback will work in whatever configuration you choose with this code.

      • +2

Thanks TA, just purchased one with upgrading 2x 16gb DDR4 RAM, Ryzen 7 and 512 SSD. Comes to $1,444.02 including GST. I received $173.28 back at cash rewards. :D

Bought mine from the last deal and the laptop had backlight bleed problems. I question their QA process because they mentioned that they were not able to check the quality of the replacement before it is sent out. Still waiting…

Thank you very much TA, i bought one for the wife as she needs it for Uni.

  • -5

Amazing price. I really really want to buy this laptop, but I have already got 2 laptops plus one desktop at home, on top of that, I have a laptop from the company which I can bring it home if I want; I have also got a Tablet which kids can use for study & play… I don't feel like I need another laptop, but the price is so good. what should I do???

    • +8

you should tell us more about your gadgets, please list the spec of your laptops, desktops and tablets. complete specs.
and when where how much did you buy them.

    • Yawn

    • +1

Tell us your address. What time you will be out and what security you have. Considering how many you already have you will not miss a few being nicked ;P

  • I paid about the same price for an Ideapad L340 couple of days ago, almost similar specs except the 128gg SSD it comes with and larger screen size (15.6), TN panel though :(

  • Is this faster than i5? Just checking how it compares to that. Thanks in advance!!

  • Do these covert into a tablet? Like does the keyboard detach or fold back?

    • No

  • is this laptop has "backlit keyboard" ?

    • Not on this laptop, no.

I have E595 from the last deal, be aware this realtek wifi card has issue.
It keeps dropping wifi connection every 20 seconds or so then reconnect very frustrating.
I'm still looking for the solution to fix the problem (don't want to change the wifi card though).

    • I have this issue too with my E495. I've tried every fix online. I've given up. I'm getting an Intel 9260 WiFi card (about $20). The issues with the Realtek card are well documented from many different manufacturers, Acer, HP, Lenovo etc.

  • My order says "Ships between 29/08/2019 ~ 30/08/2019". Do these typically ship out sooner than this? I thought this might just be a worst case scenario type of shipping date I'm hoping.

    • Yep, same here. Mine's saying it'll be shipped on 23rd August and estimated to arrive on 3rd September. Are these being assembled upon order somewhere offshore?

      • Yes, assemble in china.

        • Damn, I start a new job in 2 weeks and need a laptop haha. Oh well.

    • +3

Last deal mine arrived 16 days after order

  • Hi Guys - First post here,

Just wanted some advice on which you thought was better:

    1. (upgraded ThinkPad E495 / 14" FHD / AMD Ryzen 5 3500U / 512GB SSD / 16GB RAM / $994 Shipped @ Lenovo - https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-edge/…

    OR

    1. Asus - VivoBook S14 - i7/1.8GHZ - 16GB - 256GB SSD - 14" FHD / $1,199 @ Bing Lee - https://www.binglee.com.au/asus-s430fa-eb103t-vivobook-s14

    2. Your suggestion?

    Thanks!!!

    • VivoBook looks quite a bit better, faster processor, lighter.
With cash back, E495 with those specs would come down to 874 I think. I also think some scope to add 3rd party RAM (see links in comments above, I think about $60, so might make it more like 814). So quite different prices too.
Might be some other alternatives that use the Ebay 20% off today with those specs as well.

      • Thanks Kees2000. I did upgrade the E495 with the cashback - granted I put the SSD up to 512GB but all changed the ran to 16GB from *GB and it all came for $994. So yeah with the 256SSD it's probably more like the 814. So yeah nearly $400 difference.

        • agree. why upgrade ram to 16gb now? unless 100% sure you know you will use all 16gb. just take basic and upgrade slowly in another 6 months. 8gb is more than enough for most people. and 256 ssd also enough

          • @CyberMurning: Thanks ChiMot.

I've found with the multi programs and excess tabs that 8GB don't cut it. So i'm keen for 16GB if I can find a good deal and want to keep the SSD at 256GB for some future proofing.

            • @mckaytimothy: I added 8gb to one of these when I bought it. It cost $59 and took ten minutes to install.

Don't buy the ram through lenovo

              • @Mallard: Thanks for the Tip. Do you void warranty if you do your own installation though?

Separately, what about the ASUS vs Lenovo factor? Is the ASUS with the the better processor with it even though its more expensive or just go cheaper and upgrade (not much difference in performance?)

                • @mckaytimothy: No you don't as there is a spare slot. It's obvious when you open the nine screws and take the back off. It just pushes in.

Can't give tech help on your second question. But I've been using mine for a month and with 16gb and a ssd it's fast. This is general use laptop for me but I think you have the same needs?

