To see how you can DIY install the garage door opener, please see this video from the manufacturer!

  • I remember the PINEAPPLE deal from 17/12/2018 -is 239.2 lucky for you :-) ?

    • +2

Honestly, it's the only brand that offers DIY supported warranty. Given the general thriftiness/handyman nature of the average OzBargainer it made sense to us to offer the DIY motor.

Plus - We try to keep the price stable over long periods of time. No jacking here, folks! :)

  • +1

Got 2 of these in a past deal. Only used a couple of times as the house is going through a reno but so far so good, DIY install

  • +2

Just want to say I got an Auto Openers sectional opener (FM1000) from these guys a couple of years ago for our crappy old tilt door, and it still works perfectly with daily use.
The range on the remote is really good too.

    • +1

How did you install a roller motor on a tilt door?

      • +1

Quite well by the sounds of it.

      • DKStorm is referring to the Sectional Opener, also made by Auto Openers - You can see that one here for $223.20

On an aside, in the realm of "Interesting But Don't Do It" there are ways of getting roller door openers to open sectional doors, like this YouTube video here from a fella in Melbourne I know.

  • -1

There are plenty of much cheaper options on eBay. Claiming 1000N even.

Statutory warranty is not voided by DIY install.

    • Hi Manic!

I'd be happy to provide a breakdown on the other, cheaper, units on eBay if you could provide an example. Whilst I agree that there are cheaper units on the market, there's a reason why the folks that sell those motors don't specialize in garage door openers.

If you're interested in reading a wall of text, I provided a breakdown on a unit at the start of the year that you can read here.

Edit: Sorry, missed your note regarding warranty and installations. Another major manufacturer in Australia has made it very clear that both DIY installation and internet purchases only come with a 1 year warranty, despite the product (example, MR855MYQ) being identical whether you bought it from Merlin for their RRP of $799 or online @ $349.

      https://www.gomerlin.com.au/news/1-year-warranty-on-merlin-o…

      • Literally just had this merlin installed at $600. So if I purchased at $349 or $270 would labour be about $100? For future reference, not to complain to the company.

        • For some reason a few of my replies arn't posting - Sorry for the late reply mate!

I checked with our local company and they charge $150 for a labor-only installation. This would then be dependant on the difficulty of the installation. Some jobs have so tight a side room it requires the installer to remove the garage door from the wall to fit the motor on the door, which tends to lengthen the time on site. If you're also located in a far-flung hamlet, they might also charge travel.

Hope this helps! Out of interest, can you pm me who performed the installation?

          • @GrecDeFreckle: Thanks for the response. I will PM when home with the invoice. There are just no real garage resources online to do these types of comparisons. The previous system was a gliderol that had never been serviced in 30 years so had a good run, I decided to grease the guides with cooking oil.

            • @Pootie Tang: Awesome, thanks mate.

The industry is an odd one - Online manuals only became a standard around the late 00's, with manufacturers only JUST getting into the smartphone game in the last year or two. Unfortunately, unless you're in this industry or know anything about it, it's the same as going to a new car mechanic :)

As for cleaning the door guides out, make sure to only use silicone-based lube as other lubricants tend to gum the tracks up in the long run. Our local guys use a $5 can of it from Bunnings that works a treat. Just clean the tracks out with an old rag then hit it with some of that lubricant, you'll notice an immediate difference.

Another thing to check for is dings or bent metal. If it rubs on the door, it's placing strain on the motor. The older motors didn't have door profiling, which is something the Auto Openers Panel Opener / Roller Opener has (I think the Merlins have it as well?). Whilst it opens the door, the unit will constantly measure the force required and increase/decrease the force required. This extends the life of your motor, as the older AC units were hitting the doors at 100%, all the time which caused sprocket and gear issues down the line.

  • I Have a single panel lift door with a Glidermatic GTS motor.

    This can replace it?

    • You'd be better off with the Panel Opener ( found here for $279.20 ), as it's suited for Panel Lift Doors. This motor on the deal is for a roller door :)

      • Does the company offer installation as well, or parts only. Can you hook up a remote numeric keypad remote, or an external emergency key release?

        • Heya AussieBox, we're a supply only company. We've been on eBay for well over 10 years now though, so if you let me know your postcode I can recommend a local company to install the openers for you.

A compatible external key release would be this one here, for $37.60 delivered.

At this stage, I don't believe Auto Openers has a keypad for the Panel Opener / Roller Opener. However, if you have an old keypad from another we can normally get them to work with a receiver on the motor.

  • Any chance you got a deal for a belt system for a double garage door?

    • Hi mate, check out the Panel Opener by Auto Openers, for $279.20. It comes with a belt rail and it's stupidly quiet. My office at home backs onto the garage and I can only hear it if I'm listening for it.

      Suits doors up to 16.5m²
      Max peak pulling force: 1000N
      Minimum head room: 60mm
      Garage Illumination: Powerful LED Lighting
5 Year Warranty (DIY Installation Covered)

      • Can this be intergrated with Google Home?

