I have been with Kogan Mobile since the relaunch, but locking for 2 years is just ridiculous. And the discount isn't that much compared to the usual 12 months.

    • +6

      Agreed. Not worth it.

      • +2

Yep, for example the usual 40GB/month is $25.90 for 12 months. Locked in for 24 months you got a whooping $24.90, or $1/m cheaper. Not worth it for being locked for 24 months. Now if they gives 30% discount compared to the usual discount-all-year-round 12 months, it may be worth something.

        • +1

hey we have similar in mind i just mentioned that magic number 30%

    • -6

      Explain why?

If they have the best plan why change.

I am happy with my 12 month plans why not just double, triple, quadruple, pentuple it?

I still want my 10 year prepaid plan.. set and forget so I can focus on other things and not have to do the yearly look up it is a waste of time for all of us and a pain doing the whole process every year.

You don't change your bed every year or wait do you.

      • +3

Really? 15 minutes out of your life each year is too much?

        • -2

It is not 15 minutes when you gotta crawl the whole web for the best plan then order a new sim and wait for that to arrive.

Also if you are somebody who helps others mostly old people set their mobile plans up this would be a game changer for me.

Don't wanna have to tech support like 3 other people including myself every year when I can just set and forget for "life".

It definitely doesn't take 15 minutes when you go through a million different carriers and websites and forum threads to find the one plan to beat them all.

          • @AlienC: wait.. wasn't that the reason you jump in here that skip your million browsing thingy ? since you spend 5 minutes of time to reply… this year you need 20 minutes… LoL

      • Because I do want to keep an eye out for better deal. I did port to Catch for 3 months during my long stay with Kogan to take advantage of cash back and to see if Optus was better. Turns out Optus was worse for me.

Besides, if you put your money in term deposit it comes out approx the same as the discount, so no benefit actually. I would rather having choice then being locked to Kogan in that case.

        • +1

Catch network is rubbish they may have a different band then optus. However, kogan was perfect while I was trying the network in the three months I had it for.

          • +1

@Clubbermga: I just switched from Kogan to Catch this month and I agree. Catch on Optus network keeps dropping out when I stream radio while driving. Hardly ever happened on Kogan. Sydney metro here.

      • Haha you sound very time poor šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

        • -2

No just like saving time and being more efficient.

Time is money friend or in this case Time is literally Life.

Imagine only having to pay once for mobile/home internet/etc other subscription services.. and not having to financially worry about it until x amount of years.. man that would make me a stress free man overnight especially with my unpredictable bank balance and income.

Just give a kid a 50 year plan and they can sell it / refund it pro rata if they don't like it.

Simple solution and answer to me.. I don't like checking my phone every few mins for notifications but I do because that is the world we live in but imagine if it wasn't like that for certain bills would definitely free up some thinking space for other commitments and reminders and what not.

Might be just me but less is more when it comes to these things like constant reminders/bills/periodic things.

Just my two cents you can like it or leave it.

  • +1

our 12 months will ends in december but most likely will NOT continue with kogan anymore. (this is after 2 consecutive years).
signal is bad in our area, internet speed slower compare with friend sit next to me with optus, delay receiving sms up to 1 day.
well unless i can get like 30% off from those prices listed above.

    • Try catch mobile
      They use optus network

      • +1

Catch is total rubbish when I tried it.

        • +1

How is optus for you? Really depends on your area

        • Tried it for the last 3 months and it has been total rubbish. It felt like Optus gave them an inferior package. Either that or Optus network has gotten from decent to bad over the last several years.

  • +4

Kogan/Vodafone have been great and I credit them with promoting competition in the 12 month prepaid sector… with that said itā€™s too hard to pass up boost these days.

    • +1

agree. without further discount from kogan:

kogan large 20gb per month = $399 per 12 years, but boost (240gb for 12 months ie same 20gb per month) only $300 with more perks and extras! is this real? and i heard people can still receive sms while overseas without buying any add on?

      • Yeah, having access to full Telstra makes u realise how slow and patchy the other networks can be.

In my experience, Optus was worse than Kogan/voda. Data on Optus was always a crawl… and supported by speed tests. Kogan/voda maybe a slightly lesser footprint, but when there was a footprint the data was always fast. Telstra/boost the best of both worlds and every faster and larger footprint.

