Kogan Mechanical TKL Keyboard Outemu Brown Switches $35 + Shipping (Free Shipping w/ Kogan First) @ Kogan

290

A slightly cheaper price on the Kogan mechanical ‘boards. Note these are the ten-keyless design so they don’t have a numpad, useful if you really want to save space and which is helped further by the island design with no frame. I bought the same one in full-size and it’s pretty good, with a solid build and nice feel. The Outemu brown switches are reasonably quiet, although I did lash out an extra $1.33 for a packet of o-rings off eBay to make them quieter still. They’re not in the same quality bracket as genuine Cherry switches but you’d never get those for the same price.

Shipping is extra unless you have Kogan First membership (that’s if anyone is buying it).

  • Might take a punt on this, own a K68 and had a K70 but hate the cherry reds!

Have bought 3-4 cheapies from Amazon and actually use one of those currently. Picking this up to try the 10keyless design

    • Apparently the TKL version doesn't have customisable RGB and is just rainbow vomit from what I've heard. Anyone care to confirm?

      • +2

Colours not customisable but there are different presets you can switch between. I not fussed about Unicorn barf so I usually disable the LEDs…

      • +1

Can confirm. You can swap between some preset RGB lighting but most are too BOOMZ for the office.
The one I've settled with is illuminating just the 1 keypress. Love the portability of the keyboard and ease of use.

Keep in mind, it sits quite high so I've bee. Hunting around for a TKL wrist rest for it.

Nonetheless, you get what you pay for and for this price, it's worth it having around.

        • Agreed completely. I use Model M's and Unicomps but this is my portable keyboard (for when I am in the library :D)

          • @bdl: I had a Uniicomp with buckling springs at work and was told to take it home. :(

I loved the Unicomp, too bad it wasn’t co-worker-friendly. Nobody’s complained again since I’ve been going through a succession of KBs with brown switches

            • @Chazzozz: @Chazzoz - shame you couldn't get rid of the coworker :(

            • @Chazzozz: Trivia: In IBM Model M, Lexmark, and Unicomp buckling spring keyboards, a sheet of membrane switches is used to complete the electrical contacts, just like rubber dome keyboards.

        • Is there a preset to turn the RGB off completely?

          • @ShrimpDuck: There should be, or use one of the custom presets and just not select a light pattern. I’m not in front of my own ‘board to test, though.

          • @ShrimpDuck: Yeah there is.

  • Note that the colour of each key doesn’t change. The ones that are red in the picture (the left side) are only ever red, the purple ones down the centre are only ever purple, etc.

IMO this keyboard should not be described as “RGB”.

I like the keeb in all other respects. I spend another $30 on alternate keycaps to cover up the awful colouring and it’s great now.

    • +1

Which keycaps and where from please?

    • +1

It 100% can be changed to varying levels of unicorn vomit or solid colour options using the function key and if yours doesn't then it is a faulty unit.

Purchased one of these for my son and will hopefully be delivered early in the week.

For those that want true RGB and a choice between red, brown or blue switches - this might be another consideration, however it is a little more expensive.

    • I’ve found Kogan shipping very fast, usually dispatch next day and comes day after.

  • Bought three of these for myself and kids -> pretty noisy if you're coming from membrane keyboards -> but otherwise seem very good, some 3-4 months down the track. Heaps cheaper than anything else I could find that seemed vaguely comparable.

  • Anyone have experience with this keyboard and the red switches? Are they super loud as well or are they quite close to regular cherry MX reds and aren't so obnoxious and blues?

    • I just got my TKL w/brown switches in the mail. If this is anything to go by the REDs are going to be LOUD! These browns are the loudest switches I've owned (have x2 cherry reds and outemu reds)

Its not so much the switches its the keycaps bottoming out, might just need some o rings