I have the bigger e595 (15 inch) which apparently had a spare slot to add another drive. Search through the old posts on here for "E495" and it might confirm if there is a second bay in this one. I'm OK with what I have as most of my stuff is in the cloud now.

The OP usually comes along with a similar deal on the bigger one.

  • How is the display on this laptop? I had a look at Lenovo laptops at JB Hifi and some of them were almost blurry.

They don't sell Thinkpads of course, so hopefully this model is a lot better.

    • Well the worst part is the brightness. Too dim to use in a park, hard to use on a train, fine in a library or office or classroom.

Only 250 nits IPS display. Not well calibrated of course.

    • Having one, I admit it's not that bright. It's an indoor device, but that what I needed.

But is not blurry. Very crisp display.

Most of the negs about this say screen/drive/ram/battery could be better. But if you fix all of those then it's a different tier of laptop. A Corrola is not as good as a BMW 1-series but it's half the price

  • +1

Thank you TA. Just purchased one. SSD upgraded to 512GB. Let's hope that it tracks through Cashrewards properly. My order says "Ships between 29/08/2019 to 30/08/2019". Does anyone with previous Lenovo experience knows when I can expect to receive it, thanks?

    • +2

Took me about a month to get mine last time.

      • +1

Thank you StrayfireX. I asked because I'm going to Rugby World Cup in mid Sept so hopefully it will arrive before then. Also, Cashrewards tracking has now arrived. Thanks again, TA.

        • Awesome. May I ask how much the cashback amount was with your config?

          • @tightarse: Tracking email states "Expected Cashback AUD 104.28" & "Expected Approval 11 Nov 2019." Any reason why you ask?

            • @Apsley: Not at all. I was actually more interested in knowing how much the code discounted the config you chose, but I guess I can reverse engineer it from this info lol. Great deal :)

              • @tightarse: @tightarse I was puzzled by your question. Reading @Shwayne’s comment at 9.08am today on your post for the exact same configuration earlier this morning https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/480104 I think I now know what you were asking.

@Shwayne states that “the coupon gives you a fixed $610 discount, so extras and upgrades are added at full price.” @Shwayne is spot on. I upgraded the SSD and accordingly paid more but the discount was still $610. ie I paid full price for the bigger SSD. There was no discount for that upgrade. Hope this answers your question. Thank you again for your post which enabled me to buy this laptop

  • HONLENOVO i think works on this too
nevermind not a greater discount/does not stack

  • +1

Thanks TA. I bought the base model after umming and ahing for a while about whether to upgrade the RAM and the hard disk.

I don't want to do post-purchase upgrades any more as I've had too many bad experiences (esp with RAM upgrades). Plus I tend to keep using devices for many years so it's often worth getting the best available at the time.

In case this helps anyone else, I decided not to upgrade the RAM to 16GB (8GB x 2) after doing a bit of research - especially the Lifehacker article: Performance Tests Show That 16GB Of RAM Is Overkill..

Then for the harddrive, I figure that by the time 256GB SSD becomes too small, the chances are that 8GB would also be too small and it would be time to replace the laptop anyway. In the meantime, there's a MicroSD card slot that I could use if I need more drive space.

    • Interesting! Is there a newer one than 2015 as I Imagine its had quite a few changes with speeds and chip optimization since then. Plus isn't one of the main issues with 8GB the amount winder 10 64 needs as a baseline?

      • There are a few more recent articles, plus discussions on the forums (eg Tom's Hardware, Reddit). This Laptopmag articles is from last year and indicates that you'd only need more than 8GB if you're into high-end gaming at the max setting. The forums also say more or less the same thing - if you want a gaming laptop, opt for 16GB.

Despite my large hoard of games through ozb, I don't really get the chance to play games any more, let alone high-end games at high setting, so I guess I don't need 16GB…. Plus I don't think this is a gaming laptop anyway so you're probably better off looking at other laptops if that what you want.

Bear in mind it's slightly different for the Ryzen 3500u, since as an APU it uses the ram as Vram for games and running in 2x8gb dual channel doubles usable bandwidth for the iGPU, which can boost GPU performance as much as 30-40%.

Not to mention when gaming with only 8gb of ram, the iGPU uses a portion of the ram up, so in reality you may only be left with 6gb of ram once the iGPU takes its share.

Running in dual channel also slightly improves CPU performance on Zen+, though this is closer to 2-5% when fully CPU-bound.

That being said if you're just running chrome and microsoft word + general productivity 8gb is perfectly suitable.

    • I figure that by the time 256GB SSD becomes too small, the chances are that 8GB would also be too small and it would be time to replace the laptop anyway.