        • weeks ago i sat next to my optus friend at carlingford and the speedtest was like heaven and earth (OPTUS wayyy faster).
ok so will cross out optus then

      • +1

kogan large 20gb per month = $399 per 12 years.

12 years???? Where do I sign?

  • Been with kogan for about 3 years but after I finish likely go with aldimobile for me the reception has always worked but slow at time especially in the city even with the extra cost the roll over with aldi makes it appealing

  • +2

I changed form Kogan to Optus and the difference in data speeds is very noticeable. If I could turn back the clock, I would continue with Kogan. Optus inner Melb CBD (direct line of sight to CBD) in an old brick house and Vodafone network wins hands down on for speed.

However, 24 mths just sniffs of desperation by Kogan (as I am sure many have left Kogan to go Optus/Amaysim/Telstra/Belong/Boost due to the many deals offered in past few months. This is a trend that I anticipate to continue since the infrastructure has past break-even point and every provider wants to shore up their customer base to leverage more investor confidence to build/offer the 5G network.

    • +1

"I changed form Kogan to Optus and the difference in data speeds is very noticeable. If I could turn back the clock, I would continue with Kogan."
hmm??? please review an inconsistency there

      • +1

My comment isnā€™t inconsistent. Kogan 4G (Vodafone) walks over Optus 4G in my situation.

        • -2

so you meant ""I changed form Kogan to Optus and the difference in data speeds is very UNnoticeable. "

          • @CyberMurning: Kidding? ā€œUn-noticeableā€ means itā€™s same/similar. Itā€™s very noticeable! My English must be terrible…

            • -3

@[Deactivated]: You make me confuse now.
              For example:
I used to eat $1 burger and then one day I try $15 burger, the difference in taste is noticeable. If I can turn back the clock I would never try to eat cheap $1 burger.

            • +4

@[Deactivated]: ChiMot doesn't seem to understand and isn't bothered to reread with new information.

"Siu_loong_bao switched from Kogan to Optus and the data speed is noticeably worse."

    • That mirrors my experience with Optus in inner Melb as well.

  • +1

Small plan isnā€™t attractive, only $10.50 saving ($0.50/month) over 2 years compared to $150*2 Boost mobile (double data + int call)

    • Boost Mobile's 80gb (6.66gb per month if saved equally) unlimited local and international calls to 30 countries (or was it 25 anyways the ones that count for me personally) for 12 months is probably the best things I have seen for a long time.

Maybe only one other plan in the past has topped it.

  • I have 3 services with them. Reception/coverage is pretty ordinary, but 2 are dor the kids so mot a huge drama.

  • why are they pushing for this 24m plan… it's awful

    • What is awful Kogan themselves or the 24 month plan because I love the concept of super long prepaid plans heck I want a 10 year one with Boost Mobile as my current plan with them is awesome but only 365 days :(

      • 10 years is way too extreme, so you happy to pay the same for 10 years, while people paying maybe half after year 2 or 3 from other provider (due to competition, new provider, discount, etc)

        • -1

I mean maybe a pro rata refund would make it ideal but honestly yeah.

Set and forget or basically convenience of time, effort and stress can sometimes trump those minor savings for me personally.

Obviously the deal would have to be really good and match current offerings but yeah like I can't see a better deal than Boost Mobile's $150 12 month plan atm which is effectively $12.50 per month or cheaper if you get it on a deal but man a longer version of that I can live with as a $10 version of that with the exact or very similar offerings sounds impossible atm price wise for the companies selling these plans unless it is charity.

Gotta be reasonable and yes the excess is paying for luxury and convenience.. I don't know I have just had some really bad experiences with mobile pre paid plans in the past so locking in a good one for that amount of time would basically make that stress free and headacheless for that one thing in my life for a good long time which is a plus for me in my book.

Locking in a 10 year home internet plan for 50/20 unlimited at $50/month or lower would be ideal as an example on the home nbn side as seeing something that is $30/month for just home internet at this point in time does not seem probable.

      • +8

        heck I want a 10 year one

that is the dumbest thing i heard for the day

        • -3

          must be a slow day

just because you can't understand it doesn't mean it is dumb but if I had to explain that to you then..

