Problem is finding a reasonably priced ticket back to Australia

    • +8

      Exactly.

With little to no award availability on flights returning to Australia, you're looking at a very expensive one-way cash fare back home.

      A terrible deal.

      • +3

One way flights can be 70 - 80% of a return fare too!

    • +1

Its a one way trip for the plane onto its graveyard in Nevada.

      • Most likely Victorville, CA

    • +1

Agree. I looked at the return flights for business class and they are as scarce as hen’s teeth.

Just one flight back about a month later on some pacific airline to auckland and then qantas from auckland back to oz. this ends up being a 19 hour+ flight including stopovers.

It’s really more of a nostalgia thing. I flew on 747s most of my life and still think it’s the best plane ever. Better than the Airbuses with the pitot wing issues and crashing problems and the new Boeings now grounded after two fatal crashes. If they could only rejig the engines to be more fuel efficient they would still be a force in the airline world today.

      • 747-8 is the version with updated new engines. Same engine model as 787 (except 4 of them). Less than 50% greater carrying capacity than the 787, but twice the engines. Still flopped commercially.

        • The issue with 747-8 and A380s is that they were design on the assumption of a hub and spoke system, and the hubs will have limited slots aka need big planes. Except that we are going direct flights instead. So both "flopped".

        • Loved the 747-8… kE's business on their 747 is close to first class product offering, plenty of privacy… with free overnight airport hotel @ Grand Hyatt too.

    • Use points LAXHNL then book a one way jetstar HNLSYD :)

Did somebody say "sky high ozbargain meet-up "

  • Anyone know how many points this type of fare would usually cost?

    • Normal points prices…

      • +3

Thx. So not really a bargain. More of an exclusive for points holders.

  • Even if its not targetted, still a crap deal. Can fly return usually under $1000. This is only one way. If you value the points to be 1.2c/point, then its a no brainer to book this.

    • +9

a no brainer to book this.

No brainer to not book this. And I totally agree.

      • +1

Agree bad deal don't forget about taxes and surcharges

  • +3

Yeah, the points are the same, although availability will be better as will the inflight service as it likely to be a special flight, they will probably be special give aways and other things that you wouldn't get regularly.

It's a bit of an enthusiast's plane trip.

    • Its the last 400, but Qantas still have plenty of 400ERs left. Not that special of an event……

      • +1

It the last Rolls Royce RB211, so something special about it.

  • How much can I sell 190k Qantas points?

  • +6

The cheapest cash fare back looks like Hawaiian $750

Bit add on $200 Qantas fees it’s the same cost really as a $1000 fare. Expect your negative a lot of points…

This really is only a good deal if you can get a reward seat back, but having a look at Virgin I can get reward economy seats for most of October anyway so what is the point of this deal aside the 747 Nostalgia

    • I've seen Hawaiian occasionally do one-ways from west coast to Syd for about $400 AUD. Not right now.

I flew LGB-HNL-SYD for that much a few weeks ago (and paid it with Amex Travel credit).

  • +2

Fly back in First Class with Alaska miles for 70k. Only thing is find availability.

  • +2

Grab a cheap flight to Honolulu from LAX, hang out in Hawaii, then Jetstar it home

  • +2

Couldn't pay me to go thru LAX

    • why?

      • Probably not registered for PayID

  • +2

Not sure how they justify nearly double the taxes for Premium Economy vs Economy.

    • +8

I know right, rich people usually pay less tax.

  • +8

What is the attraction of flying on an old dinosaur 747??

Last time I flew long distance on one it was terrible compared to a380 or dreamliner

    • +2

Let me guess, at the end of the flight, you are allowed to rip apart the plane, and take whatever on it with you?

    • -1

It's actually got exactly the same seats as the A380

      • +2

Which itself is 8 years behind competitor seats.

The A380 is MILES better than the 747 for flying comfort in any case - the only thing about the 747 is the nostalgia factor.

    • The tagline of the sale is clearly marketed to plane tragics.

      • +1

        plane tragics.

        Aerosexuals. (god bless 'em.)

  • Another option to position back is Southwest has cheap fares from California to Hawaii for $200 including bags on October.

  • +3

the sooner this dinosaur is out of the sky the better, absolute waste of 40k points

  • I mean this is hardly a bargain, Qantas is just opening up the points at normal rates. Keep in mind this is an old plane and the seats are old too (compared to their a330 and 787's).

  • +2

"Qantas Frequent Flyers have exclusive access"
… all 20 million of them!

    • unfortunate for 4.6 million to be left out.

      • or, fortunate for them to be left out!

  • +4

shame that the photo on their website doesn't show VH-OJU..but rather shows VH-OEH series 747 which is a -400ER not a -400

    • +2

      You had 1 job Qantas!
      Good eye.

  • Prices from Perth:

    Perth via Sydney

    Economy one way
    51,200 pts
    + $243 cash

    Premium Economy one way
    84,000 pts
    + $443 cash

    Business one way
    112,000 pts
    + $518 cash

  • Love the 747, but not worth it still

  • +3

I hate that in order to fulfill their commitment to putting out more rewards seats to justify their recent points devaluation they’re putting on these points planes.

I want more J seats on flights for times when I want to travel, not a mass of seats on a plane to a destination i’m not interested in at a time that doesn’t suit.

    • +1

You're competing with 20 million QFF members to book those reward flights. Best to stick with the 4.6M remaining and fly other airlines.

  • Anyone know how many qf 747s left and when they're going to go?

  • wonder if they'll let that aging thespian John Travolta get behind the controls! >.<

  • Various ppl here have mentioned 747 nostalgia… Honestly I am not sure why that's a thing…… old plane, small seats… what's to be nostalgic about? Unless you mean the trips you took with buddies when you were young?