With SSDs even laptops that are 10yrs old still run pretty snappy today, i’d say unless you have physically damaged it all you would need to do is replaced the battery and you should be set. Just upgrade the storage and RAM yourself when you think you need to, should be pretty easy on a Thinkpad. Parts should be cheaper in a few years anyway.

I don't want to do post-purchase upgrades any more as I've had too many bad experiences (esp with RAM upgrades).

Haha yeah there’s a few models with ridiculously placed RAM slots. I work in computer servicing/repair and upgrading the RAM in one model involved taking out the entire motherboard as the slot was on the underside of the board and you couldn’t remove the bottom casing (keyboard lifted off for servicing). Most frustrating part about it was the underside of the casing had a panel outline where the RAM slot was but I guess to save costs they didn’t actually cut it and make it into a removable panel.

Looking at the service manual for the E495 it looks like the entire bottom cover simply lifts off and then you can easily access the M.2 storage and the RAM slot so I wouldn’t stress about any pain involved with DIY upgrades on this one :)

      • @Agret, That's useful info!

The E495 is to replace my 7+ year old Toshiba Z830, which is struggling and has just 4 MB RAM. Do you think it would be possible to upgrade the RAM on it? Would it even be possible to find matching RAM? And would a RAM make much of a difference or would I also need to upgrade the CPU?

        • +1

If yours has the same i5-2467M CPU in it that the linked one has then you might be limited on options, it’s a 17W low power usage CPU whereas the majority of the i5 and i7 for the sandy bridge era were 35W CPUs

Being an ultrabook it might not be wise to try using a 35W CPU (i7 2640M is $50-60USD on aliexpress) due to the thermals it would probably just throttle constantly. You should be able to upgrade the RAM, from what I can see online the model Toshiba Portege Z830 (PT22LA-00T001) apparently only has one RAM slot so you would have to replace the 4GB that’s already in it with a 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz SODIMM

Are you sure that’s the exact specs of your model (PT22LA-00T001)?

          • @Agret: Thanks for the info.

The last four digit of my model is 1001 (not T001), as in Toshiba Satellite Z830 Part No: PT22LA-001001.

            • +1

@Dinjay: I’d say get a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD (Samsung $17 cashback avail until end of August) and the 8GB of RAM for it and do a fresh install of the latest Windows 10 on it and it should be okay as a backup computer still. Should be under $200 to get both parts based on Scorptec pricing and accounting for the rebate. The CPU unfortunately being a low power one isn’t going to be amazing though it doesn’t seem like there is a better one to upgrade it to with that same 17W wattage.

              • @Agret: The Z830 has served me well for a long time and it still looks great despite the years. I will have a go at upgrading as you suggested and/or put Ubuntu on it to extend it's life as backup laptop.

As for the RAM upgrade to 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz SODIMM, is there a specific brand I should look for? Would the Crucial CT102464BF160B work?

                • +1

@Dinjay: Yeah that should work no problems, Crucial are a good brand

  • Thanks! Grabbed one :)

  • What is the GPU? Size for graphic card?

  • Dammit just missed out!

Recently read in the RACV Mag that there's a Not For Profit organization selling Refurb Laptops & Computers to Concession (low income, Student) for really good prices.

  • What would be the best method to run 2 external monitors from this laptop?

    • Looking at the tech specs it has

      1 x USB-C (USB 3 .1/DP/PD)
      1 x HDMI 1.4b

The DP next to USB-C stands for DisplayPort so you should be able to just get a USB-C to HDMI cable and an HDMI cable and connect both monitors with HDMI

      https://www.kmart.com.au/product/usb-c-to-hdmi-adaptor/20473…

    • I'm running one external monitor but I'm using a Toshiba Dynadock. The laptop connects to the Dynadock via one usb cable. This is the most convenient method but there are cheaper methods (and less convenient, ie. Connecting multiple cables to the laptop)

  • Does anyone using the E495 or E595 having any Wifi issues?

I ask because RTL8822BE Wifi card used in the above models seems to have lot of complaints regardless of the system in which it's installed (HP, Lenovo or Dell). The issue seems to have only been resolved after by replacing the wifi card with Intel cards

  • I got my money back in my account, but received a confirmation email that the order was sent out. Anyone have any idea what is going on?

    • +1

with some luck you get a laptop and a refund :D
      winner!

  • TA - any chance of bringing this deal (or better) back in the near future?

    Many thanks

  • Mine arrived yesterday and have to say I'm impressed by the zippyness for the money.. Screen looks good.. keyboard has a nice feel.. doesn't seem to cheap overall build quality..

    • Edit: As noted above.. The realtek wireless module is utter garbage and really shouldn't be sold as is. In the 2 hrs tonight I used it, it disconnected at least 10 times.. It is the worst wireless I've ever seen.. Just ordered an Intel Wireless module and another 8 gb..
