      • Yeah ok fair enough jelly fun does look on a trajectory to superced this so thanks for pointing it out.

  • +1

except the convenience of the mobile sync , Idon't see a point - got VPN setup so no middle man required. encoding? really?

  • anyone managed to setup plex with aussie freeview IPTV channels?

running plex on a qnap nas, but cant get the few ive tried to work (PlexIPTV, xTeve etc)

  • +1

Is this only useful if you are still torrenting?

    • +2

My entire library is rips of physical media I own the disc for. I rip the films and then can stick them in storage. When I want to play something I don't need to hunt for the disc. So no, the app doesn't need to be for torrent users but it is for people that have their own digital libraries comprised one way or another. If you use Netflix and other streaming services exclusively then it hasn't got a lot of value.

      • Agree. I have like 100's of BluRays and 1000's of DVDs. They still make a nice background in my living room, but I no longer use them. It is too painful to find anything (i.e. when I feel like a comedy with Will Smith). It is painful to sit through the 5 minutes of FBI warnings in 287 languages flicking through about stealing this movie, then another 2 minutes for the Blu-ray player to sort things out before even start playing the movie.

      • I’m the opposite. I too have hundreds of bluray and 4Ks.
But I prefer the satisfaction of placing a disc into the 4K player.
I am subconsciously satisfied that I am getting the best quality images and sound from the physical media as opposed to something that is compressed.

More importantly, I don’t have time to rip my whole collection and TB of disk space can be expensive.

        • How good does it feel when it goes all the way inside

When you see all that beauty on the big screen im like hells yeah baby!

        • Using Plex has been a good compromise to keep my wife happy while still allowing me to buy movies. I love having them on display but she hated it. When I make digital copies it's as much about being "out of sight, out of mind", than anything else.

  • +1

Thanks OP, this worked for my account.

Something that I found extremely handy with the Pass are the enhanced Dashboard features and metrics. I share my library with various family members / relatives and am able to track what and when they watch (the history / logs are a little more detailed with a Plex Pass). It also helps somewhat with troubleshooting when they have issues streaming from me.

Whether or not it is worth the $99 which I've just paid for, is yet to be seen.

  • +1

Thanks Op. Finally bought and hope they don't cancel the damn service in my lifetime! For those asking why buy it? I'm a techie and have operated my Plex server (on FreeNas for years now) but bought it purely for the convenience of downloading shows/movies straight to mobile devices:
    1. My wife is not so techie, so now she can download her shows/movies on her tablet without needing me to do it.
    2. When you return home, you know exactly where you are at all times when streaming (in our case) from either XB or PS4 app
    3. Future proofing for the kids to have their own account with lockdown for just the kid friendly programs

    DVR is crap for me.
Going to try the Photo sync thing and see how that goes as currently I sync all my photos to OneDrive where we don't see them again very often.
Music sync with normalisation will be good since my tracks are often all sorts of volumes!

  • Good deal

I bought a lifetime pass after using the free version for a few years. Figured I should support them for making such an awesome product.

  • +2

    THANKS OP!
Was waiting for a deal like this.
I never got a targeted offer.
    This is just SUPER deal!
Had to create a new account as I could not upgrade my existing monthly subscription.

  • +1

Wouldn't accept the code for my existing account.

Worked for a new account, took a few minutes to figure out how to change ownership of the server. Back up and running now, thanks OP!

  • +1

    Worked for me. Yay thanks

  • Acquire TV/Movies -> Plex Updates -> I/partner watches on TV via Chromecast or on Phone/Tablet.

Don't think I'll ever need the Plex Pass unless they kill off the free service…

    • +1

Dude, you just touched Christie Boner's hoo-hoo.

  • +1

Just purchased. Thanks @indomatic - great find.

  • Thanks OP but "code not invalid" for me :(

  • +1

    Woo! Worked for me!
    Thanks for the great find!

  • Just purchased so still active. Must be activating in an account that does not have a current subscription!

  • I purchased on my existing account that was monthly using https://www.plex.tv/plex-pass/purchase/?plan=lifetime

    • And it accepted the discount code?

      • It did, but I'm not sure it worked. PayPal has charged me $99, but no indication in my account settings that I've got the lifetime pass…

  • I get mad every time I see this… I legit signed up like 3 weeks ago!!

    • +1

      Refund and redo big boy

  • +1

Thank you, I have been waiting for this!

  • Does the android plex app still suck when you have a paid subscription? I have to force close the app and reopen it every time I want to watch something on the TV.

I just tried installing plex on my server and apparently I need to completely reinstall the app to connect to a different plex server with the app.

    • Its pretty good at the moment, but I'm sure the next time they redesign the app the whole thing will break again.

  • This is a good deal. I paid $75usd for lifetime membership in 2013 and have got my money's worth several times over. I have an old Windows box I set to come on the arvo and turn off at night that use for server.

  • Didnt really need it, but got it anyways in case plex gets greedy and keeps stripping functionality from the free version….

    • Which functionality did they strip?

They only add things that aren't available.

      • If it ever gets bought out by a big listed commercial company or private equity then value will get squeezed hard

        • Yeah but if that happens, good luck with them honouring existing lifetime subscriptions.

  • +1

Thank you for posting, I have snapped this up and it worked for me and I was on a free account.

  • Didn't work for me

  • +1

Thanks, been looking for a code for a while. I use plex virtually every day for the past five years so for me saving $60 is a bargain.

    • 3.3 cents a day… YEAH!

  • +2

Thanks very much, thought I would check OzBargain before paying $160!

  • Still not sure why I'd change over from Kodi to Plex. Better do some research quick.

