From my limited experience, a 'drill driver' is good for general use and "casual" stuff. A 'hammer drill' is more hardcore and can put screws into concrete or steel etc.
Any Ryobi/Bosch/Dewalt drill driver should do a fine job. If your dad has one of these brands' other cordless tools, I'd stick with that brand (usually the batteries are interchangeable).
I agree, but if he doesn't have a drill, what are the odds he's got other cordless tools? He might do, but it could be unlikely.

Which selected stores are they? Certain stores in particular or does it depend on the product?
Some larger stores will have quite a bit of stock but smaller stores might not have a big range. Unfortunately as stores are independently owned we don't have full visibility of their current stock levels. Best to call your local store if you're unsure or buy online and it'll be delivered to the store usually within a week.

Sadly, it doesn't get great reviews for penetrating timber. Considering I want to use it on hardwood, it's probably not a good choice.