        • With the GoGoGate2, yes. Interestingly, none of the major garage automation manufacturers in Austrlalia have made a smartphone kit that is compatible with Alexa, Google Home, Next etc. The functionality is limited to an app.

  • I have a carport where I would like to install a garage rolla door with one of these auto openers. The problem is that when it is closed it will block the front door entry. Does anyone know if this illegal or not?

    • I have a carport where I would like to install a garage rolla door with one of these auto openers. The problem is that when it is closed it will block the front door entry. Does anyone know if this illegal or not?

Put in a key override so if the power is out or the closer is broken you can still open it from the outside.

    • Our local company performs quite a few carport conversions, with one of the new guys here recently having one done. Our local area has a lot of homes with carports out the front of the home, with the front door behind the carport.

Depending on your specific area the legalities are different. You can see here for the ACT's rules and regs, for example.

Obligatory Not A Lawyer: I've never heard of an issue forming due to a carport blocking the front door. You can use the manual release on the motor to open the garage door, or install a battery backup should you have a power blackout which would still allow safe access to the street. Only issue that springs to my mind is potentially blocking the meter readers from getting to water, gas or electricity.

  • Thanks Maverick, will look into that but I'm still unsure if there are any public illegalities involved in blocking front door entry to my house or not?

  • +1

Do you have anything that allows the opener to be connected to WiFi/Google Home similar to Nexx?

    • We're in the process of stocking the newer iSmart Gate Kit! It has far greater connections and options available than any other kit I've seen on the market.

We're looking at a price tag of $250 at the moment, but it allows you to open the garage door with HomeKit, Google Home, iFTTT or with a native iOS/Android App.

  • +1

Thanks OP for the info. I plan on having a schedule set up on wifi to open in the morning and close at night to solve that problem. Looks like I can go ahead with it in that case just need to get some quotes on a rolla door first.

  • +1

OP is your company affiliated with any technicians that do carport conversions in the Benalla area?

    • Hi mate, try giving Twin City Roller Doors a call on (02) 6040 8666. They're also in Albury, but I believe they go out to Benalla for carport conversions and installations.

      • +1

        Will do thanks.

  • hey OP, got any deals on ATA PTX-4 door openers?

    • +1

      Certainly do!

You can get the genuine PTX4 remote control from here for $23.12, or you can get the Auto Openers aftermarket PTX4 remote from here for $15.96.

Auto Openers is also doing a V8 Corporate Giveaway promo, if anyone is a fan - You can check that out here.

TL;DR of the giveaway is that you buy any of the Auto Openers branded products and go into the draw to win a day at the Sandown 500 in the Rollcage, on the 10th of November. It's being drawn late next month, so not long now!

  • hi,

i notice you no longer have the grifco lr in stock?
    Are you planning on restocking?

i was looking at replacing a POS Boss unit, Door is only 16m2 but wanting something thats going to last and that i can add to existing merlin 2.0 remotes for other doors.

    Thanks

    • Hey mate, we have them on order and were hoping for them to arrive earlier this week. Literally any day right now.

What's the height/width of the garage door?

In regards to Boss units, they actually used to be acceptably good units back in the day. They're old tech, but very damn reliable. Unfortunately, we've experienced an insane amount of warranty issues on the BRD11 roller door units ourselves. From what we've heard, we're not the only ones.

I spoke to a technician about it a few weeks back actually, it appears that the boards are missing the PCB equivalent of a surge protector. This means that when the boards fail in 6-12 months' time, given the lack of a surge protector and the boards overloaded, the motors look like they have failed from a power surge when it was a poor cost-cutting decision. As they fail AFTER when people can leave feedback on eBay, unfortunately, not many folks are aware of the issue.

We offer the BRD11 for sale, as we do have some stock of them in the factory. But we also call everyone who orders one to explain why it's a bad idea… :)

      • my door is 4.8w x 3.4h.

Yes i have the brd11. had one replaced under warranty, which they diagnosed as circuit board failure. Ive had issues with range on/off, needing to be within 1m sometimes for it to work. But the most recent ongoing issue is sticking relays.

        • 16.32m² - This motor will be able to handle what you need.
If you wanted a slightly more powerful unit, Auto Openers makes a more stripped-down motor with the trade-off being more power. You can check that one out here for $211.20 delivered!

Circuit board issue - Bang on. Remote range issues in the 2000's were due to interference issues, with anything from doorbells do baby monitors reducing the range of the remotes. As the BRD11's are on 433MHz, it could be something wireless in your house/area that's affecting the range of the remotes.

All that having been said, sticking relays would be another board fault. Good chance if they're playing up, there's an argument for the receiver to be faulty as well. I'd get back in contact with your folks to get another board replacement mate.

Sounds like you've got a good local rep mate for it to be done under warranty though, there's a few that I've heard of that refuse to treat the issue as such and instead stick to the power surge issue. It's mainly on the rebranded BRD11 models though, as some dealers import them and are responsible for the warranty themselves rather than Boss.

  • Hey!

