Received an invitation for Commbank World Debit Mastercard - replacing my existing debit Mastercard. Seems to be a new product offering possibly in the future.
Functions the same as any other debit card would, but has quite a number of good benefits included.

List of benefits:
- 2 free complimentary airport lounge passes per year
- no CBA fees for overseas ATM withdrawals
- no international transaction fees (online+instore)
- Complimentary international travel insurance up to 21 days per trip
- Price guarantee (claim price diff.), purchase security (within 90 days, repair and replacement of lost stolen or damaged purchases) and extended warranty on purchases (up to 1 extra year)

good deal for 6 months…. then cancel ;)

What’s the point signing upon the first place? This is not like some credit card deal with bonus points.

        • savage.

        • +1

just in time for a year end trip
lounge access and no international fees

        • +1

          To get the perks.

    Just a side note:
"- no CBA fees for overseas ATM withdrawals"

You can still get ATM fees from the overseas banks - so becareful.

Both your local bank (NAB, CBA ETC) can charge you a fee along with the local bank ALSO charging you a fee at your destination.

Some banks like ING now don't charge you any fee from their end AND rebate you whatever the local bank charges for using their service.

I'm not comparing CBA and ING (as they are totally two different products with different benefits), I'm just trying to give an example so people understand what I mean.

    • +3

Agree ING was a fantastic card in Japan, no fees and always highest possible exchange

    • +3

I was in asia the other month and I think it was Thailand where the local banks hit you with a $12 atm fee! Thankfully ING repaid it. Otherwise it would have been much cheaper to just change $aud.

      • Damn I thought my $6.50 fee was high. Bless ING I use it every time I travel.

      • In Cambodia a couple of years ago my partner was charged $20 from the local bank for withdrawal. Lucky I had ing

    • Yup another +1 for ING. Have always gotten foreign bank atm fees refunded

    • +2

Some banks like ING now don't charge you any fee from their end AND rebate you whatever the local bank charges for using their service.

It's not really "some banks". The ING Orange Everyday transaction account is currently the ONLY product in Australia which rebates ATM operator fees overseas (provided you meet the monthly qualification criteria in the month before your trip)

Saved me an absolute motsa in Thailand where each and every ATM withdrawal from any ATM (of any bank) with a foreign bank card costs 220 Baht ($10.50 AUD) without exception.

      • Isn’t Macquarie the same?

        • Nope. They don't rebate ATM operator fees incurred overseas (only domestically)

  • +2

Been with CBA for 11 or so years and i never get these types of offers :(

    • +1

      Probably a blessing in disguise

      • +3

Koipanda you Should say thank you for reminding me that I have to ditch CommBank

    • I got this offer, but I wouldn't consider as a deal. More like a product promotion which not suitable for me.

    • Check your marketing preferences - they aren’t allowed to send you these stuff if you are opted out

      • How do i check that?

  • International travel insurance up to 21 days per trip. Better not take a very long holiday.

    • +1

Long holidays aren’t good anyways. I find short and sweet trips get you energised whereas long trips are exhausting and can get boring.

      • +2

Whereas I prefer a long holiday. Both times I have been to Europe it has been for 5 weeks. If I am going to spend 25 hours getting each way, I'm not going to do it for a 1-2 week holiday.

Also we were changing countries every 4 days, so we never got bored.

  • probably the offer is for premium package

  • Is ING better than Citibank for overseas now?

    • +2

      110%
They charge no fees for overseas withdrawals AND rebate you any fee charged from the local bank.

Citibank, I haven't used for years but they only had fee free atm with certain local banks, the only way to know was to research and find past forum topics on the internet of people saying y bank is fee free. It can be a huge hassle a lot of the time.

ING is just fee free, they don't care how much the fee is, it's instantly given back.

      • There are eligibility criteria however. From their website:

100% of ING International ATM withdrawal fees and 100% of ATM fees when eligibility criteria is met.
Offer will apply for the next calendar month when you perform the following during the current calendar month:
deposit at least $1,000 from an external bank account to any personal ING account in your name (excluding Living Super and Orange One), and
also make at least 5 card purchases that are settled (and not at a 'pending status') using your ING debit or credit card (excluding ATM withdrawals, balance enquiries, cash advances and EFTPOS cash out only transactions).

        https://www.ing.com.au/rates-and-fees/credit-cards-fees.html

If you use ING as your main bank account, that's fine but I don't.
I actually prefer Citibank. The ATMs that are fee free with Citibank are usually the main ones for that country + any Citibank ATMs and I haven't found it much of a hassle

        • Hi! My hubby and I currently live in Chiang Mai, and in the whole city there is only one ATM that is fee free - The Bank of China. Fortunately we live quite close to it, but unfortunately (and I kid you not) approx 75% of the time when we go to use the ATM it has run out of cash to dispense and the ATM can only be used for deposits. So frustrating. So we are very interested in the ING account, if we can use any ATM in Chiang Mai and have the fees refunded. Do you know for sure if the rate will be the same? Its just the Mastercard rate, which is pretty close to the mid-market official rate, is that right? Thanks for your help!

Edit: All of the above info is based on using the Citibank card.

        Hi,

Is this the Orange everyday account? And do you deposit $1000+ per month and make 5 purchases per month to get the fee free?

Just want to make sure its the same one, as looking to ditch Citibank and go for the ING card.

        Thanks heaps in advance!

          https://www.ing.com.au/rates-and-fees/orange-everyday-fees.h…

ING used to be good for me until they brought in their eligibility criteria

          • @Riker88: I tend to agree with you. The requirement to transact 5 times using the debit card is PITA.

