NEWS YOU’VE BEEN PATIENTLY WAITING FOR:
TOOL’S “FEAR INOCULUM” ARRIVES AUG. 30 VIA RCA RECORDS

Here’s part of the press release in case you missed it on the Times Square Digital Billboard, sky-writing and inflatable blimp advertising over most major cities, smoke signals from the College of Cardinals in Rome, select augmented reality glasses, spirit boards and cryptically encoded in agriglyphs scattered over the beautiful English countryside:

“Continuing their affinity for pushing the boundaries of physical packaging, the GRAMMY Award® winning outfit has created a deluxe, limited-edition CD version of Fear Inoculum. The collectible offering, which was conceived by and directed by Adam Jones, features a 4” HD rechargeable screen with exclusive video footage, charging cable, 2 watt speaker, a 36-page booklet and a digital download card. Pre-orders for both the special package and digital downloads are available NOW. The 85-minute collection was produced by TOOL, with Joe Barresi engineering and mixing the release. Barresi also worked with the band on 10,000 Days.” (NOTE: Even Buddhist monks wearing YOLO tee shirts know that!)

The only time I'll ever say what a time to be alive without being sarcastic

  • +2

Amazon link seems to only be the regular CD, not the deluxe edition, but happy to be wrong and it's really that price. In any case, I've pre-ordered it and will cancel if it turns out to just be the regular CD :)

    • -1

You mean you will need to return it? How do we know this is a listing the deluxe edition? There is no mention of it at all.

      • +1

It seems as though there hasn't been a regular CD announced yet (or if there is even going to be one), and the "editorial review" section of the Amazon link has the details of the deluxe edition (but that could also be a mistake entry). As for returning it - hopefully all will be clearer before it actually gets released at the end of the month.

      • +2

I can't imagine it would be $55 and be a normal cd.

    • +3

I thought this too, but some independent stores have the limited edition for ~$45 USD as well (original pre-order price on Amazon last night).

      Another example

    • +1

Description actually describes the deluxe edition.

    • +3

Yeah it looks that way, but I'm going to rely on:
      - the description in the Amazon page editorial review,
      - the fact I've seen no mention anywhere of a regular CD,
      - TOOL website (which describes only the deluxe) links directly through to this same amazon page.

I bloody hope its the deluxe because I'm ordering an extra 3 copies for mates to reduce the shipping cost.

    A new Tool album!!!~!~#$@$!~~!@@~

  • When I click the link it is showing as $37.67.

    • …US…..plus postage…

      • Title says US$44.98 plus shipping.

        • 🤔

    • +2

Yep, i cant believe they changed the price on both websites as soon as i posted the deal… i even spoke to the amazon rep to get my order canceled to re-order at the cheaper price.

      • +2

        Amazon have pre-order price guarantee

      • +1

iirc, they only charge your card for the current price when it's shipped.

  • $140 at Sanity for me.

  • +5

Take my upvote. I don't even care if it's a good deal after waiting so long.

I haven't bought a CD in years either but will make an exception in this case. Hopefully the vinyl isn't too far away too.

    • +14

I'm 99% sure that the last physical CD I purchased was 10,000 Days.

      • +2

        Same here.

      • +5

Hopefully the 3d glasses version?? I missed out at the time, but scored it later through marriage :)

        • Yep. It lives on the top of the other CDs and I still occasionally view the images.

      • Karnivool - asymmetry for me! But before that it def was 10,000 days !

        • +1

Asymmetry is a wonderful album, and doesn't get the love it deserves.

          • @eraser215: Brilliant album. Love the mix too, heaps natural and easy on the ears. Underrated indeed

    • +3

Yep bring on the vinyl please

  • OP's total doesn't take into account import tax.

    Order Summary
    Items: $37.67

  • I saw both Rammstein and Tool at the Big Day Out, which Tool headlined.

Poor Tool, having to follow a Rammstein show. Let's just say there was heaps more room down the front during the 'headliners' set :D

    • +5

Yes I remember, I went to both Sydney festivals that year. I love Tool, but they did themselves no favours by opening with Third Eye, which is almost 14 minutes long. People got bored and left. No band would want to come on after Rammstein though, no one has a better live show in my opinion.

