KANO Computer Kits $99.99 Delivered @ Australian Geographic

250

I saw this while browsing the latest Australian Geographic deals (thanks to ozbargainers). There's two Kano computer kits, Harry Potter wand kit and Pixel kit at really good prices, especially the Kit with screen. It's selling over 300+ everywhere else. Maybe can price beat somewhere. It's good for people new to Rasberry Pi, or Christmas stockings! Please check reviews first people.

IMPORTANT NOTE : The complete kit (with screen) is NOT A TOUCHSCREEN. It's an earlier version. All computer sets has Raspberry Pi 3. Also newer version Pi 4 has been released recently overseas and also new ones with Windows 10s coming up in October.

edited Harry Potter spello. Sorry HP fans.
added. Motion sensor kit also dropped price, was full price two hours befoer this post.

UPDATE. The Complete set with screen sold out.

  • Has anyone used one of these? I would love to introduce this to my 6 year old, although I suspect she might not be interested.

How kid friendly is the software/programing?

      just get them a tablet..
      or a real computer

      Tablet is more kid friendly

BTW kids this young should get more outdoor activities
since they will learn more stuff..
and less likely to damage their eyes from looking at screen all day.

        I can tell you're not a parent.

        • Or really thinking. Not sure how a kid playing outside would make them learn more then messing around with a PC (ish).

How’s the view up there on your high horse?

      • zero screens were harmed or looked at in the creation of this post's comments. wtaf

This Kano kit is built for kids. I read some reviews seems quite suitable for your child's age group. Well big kids (like me) can have some fun too as an absolute starter to Rasp.

it's sort of kid-friendly at the 8-12 range, as it eventually prompts you to build logic loops, using colour blocks and leads into playing simple games.

You should also grab the updated Kanux image from the kano website, if you're tech-minded, as the updated linux files will help speed things along with updated core software and more games. It is also helpful if you lose the SD card …

It's on par with Lego Mindstorm or Lego robot programs,

the basic kit here is worth more than $100 for an rPi and a screen alone, the 2016 version without the screen is okay value, as the rPi 3b and the various "hats" that add features are worth $10 to $20 each for the rPi. And, a standard rPi kit, is around $100, due to the keyboard, power adaptor, hdmi cable and SD card (which can be bargained down a lot), but it's close to the price you'd pay for a standard rPi kit alone.

Compared to a secondhand 2016 era tablet, the Rpi 3b is about on par, performance wise with a 2016 samsung tablet.

For an older pre-teen, the tablet is more useful, for under-10's, it depends how familiar they are with Lego and other Kit type projects.

    Bought 2 for some projects

Me too, thought I can hack it later for other purposes.

      • Worst case scenario give it to the kids to learn

Lots of 1* reviews on Amazon saying it's not working. Not sure if I should purchase one - there are lots of 5* reviews. Warranty with a construction set might be problematic.

    • I'm reading this also, maybe can paypal and return it? I wonder how's Aust Geo's return policy is like. Or try the other Kit without screen, connectable to TV, seems less negs.

The pi and screen alone would be worth this almost.

  • Good deal!
