[QLD] Open a (Free) RACQ Bank Account and Get Free RACQ Membership

1480

This is certainly not a new deal… been around for ages, I just have not seen anyone post about it.

I just went to cancel my RACQ roadside assistance as I bought a battery jump-starter from a previous bargain. They informed me that because I still had my RACQ bank account, I would retain my membership (just without the roadside assistance)…. I have about 26c in my account and I never use it!

Please note that this free membership DOES NOT include roadside assist, but includes access to their dining and entertainment discounts (I use these quite a lot).

Thought I would share and spread the word.

Do they have any discounts that are worth signing up for?

    • +2

QLD based, so if you are in QLD, particularly rural towns, you can get 10-15% off some dining places. Movie tickets are discounted, as well as themeparks. 10% off the EKKA currently as well

      • +1

They have an app with all the info :)

Oh, 2-4-1 footy tickets…. accomodation also. I go to the GABBA a bit and usually use RACQ

        • Is there anything similar with RACV?
Dad only has car insurance with RACV Gold20% but we need to cancel and they said need to sign up as "Member" which is $36p.a if we want to keep Gold status loyalty. Pricks.

        • Ate the footy tickets just for the GABBA or Aus wide?

    • +5

They have some good eGift card offers nationwide, check out the wiki for the rates. This is usually a min of $26 a year to access, so this is a good deal just for opening a bank account.

      • Oh wow, 25% off repco, 7% off target….. amount others….that’s great!

        • +1

Lol I think those rates are a bit outdated, Repco is only 25% off in-store on full priced items I think and 5% off target Gift Cards now. But there's still some good rates in there for free.

          • +1

@doweyy: Please update the wiki when possible:)

      • You talking about lifestyle membership?

    • +5

There’s also 4c off per litre of fuel at Puma and other petrol stations.

      • +1

"RACQ and Free2Go members save 4 cents per litre* on fuel at participating Puma Energy and Choice petrol stations Australia wide."

They used to offer Pacific Petroleum as well, seems to not be offered any more.

        • Pacific Petroleum discount is still going.

          • @ExPrinceHairy: I saw that too, but it's not listed on their discounts webpage. Maybe they removed the link to that page, but forgot to remove the page itself. Or do you mean you have successfully obtained the discount from Pacific Petroleum, recently?

            • @Russ: Good point, although I have driven past a couple of Pacific Petroleum stations in the last week and they still have the RACQ discount sign up.

              • @ExPrinceHairy: Worth a try. Maybe their previous arrangement is expiring soon, and that's why they aren't listing it on the discounts webpage - in case they can't renegotiate it.

    • RACQ discounts are listed on their website:
      https://www.racq.com.au/membership/what-you-get/discounts

      Gift cards are under "Online".

      • +1

Wasted my time signing up to get Coles 5 % now 4 % and all other nothing special : (

        • Some of the places that offer the 4% discount actually have no fee charge like Suncorp Rewards or Cashrewards for Woolworths Gift Cards and actually ends up cheaper than those at 5% discount with fee.

    • You can get a decent discount on their racq travel insurance being a member too. Better price with similar inclusions to other providers

    • +1
  • what happens if you get 2 flat tyres… at the same time?

    • +3

Call and upgrade membership for around ~$180 if I remember correctly. If you don’t use RACQ every year, cheaper this way. That’s how I got my last membership lol.

      • +3

You are correct. You pay the fee of 1 year of roadside assistance, plus a fee ($98?) to nullify the waiting period. This gets you get the roadside benefits for the next twelve months, as well as the on-the-spot assistance. The cost of 1 year of roadside assistance varies, depending on which plan you select. Plans with longer towing distances cost more, so if you're stranded a long way from any RACQ agencies, you'll have to pay a bit more.

I wrote myself a note on how to do this, and put it in the glovebox of my car, along with the relevant details (RACQ phone number, make and year of car, etcetera). Everyone who uses my car knows about the form, and can ring if needed.

There are probably cheaper ways to get assistance in one-off situations, if you know the phone number of nearby mobile mechanics, and they are willing to come out at whatever time you need them.

Everyone should also have a form in their glovebox, along with a pencil or two, saying what information you need to obtain if you are involved in an accident. Maybe a pencil sharpener too, just to be safe. Yes, you can use your phone to take pictures, but sometimes phones go flat or get broken in an accident, and pencils are a cheap backup.

I service my car at kmart tyre and auto. I get free roadside assistance for 6 months with each service.

      • Got a link about that?
I heard KTAS is absolute sht.