    • +2

Don't know why the downvotes for you guys. I noticed the same. People were leaving in droves. Following Tool, plus them playing at the same time as Grinderman.

I was very happy with Tools set as it was very Lateralus heavy, but I was able to find a nice place in the grass to sit down with not many people around me, even though I was in the same place squashed against others during Rammstein.

When Tool played after Muse a few years earlier, that was a perfect band for them to follow.

      • +1

I wasn't a Tool fan and was quite happy to hang around and see what they were all about, but yeah 15 minutes into the set and people were wandering away, and my mates and I were on such a high from the Rammstein set we just wanted to talk about it and take pictures of ourselves with Till's 'white stuff' all over us so we left as well.

  • -4

Title song was a bit bland to be honest. Probably good if high maybe.

    • +18

had to sign in just to neg you

      • +3

All good. I know TOOL purists will defend them regardless. I'm a fan of their old stuff but for the first listen of the new stuff I'm not impressed. More TOOL is only awesome, if its great.

        • +5

And there then there will be those like yourself that reminisce about the "old content" insisting that the "new stuff" is bad. This is very definitively tool. Passing judgment on something new after less than a few hours of release in relation to something which has been etched into your memory, likely carrying a fair amount of sentimentality and nostalgia is a little bias. I'm not saying you're wrong or right at this point, I'm personally just happy to have a new Tool track to sink into. Give it time I'll have an opinion of my own, but right now I'm just happy it's here.

        • I thought 10 000 days was the best thing they've ever made. Rosetta Stoned probably in my top 10 songs of all time.

    • +1

Had to sign in just to pos you.

      • It is totally possible that I am just a POS that doesnt know great TOOL when I hear it, dont think so but its possible..

        • I know the truth.

So listen up because this will SHOCK and AMAZE you.

          Ready?

People have different tastes so not everyone is going to have the same opinion about artistic expression!

    • yeah, just ok, some similarity to Puscifer. You can watch some of the other new songs, Descending and maybe one other one on Youtube. Descending is better imo.

  • +1

Thanks for alerting me this album is dropping soon!

    • i had to check what month it was before it sunk in. Maynard is a master troll after all

  • +10

I just bought a $75 compact disc in 2019. Thanks Tool.

    • +2

You didn't read the description, did you.

    • +2

For what you are getting its not a bad price at all.

      • -2

        It's a CD

        • +2

… packaged in an album that contains a screen and speakers.

          • @ssquid: I do wonder if the screen content will be worth watching more than once. I still enjoy flipping through the stereoscope artwork of 10,000 days.

          • -4

@ssquid: Pretty sure if you're on Ozbargain you have screen and speakers available to you already. Everything else can be downloaded for free

I haven't used those guys in years (not since they re-branded/changed ownership from cd-wow)… can anyone comment on their reliability?

      • I recall a long time ago ordering from them and always getting damaged cd cases as they shipped in bubble bags via regular post.

That was 10 years ago however ^_^

      • I ordered vinyl that arrived warped and they didn't respond to my emails

      • No idea, but their wikipedia page is quite amusing.

"They have offices in Bothesda, Kosovo and Hong Dong and operate in 15 countries, hosting its servers in Friendship Heights and Chevy Chase."

  • +1

So are people buying this for their music or the 4" screen?

    • +13

Nah, I'm buying it for the 2-watt speaker.

  • +27

I really hope the upvotes stay at 46 and 2 downvotes.

  • IGN did a review of the tech involved in the limited edition CD, has a HD display built in or somefin….. pretty cool

  • My brain can't cope with this. My happiness is ultimate. I feel like a kid again, with this excitement. I'm hyping this the (profanity) up everybody. Join me, be happy, rejoice!

  • +4

For anyone curious about the reason for the price, Amazon US are price matching Walmart

    https://www.walmart.com/ip/Fear-Inoculum-CD-Limited-Edition/…

  • 75.84 total!

I'm going to hold out for one the Vinyl releases.

    • -2

Why would you want a significantly worse copy though? Vinyl is not capable of providing anything close to CD fidelity.