What is the smallest remote that would work with the ATA GDO-2?

Also is there anything that can automate these over wifi. To work with HomeKit etc.. mainly to check if the door is closed or not.

    Thanks!!

    • +1

      G'Day!

It depends on the version of your GDO2. The earlier versions used a cigarette box-sized remote control called a TXA1. Unwieldy and seriously old gear. Elsema make a remote control that replaces the older remote control, called a KEY301.

They've recently put through a (yet another) price rise we're trying to fight back on a little, as just two years ago we could sell them for $30, so we're unfortunately out of stock for the moment.

If you're wanting something smaller again, however, we could look into the option of a receiver and remote kit to get you whichever remote you'd like :)

      • Thank you - Yes it is the old TXA1! That KEY301 looks good for the moment. How hard is it to change the receiver on the GDO2 and what receiver/remote kit would you recommend? Otherwise I might just use the KEY301 until the whole thing needs to be replaced someday…

        • It's relatively easy to wire in a receiver to the terminals, however, as you're wiring in new hardware onto the older circuit board there is the chance that it would cause the board to blow, requiring a new motor. It's happened to me twice in 9ish years, but it's still a possibility.

The KEY301's are coming in hopefully tomorrow by the sounds of - Otherwise, it'll be a next week job :)

Check out the receiver and remote kit here!

  • Do you have anything that would suit a sliding garage door?

    • Unfortunately, no - Sliding garage doors are a unique, niche type of garage door. It's also not something we'd be able to compete with your local garage door company on with in terms of price, as we'd both be ordering the motor for the job as it was required.

Usually, side roll roller doors or sliding doors have someone in the area that specializes in them - You should give your area a quick google to see who comes up.

  • How does it compare to something from Bunnings:
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/chamberlain-handylift-plus-2-0-g…

    • +2

      TL;DR

The Roller Opener is right now $40 cheaper. When it's not on sale, the Roller Opener's $30 extra is found in the two extra remote controls, extra power and the way the warranty is handled.

Handylift operators are watered down Merlin operators, under the Chamberlain branding.

      • The Handylift does smaller doors, namely 13m² compared to 16.5m² - It doesn't sound like a lot, but that extra wiggle room means the Roller Opener isn't operating at peak capacity for the time it's installed on your garage door, affording it a few more years of operation time. This could be easily measured in years.

      • The Handylift comes with two remote controls, one of which being the Merlin E950M equivalent. The E950M has reviews on eBay noting the plastic, cheap feel of the remote control, as well as having a brittle cover. The Roller Opener comes with three keyring remote controls, as well as a wall holder/sunvisor attachement so you can store a remote either in your car or on the garage wall. I've got the Panel Opener at my house, which comes with the same remote controls. I use the third remote control on the wall in my garage, and give it to the relatives when they come to infest the house come to stay.

      • Finally, from the wording on the warranty it requires you to return it to Merlin in Lane Cove, NSW (that's where their Service Centre is located) so they can inspect and repair the unit. From experience, this is a 1-3 month long affair. The Roller Opener's Replacement Warranty lets me diagnose the issue over the phone and sent a replacement unit once we deem it to be a warranty issue.

So far the only issue we've had with this model is when people skip steps in the installation process and the motor refuses to set the limits.
With other brands of motors, however, you can tell when it's a warranty issue within 5-10 minutes on the phone, so this isn't exactly a lengthy process.

  • Is it easy to replace my Glidermatic GTS motor with your Panel Opener?

    • Very. There's a YouTube video showing the process - Check it out here!

  • So, about that GoGoGate2 - any stock/deal Op? Cheers

    • +1

No stock or deal as of yet mate - I'm trying to get a price good enough that I can do a deal on them, but at this stage, it'd be the same price from me as it would be from the manufacturer.

Head on over to the GoGoGate store and you can nab the Pro or the Lite version of the newer iSmart kits. The main difference is that the Pro does 3 entrances and the Light does one entrance. If you're in the mood for some camera monitored automation, the Ultimate comes with a camera. The Ultimate does have an ongoing app cost per year, however.

  • Any difference between GDO4, GDO5 and RM600? Will these models work with a remote keypad?

    • G'day,

GDO4 was an overhead garage door opener made by ATA.

The GDO5 / RM600 are two different models of roller door openers made by Auto Openers. The only real difference between them is the remote controls, as they switched to a newer type due to interference issues on the older remote controls.

The GDO5 does have a compatible keypad - I'm actually waiting on photos from our photographer before I can list them on eBay :)

  • what can you do the merlin elite myq kit with gateway/beams i think the kit model is MR865MyQ?

I am about to purchase one of these in the next few days.

    • Heya Strat, we had the motors come back into stock early this morning - Were promised that they would arrive Monday morning so we were able to put them up over the weekend.

Please see the merlin MR855MYQ here. Please note that the kit doesn't come with the MYQ Smartphone Kit (I think that's you mean by gateway?) or the PE Beams, they are additional extras. Also, please note that Merlin will only support you with a 1-year warranty, as the unit is being bought online.