        • +2

          https://www.ktas.com.au/

Every place is going to be different but I've never had a problem with them and they never try to upsell or do anything unnecessary which I think is the most important for car servicing.

          • @samfisher5986: Can you tell where it says the free roadside for servicing?

            • +1

@capslock janitor: On their frontpage, with another link for more detail

              "Free roadside
              assistance*

              with selected car services"

Simply purchase either an Essential Plus or Logbook service and you'll automatically receive 6 months Roadside Assistance.

Going back 10 years I got my car serviced at KATS. They said I needed 4 things done totaling about $600. I had warranty on the used car I bought, so had to get warranty done somewhere else. They said 3 of those things were not needed, and only 1 was. 2 of the other 3 were never mentioned in the 7 years I had the car after that, and the other wasn't mentioned until 5 years after KATS said otherwise.

      • will this still be valid as all KTAS are changing to MyCar ?

    • +1

      gotu app

      • Thanks, I hadn’t heard of gotU before. Looks like they’ll do the job if you’re urban.

    • You just wait until the cops pack up their road-spikes, and they give you a free ride anyway..

  • Anyone know if the movie tickets etc are only for use in QLD cinemas?

    • +1

They say QLD only, but I've used them in NSW/Sydney before when travelling.

  • +9

Is there a way to register for any of their service without a QLD residential address?

I checked almost all the banking products and it seems like all eligibility requires a QLD residential address.

    Maybe mark it as [QLD]?

    • I wouldnt care if you used mine, i already get some guys fine notices every fortnight that after 4 calls explaining he doesnt live here i just throw out now… Lol

  • +5

I want to sign up for the discounted Coles, Target and Kmart gift cards.
Do I need to be in QLD to sign up?

    • What you'll need
      Either an Australian drivers licence
      or
      Australian passport for identification
      Queensland residential address
      Tax File Number (optional)
      or
foreign Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) (if applicable)

      • +1

        I read that as
        What you'll need

        1. Either an Australian drivers licence or Australian passport for identification

        2. Queensland residential address

        3. Tax File Number (optional) or foreign Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) (if applicable)

        Form page here:
        https://forms.racq.com.au/banking/servlet/SmartForm.html?for…

They will post out your membership card, so don't put in a fake address. You'll also get bank statements by snail mail.

  • +8

If you get RACQ membership this way, they will also send you "The Road Ahead" magazine, every second month (6 issues per year). This costs them money, both printing and postage. If you are signing up just for the bank and benefits, please set your preferences to "digital delivery" for the magazine. RACQ will email you a link to the online magazine instead.

Wouldn't want to kill the goose that lays golden eggs.

Also note: application is on-line, and it took 5-6 weeks for the RACQ membership card to arrive in the mail when I applied (about a year ago). During the waiting period, I recall that I was able to log in and print off a barcode to use for the fuel discount, and I was able to buy discounted gift cards.

    • Oh true! Forgot about the fuel discount also :)

  • Am I missing something? I can’t see a link to free membership?
The website says “Become an RACQ member when you purchase one of these products*”

    • Click through "Switch to RACQ bank". For the bank account type, select the "Everyday Account".

      • My bad, I didn't realise you have to open a new bank account. No thanks, I'll pass.

        • +1

wasn't in the title? [QLD] Open a (Free) RACQ Bank Account and Get Free RACQ Membership

guess OzBargainers be reading free and just blindly getting anything :P

  • Thanks OP

  • +1

Coles giftcards 4% off, same as Suncorp.
WOW Wish giftcards 5% off, same as Cashrewards.

It seems a little dirty to be repeatedly opening up bank accounts just for unrelated trinkets.

    • +5

Not at all, they should have done their homework and they use these trinkets as marketing tool to get you hooked up, it is a crowded/ highly competitive market out there, they do everything they can to have your business, even the prospect of your future business.

      • Agreed. If 1% of their banking customers later decide to have a home loan with them, it probably pays for the other 99%.

There is always expense involved in getting new customers, advertising is one way. This way is more word-of-mouth, and generates loyalty.

  • +3

    Requires a "Queensland residential address"
    https://forms.racq.com.au/banking/servlet/SmartForm.html?for…

    Will try a WA address.
    RESULT: Doesn't allow it.
"Let's chat about your application. We need more information about your personal details. You have indicated that you don't have a Queensland residential address.

Please call RACQ on 13 1905 quoting reference L4W927M to talk to an agent now."