Saying that, if you're going to a country with high ATM operator fees for foreigners (and limited ability to pay with plastic), the effort to qualify may be worth it.

My recent trip to Thailand (where all ATM withdrawals are now $10.50 a pop for foreigners), has proved this point definitively for me.

            • @ginmi: 5 purchases a month is easy, just buy random junk on eBay or Groupon to take advantage of the shopback/cashback promos.

              • @ATangk: buy groceries by card, even easier.

                • +2

@[Deactivated]: Split payment one single purchase, even even easier.

I think some people like to use their CC for transactions for the qantas points or whatever so it’s a hassle to use ING instead. Possibly. Maybe.

    • If you hit their requirement it has always been better for overseas.

  • +1

Apart from the lounge access I've pretty much got everything else for free across different cards.

    • +17

I just use my lounge at home, so don't really need this.

      • If needed.. would probably get the card that offers it for free before traveling and then cancel afterwards.

      • Extra bonus: saves a lot of money on the travel. Keep up the good work jv.

    • Care to share which cards?

      • +2
        • ING DC for International Transactions and ATMs
        • Coles Platinum CC for Purchase Protection, Transit Accident Insurance, Extended Warranty and Flybuys
        • NAB CC also has Purchase Protection

All free. NAB originally had annual fee. When I called them to cancel citing annual fee as reason for cancellation they waived the fee for life. That was 3 years ago.

Not sure if Transit Accident = Complimentary Travel Insurance but that's as useless as free lounge access for me. Last I traveled was in early 2017 so doesn't effect me as I don't travel much.

    $10 Monthly Fee Thereafter

    Why pay?

They make enough money from the merchant fees and the amount they keep off each transaction.

    • +2

Exactly, pay to use your own money? No thanks!

  • Commbank seem to be really trying to refresh their image lately with the new commsec pockets app, the updated and refreshed commbank app and now this new card. Pretty interesting so far although I think this card isn't that amazing because of the $10 fee per month.

  • +1

Take away the $10 fee and make it a credit card, then I’m sold

  • How do you check if you received this offer or not? Will it show under 'offers' when you login to your NetBank?

    • You’ll get en email. I got one about a month ago!

      • Bummer… You can't even sign up to this..

  • Does anyone know where i can find a list of the airport lounges ?

    • +1

Sorry, can't help but based on the evidence from the "Banking" RC it's probable that many don't exist, some were closed years ago, and they'll reject your entry based on outdated dress rules.

    • +1

Make your airport experience one of indulgence with Mastercard Airport Experiences provided by LoungeKey. As the cardholder, you’ll receive two complimentary airport lounge visits, which can be shared with an accompanying guest, per year. You’ll also get membership to over 1000 lounges worldwide and dining, spa & retail offers from selected airport merchants.

To access participating lounges simply present your World Debit Mastercard or your digital lounge access code, together with your boarding pass and identify yourself as a LoungeKey member.

To redeem offers, select your preferred offer and generate an offer code. Present the valid offer code to the cashier and redeem the offer.

      • You can search for lounges at https://airport.mastercard.com, they are the same as PriorityPass lounges.

Pretty poor domestic offerings, only the Rex Lounge in Adelaide and in Brisbane there's no lounge at all, just a voucher to use in the cafe.

The international ones are much better - both dnata and SATS in Singapore which are both good.

  • 28 Degrees Card !! It’s a credit card though, but there no monthly fee and no international transaction fee too.

  • +7

This is a card for dead people, for commbank to keep charging the fee for all eternity.
Any living soul would run a mile from paying conbank $10/mth for a debit card.

  • paying the bank to keep your money? (profanity) right off, not just a little bit of the way.

  • So it's basically 2 free lounge passes. (Great for me as I travel). I wonder if the CBA Wealth package voids this fee or you can just negotiate to have it removed citing ING.

    • I was wondering the same - I was thinking about giving the liasion a call to find out.

  • +2

Never thought I see the day a fee for a debit card

  • just in time for my holidays, then cancel :)

  • If you use the lounge visits then I think the cards $10 fee is less of an issue. That said it's in a bit of an odd middle ground being a debit card also looking to serve as a travel card. I think many would prefer a card that lost the travel perks and just had no international transaction fee and was free. For travellers there's a wide range of cards, with the backup of a credit line, and more thorough travel related perks.

Seems like the fee could turn off non travellers, while travellers have better options out there.

  • Anyone know what the invite criteria/conditions are for this? Wouldn't mind getting the lounge passes

I'm guessing I didn't get it because I'm on their wealth package which nullifies account monthly/annual fees?

  • Just remind you guys, if you have accepted the offer, you can find the card in cba app - cards. Should receive it soon.

Card will look something like this

  • +1

Just got mine today, nice looking card. https://imgur.com/a/9qrPlzf

  • Got my card today, since it’s fee free for 6 months im gonna destroy it after, they are ruining the purpose of a debit card.

  • Got this last week, even though I cancelled in January…

We hope you’re enjoying your new World Debit MastercardTM.

We’re pleased to let you know that we’ll be extending your monthly card fee waiver until 31/12/2020, so you won’t pay the $10 monthly card fee until 01/01/2021.

This means you can enjoy your exclusive card benefits with no monthly card fee, for longer.

    Yours sincerely,
    The CommBank Team

I'm going to try and get it reinstated. The free travel insurance with no minimum spend plus 2x lounge access is a positive.

    • +1

same, but they should just make it free for life :D