          • +3

@AlienC: folks try to avoid being in contract for a reason whilst you seem to love being in contract.

            • @tempura: I just love stability/reliability and not having to do the same stuff every year.

If you find a good deal then you are set for life.

              • +1

@AlienC: If you find a good deal then you are set for life.

Hehehe….That work for wife or girlfriend or partners but rarely for mobile phone plan lol….

                • @CyberMurning: LOL true that well I hope it works in reverse for me because I have no plans much for the other.. for now lol

  • -5

I hope other carriers follow suit.

Still waiting until the day I can buy a 5 dare I say it 10 year prepaid mobile plan (for cheap maybe 4gb data monthly minimum unlimited local calls but I mean international also would be nice but let us wish small first).

    • +6

So youā€™re stuck 12 months in when other carriers have cheaper lans with bigger allowances and you have 4 years to go.

      Sounds pretty ordinary.

      • -2

Why would you be stuck in a bad carrier obviously you do your research and pick a good one.

Same logic as picking a 12 month plan just longer.

I don't see a better prepaid plan topping my $150 12 month Boost Mobile plan for example coming in the next 12 months and if it does I will probably miss it.

It is all about how much you are willing to pay and at what price or trade off and for me getting or locking in 10 years at a decent rate is good enough for me.. it is like a mortgage pretty much just gotta shop around and pray for the best and know what you are getting into.

10 years of not having to do the whole mobile prepaid plan dance every year is enough for me to lose a few dollars over honestly my time is worth more than that and my mental health.

Got better things to do than keep thinking about the the yearly prepaid plan shopping please make it 10 yearly or more and I will be a happy man.

        • +4

geesus alien, we understand do research pick good one. but over time, price will go down. for example $20 per month for 30gb data maybe the best in the world, TODAY…… but in 2,3, or 4 years that may become one of the worse deal, maybe there is new technology and new company can offer $10 per month for 200gb, and we have 6G connection where your 30gb will gone in a week. its like you want to stick with the same thing while the world around you evolve to something better….
agree time is money. but you keep repeating 10 years, that is too long and wrong.
if you happy with 2 or 3, i can understand. most people will not.

          • -1

@CyberMurning: Fair enough but I am just saying there is a market for it definitely around the 4gb - 6gb range.

Just like some people are fine with dialup at a heavily reduced price I am fine with 4gb to 6gb for the next 10 years with unlimited local and international calls at around $12.50 price point or $10 :) please carriers.

  • i got the small one for $99 not paying $300 for it

    • Was that 12 or 24 months?

      • 12 months

  • Only 3GB on small? What happened to 7GB?

  • +1

2 years that is way too long. Anyway I am with Kogan after managing to get some error priced sims (I think it was $123 for 1 year of 13gb). When my plans will be up in 6 months I will go to catch if they put half price again. For $135 you can get 12.5gb a month (less with UNiDAYS 10%off and discounted gift vouchers). I donā€™t think there will be any 1 year plans cheaper than that.

  • +2

My plan with Kogan was out of contact for less than 9 hours and I was offered 12 mth Large plan for $107
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/7576255/redir

    • that is a good one but a bit too risky to wait till out of contract without backup sim ready…..

  • +1

Would not buy. Service is terrible on my 1 year plan currently but when I bought a new customer Sim for 4.90 and put it in the service was amazing. I can't prove it, don't even understand it, but feel like Kogan give people locked in lower service priority. 1 day text delays, ozbargain not even loading etc. On a new customer Sim…no issues.

    • So not just me I got that 1 day text delay too! And I'm in Sydney.
Well you get what you paid for

  • Have been with kogan for two years and won't be renewing when it expires in November. Like others, I have bad reception. When I'm on a call I sometimes can't use internet at all. Hoping there'll be a JB/Telstra deal at the time.

  • Metro areas, vodafone network is fine but on the commute from south west to the city, its a pretty shitty and spotty experience.

    • Correct. After wollicreek further down, bad internet

  • Can kogangift cards bought from woollies this week be used to pay for it? Ie, get another 10% off?

    • Yes

  • +1

If buy one get one free, I will go for it.

  • Good for parents or older people who dont want to think about their phone plans

  • i cannot rely on vodafone as a primary sim card, the $2~$5 for $40gig/pm throw away monthly prepaid is good enough.