  • +1

Cheers OP. Worked for me and have had trials before.

  • I understand that Plex is basically a Media Data Base but would I still need to pay for Stan & Netflix subscriptions if I have Plex? Or is there a way to put everything that is on those streaming services onto my Plex Pass Account so I can access it anywhere without paying the month streaming fees.

I'm definitely a novice in this area so any details or info would help!

    • +1

Plex is for media you own on your local network HDDs. If you're a Netflix/Stan user, Plex is of no use unless you wanted to ditch the Netflix and Stan subscriptions in favour of starting to "obtain" all your content from here on out. =]

      • I wouldn't say Plex is of no use. We have Hulu/Amazon/Netflix currently but also use Plex. The streaming service has all the things we'd watch once and/or don't want to buy, Plex is a constant source of things I loved enough to get a copy of. A lot of what I have on my Plex server won't be available on the streaming services I use.

        • So Plex is basically a place to store purchases or copies I've already made. Say I downloaded a movie online, I can store it on Plex, but basically I would need to locate it myself. Plex won't find the movie I'm after and download it right?

  • +1

How does everyone run their own servers? Is it worth buying a small cheap computer with tons of HDD space that i can fill up and run as a server? All my media is scattered all over multiple hard drives.

    • I'm testing out hosting all the files on a Google Drive account and using stablebit to mount GD as a "physical" drive so plex can see it.

      • Interesting… I didn't know that could be done. Probably wouldn't work for me as I have probably more than 6tb of accumulated media and its always growing. Eventually i want to run it to my projector. Let me know how you go with the google drive account and if it works well.

        • +1

You can get an unlimited google drive account by registering an email address as a business and buying the drive space from google for $10 a month, or you can do a shady and purchase a one-off account from eBay for ~$5.

Seems to be working pretty well, just tried watching bohemian rhapsody in blue ray and notice VERY little difference, mainly just a saturation effect - prominent in white objects.

Will update further if I run into complications, but as of now it seems very viable.

Mines on a Windows 10 PC with an i5 or i7 processor in it (I do the ripping and encoding on the same PC, so wanted something with a bit of grunt to save on time). It's a mITX form factor system with a case that accepts about 8 hard drives (5x 3.5" and then another 2x 3.5" or 3x 2.5"). I run the OS off a small m.2 SSD to get aquick boot etc and then all the other bays are just full of drives I've gathered from all over. Some are 256GB 2.5" up to 8TB drives. They're mainly HDDs I pulled from externals but also 1 or 2 NAS drives…whatever was a good $ per GB ratio at the time.

For my case I really hated the amount of time it took to rip all those films, especially when BluRays would be in the region of hours. Add tagging etc and it was a slog. As a result I purchased Stablebit DrivePool which creates a virtual drive by combining all my non OS system drives into a virtual partition. I have this virtual drive set to replicate all my media with a 1:1 copy that gets replicated across 2 seperate physical drives at any time. It means I need double the storage of what I'll actually use as I'm making copies of everything, but it's simpler and easier to recover in a disaster scenario than other raid options. Works well if you can wear the inefficiency to duplicate and therefore storage cost. The nice thing is that as its not raid and each copy of a file always exists on a single drive, you can yank a drive and it wont upset anything. The tool will just see that a drives gone and a file now lacks its redundancy, and it can create another copy elsewhere. Makes replacing dead drives dead easy and super quick.

I use that same PC for other server like tasks. Was running home automation off it but moved that to a RaspberryPi, but still use the same PC as a Ubiquiti Unifi Controller.

Another option I'd look at if starting completely from scratch, and if power consumption is important, would be to look at a Synology NAS. Make sure its one with a decent processor, but that should be a nice and simple option to go with. Only real reason I went with a desktop over this myself is I already had the case and a number of small HDDs but anything more than a 4 bay NAS was looking expensive and I'd need to replace all my drives I had at the time to get the storage I needed.

      • Thank you for the very detailed reply. i was going to build something myself, but maybe a synology NAS is the answer. I'll look into it.

      • -1

Ripping dvds/blurays is a waste of time when you can download an already ripped bluray in 10 minutes and have it ready for watching.

    • +1 for a Synology NAS as Smigit mentioned. I bought one recently and am still finding out things it can do. Absolutely fantastic device that just works.

I purchased a Plex pass to enable hardware transcoding on the NAS as well as the download option for the kids.

      • Ive been keen on a NAS for a while. May i ask which model Synology you picked up?

        • Purchased a DS1019+ from Computer Alliance after considering the DS918+ (which was out of stock when I was looking). Both have the same processor but the 1019 comes with a little more RAM out of the box plus the extra storage bay.

          • @Singu1arity: Have you got the DVR from Plex running on the Synology. Was wondering if this might work at all?

            • +1

@kulprit: I haven't tried to be honest. It's not really something I'd use.

Waited a year for this. Thanks OP.

So it seems like you can watch live US tv channels with this subscription? Is that the case or am I missing something? Just don't want to blow $99 on nothing.

    • +1

      No you are wrong.

  • Am I missing something ?
I thought you have to pay extra now to a 3rd party (for epg) to watch tv so where's the value in this ?

    • You can link the an XML from this site.

      Works well.

      http://www.xmltv.net

      • Thanks tdrive. I'll check it out.

    • Plex can be used for other things besides live TV.

  • wow it was on 444 just now haha votes..

That is MEGA DEATH! / bad luck

  • Missed out, procrastinated too long. Did anyone who bought the lifetime PlexPass realize they don't need it want to sell it to me? If that is even possible..