    • +3

      Just use c/-

2649 Logan Road, Eight Mile Plains, QLD, 4113

It's their head office address :)

      • +2

Then you won't receive the membership card, as RACQ will be mailing it to themselves. And then get a little bit suspicious.

Not a good idea to use a random address either, as they mail out bank statements. Identity theft risk.

  • +3

4% off Jetstar up $1000 is a good one as well.

    • +1

Can't find 4% off Jetstar on website, on discount app or their call center.

      • Sorry about that, it must have only recently stopped as I used it about 3 months ago.

    • +1

Jetstar is no longer available, by the looks of it. It used to be there, was listed in this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/373354

Google search finds it also, but clicking through doesn't work: https://www.google.com/search?q=racq+jetstar&ie=utf-8&oe=utf…

      • I bought that JetStar gift card for a Japan trip last year. Worked then. But now who's got JetStar? Suncorp has Flight Centre and Webjet.

  • +1

Note to everyone: becoming an RACQ member this way doesn't automatically register you for the benefits other than the 4c/l petrol discount, or at least it didn't a year ago when I signed up.

Once you get your RACQ membership, if you can't access the rewards, register here: https://rewards.racq.com.au//#/register

  • Roadside covers you for towing as well not just jump-starting. I have used the towing alot more then what I pay for my membership so it's definitely worth getting

  • Just opened the account, does anyone know when would the membership card be arriving? or the digital version of it? Thanks

    • +1

Well, I had the same question. I called them and they basically told me that it might take up to 4 weeks (!!!) for a membership card to be sent out via mail.

    • If your "Bank ID" has been emailed to you, use that number to login to your account. You'll have to do some verification that it is you logging in.

Once you are logged in, there is an option to print a barcode, which lets you get the fuel discounts.

If you are after the other rewards, you have to register for those, see my comment above.

      • +1

        I got that wrong.

First, go to https://www.racq.com.au/ and click "Login", then click "Log in to my RACQ profile".

To login, you use the email address you gave them when signing up (they have sent you emails using this email address), plus a passcode they have sent to you by SMS. You will be asked to create a new password. From my notes, it looks like I was asked to create a new password two times.

Once you are logged in, you will be on the "Account Overview" page. On the left, it will say you are a "Blue Member". Just below that, it says "View member barcode". This shows you the exact barcode that will be printed on your membership card, and you can print this barcode on paper and use it to get fuel discounts.

For the e-gift cards, first you have to register at https://rewards.racq.com.au//#/register

After you have registered, you can log in at https://rewards.racq.com.au using the same email and the new password you chose above. You'll have to enter a payment method into your e-wallet (symbol that looks like a credit card with an "e" on it), and then RACQ will charge a few cents to your credit card. You then have to log into your online banking, find out how many cents you were charged, and verify that number of cents back to the RACQ website (this is to verify the card you entered is actually yours). That small charge will be refunded back to you within a couple of days.

Once your card is verified, you can proceed to purchase e-gift cards. I don't know if you can use Amex cards, I didn't see anything in the terms and conditions. Mastercard and Visa are definitely okay.

To log out of the rewards site, click on the e-wallet symbol at the top right, and you will see the logout option.

Edit: I can't remember when they sent me the SMS passcode, and from my emails, I had queried them about how to use the discounts. They sent me back an email explaining it, perhaps they sent me the SMS passcode earlier than usual because I had queried them.

        • +2

I didn't see your comment after logging in the Banking site firstly with the password texted and it prompted me to change the password which I did. Now I can't log into My RACQ profile site with the banking login password. Nothing came in the mail either. Should I give them a call & ask for My racq profile login details?

          • @MiaSanMia: You could try the "Forgot your password?" option first. If that doesn't help, give them a call.

        • +1

Same issue - I can log into the banking site but not the RACQ profile site (with the banking password). Do not see any info about a RACQ membership in the banking site. Tried 'Forgot Password', have not received an email yet (I don't think I have an RACQ account associated with this email, other than the banking one, which seems to be separate). Cannot register for an account without RACQ number. Will pursue further next week.

          • +1

@mathematicalcoffee: Have contacted support about this. The response is

Thank you for your reply email.
We are unable to find a membership with your details.
When you open a bank account it can take approx. 6 weeks for your membership details to process. Once this processes we will post you a membership card.

so I guess there's no interim number we can use.

  • Login from the RACQ normal website? Not the banking website right? In order to access the fuel discount and other rewards?

  • Would signing up for a bank account give you access to those sales at Repco where they have 30% off from time to time?
