Lamy LX Fountain Pen US $39.25 (~AU $57.80), Visconti Homo Sapiens Dark Age Oversize US $564.25 (~AU $831) Shipped @ Drop

Today's crop of deals from Drop (formerly Massdrop) had a couple of good deals on pens.

The Lamy LX is the same shape and size as both Safari and Al-Star, except they're anodised aluminium plated in your choice of gold, palladium, rose gold, or ruthenium colours. A range of nibs sizes in black stainless steel are available on checkout. These pens normally retail for $100 in Australia, and even Amazon are nominally close to $80 shipped.

The Visconti Homo Sapiens range is definitely aimed at serious collectors or those who want a real luxury pen experience. The barrel is made from basaltic lava from Mt Etna in Italy. "Known for its strength, this lava is virtually unbreakable, smooth to the touch, and slightly hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb the moisture from your hand." It comes with a two-tone 23-karat palladium nib (I've tested one in-store and these are buttery smooth!) in fine, medium, or broad at the base price, or +US$50 for extra-fine. This one is normally close to $1k in most pen shops, online sellers are not much cheaper. Click here for a link to the drop.

  • Good price, but annoying that you have to join / sign in to see prices

  • I’d very much like one of those Visconti Homo Sapiens.

What holds me back most (apart from the crazy amount of money for a pen) are the severe quality control issues people have reported with the nibs, then pen as a whole and the extremely poor customer service from Visconti.

I have a Pilot Custom 823 coming I very much look forward to. Not a looker at all but apparently one of the most heavenly writers. And it’s a vacuum filler as well - which I quite like.

    • +1

Wait for a used one to come up for sale, then you get a reasonable price AND assurance that the pen works as well.