      • +1

        Vinyl is life man.

      • analogue vs digital, vinyl is best

      • +1

Not necessarily true, Vinyl's dynamic range is superior to CD I believe. CDs last much longer though.

  • +6

Shut up and buy, buy, buy my new record
And buy, buy, buy, send more money

  • +1

Listening to this now on spotify, classic.

  • -1

Wow, I thought CD sales were a thing of the past.
Admit, I am tempted but would probably just listen to a digital version.

    Maybe I am missing something?

    Love TOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Maybe I am missing something?

      Yeah.

Limited Edition physical package that includes a CD in a tri-fold Soft Pack Video Brochure featuring a 4" HD rechargeable screen with exclusive video footage, a USB charging cable, a 2 watt speaker and a 36 page insert book and MP3 download card.

      Not "just" a CD.

  • +2

Sanity started at $180 (marked down from $200) last night. They got a lot of grief on their Facebook page and updated pricing citing the importer as to the cause of the high price.

I ordered mine on Amazon last night and was very happy to see a price reduction there too. $75 shipped and to my door, thank you very much.

  • I can't wait for them to go bust.

    • Amazon or Tool?

      • +1

        Sanity.

  • +3

Absolutely love the new song. It just sounds like a natural progression to me in skill and style. I also find having something complex, but also positive, to listen to in the otherwise fast paced and negative world we live in really important.

  • This might be a silly question but as far as the pre-order process goes will they only send it after it reaches August 30?

    • +1

Yes. Probably receive second week of September.

  • New song is rubbish. Listened to it once on the way to work and to me, it sounds like a mash up DJ got hold of all the off cuts of previous albums and mashed them together, thrown in with some Maynard hymn gibberish.

Eulogy, Disposition, Reflection, Lateralus - i hear crap versions of these songs.

    • +6

Kinda sounds like several, or all, members of the band got together and made some music similar to stuff they made before.

Of course it sounds similar! It's the same band!

      • -1

Well duh, but I'm talking literally minor variations on a beat, sound, etc. At least 10,000 days offered something a bit different to earlier works for the most part.

Maybe the album in entirety will change my mind… but yeah. So far… thumbs down

        • +1

I think you need to give it a few more listens.

I liked it when I first heard it but I have listened to it maybe 5 times through yesterday and today and I can say now that I love this song and if this is any indication of the new album it is going to be awesome.

    • +1

its just 1 track dude, its new. needs time to seep in.
you'll come around bro, i felt the same with with 10k days, and lateralus blew my (profanity) mind previously. its the same band so you probably wont get that mind explosion again. i think 10k days may be my fav album now.
maybe check out some different music.
here are some stuff i have in front of me that arrived this week for inspiration:
      maryanne amacher - petra
deathspell omega - the furnaces of palingenesia
      lingua ignota caligula
      oren ambarchi - simian angel
      david rosenboom - deviant resonances
laurie spiegel - the expanding universe
and i pre ordered the new kayo dot deluxe package :) :) cant wait!

    • +1

LOL at judging a Tool song after listening to it "once".

      • -1

Agree. 18 years on and I still find new things across lateralus which I’ve never noticed

  • +1

Yeah my initial reaction was, 'this sounds like an outtake from Lateralus'. It's ok. I don't think the "chorus" is all that strong, or engaging.

  • can anyone confirm if this is for the 'deluxe' version? or are all pre-sale cd's deluxe by default?

  • +1

It’s the deluxe version, has to be, otherwise I can’t go on…

    Ordered last night at 10pm

  • +1

This is so hard to justify when I know it’s just going to get placed in a box with my other cd’s gathering dust. :(

  • Will this be added to the AU Amazon store for prime members to take advantage of free shipping I wonder?

  • +4

Wow.. so many Tool fans. That makes me happy.

    • +1

Yeah it’s great to see 80+ upvotes on a $75 CD.

      • +1

        C'mon bro, it's a $65 CD with a $9 display/speaker…

  • +1

I’m sorely tempted to buy this, but in 2019 the only thing I have in my house that will play CDs is an old (unused for years) DVD player :(

    • +1

I actually have nothing that will play a CD I just realized…
