ESP LTD PB-401 Electric Guitar Pot Belly White w/ Seymour Duncans LPB-401PW $549 Delivered @ Belfield Music

60

Good evening all.

Just looking to buy a telecaster copy and found this deal. Not sure if this is considered to be a bargain, but it seems to be a versatile guitar for all.

Product Information:

The ESP LTD PB-401FM electric guitar features set-thru construction with a mahogany body. The mahogany neck has a thin ESP "U" neck contour and a rosewood fingerboard that is dressed with 22 extra jumbo frets. Other features include Tune-O-Matic bridge with a stopbar tail, Grover tuners, an Earvana compensated nut, dot inlays, and chrome hardware.

The ESP LTD PB-401FM electric guitar comes loaded with Seymour Duncan P-Rails. This is a full-size humbucker that splits into either a full-size P-90 or a special Alnico-powered single-coil Rail pickup. The humbucker sound is full and expansive, owing to the mis-matched coil configuration. The P-90 is a super fat. And the Rail coils, when used together, sound like the "2" and "4" positions in a great Strat. Perfect for a wide variety of styles including country, pop, surf, jazz, blues, classic rock, and heavy rock. Controls include master volume and tone, 3-way selector switch, and a 3-way mini-switch for rail-full-split.

Hope it helps.

I would say that's a good price - the pickups alone would cost over $300 for a set. Grover tuners too.
It's a pity my wife would kill me if I buy another guitar, or I'd be pretty keen on this.

    • Thanks man!

  • It won't sound like a telecaster, but seems a very decent guitar.

    • Yes, you are right, it seems to be more metal-oriented.

      • The pickups are quite unique. I think it will do much more than just metal.

Looks like a lot of fun :)

Is that around what you'd be willing to pay for a tele-clone?

If I were in that boat, I'd go second hand and cruise Scumtree + Facebook guitar groups for a "real", used, MIM Tele?

You might even get lucky and get an MIJ for another $100 or so.

    Good luck!!

    • I will keep trying, thank you :)

It's not a Tele, and won't sound or play anything like one. If you want a Tele, buy a Tele. Best Tele clone going bar none right now is Cort's Classic TC with Manson spec wound Korean pickups. Cort AU distro raised their prices 20% across the board a couple of weeks ago. If you're quick, there are still a couple floating around at the old price.

Alternative on a budget which can't be beat if you must have a Squier or Fender label is the Squier Affinity Tele for AUD$329. They play kinda' OK OOTB after a setup, but, swap out the machine heads, and if you don't like its PUPs, fit a set of Wilkinson alnico WVTs or vintage ceramics if you prefer and its on a whole new level. Affinities still have an Alder body, but with a more contemporary satin finished C profile neck (tick), with a narrower nut (tick) and larger radius fretboard (tick). Top load and thinner body makes SFA difference to tone notice outside pedantry despite all the BS you'll read. Swap out for a brass compensated 3 barrel bridge if preferred for that original Tele Twang with characteristic intonation idiosyncrasies for another AUD$25. All up, can turn them into truly tasty piece of kit that'll punch way above its price point for around an additional AUD$100.

        • Thanks= you for the help man, I recall last time you suggested me to have a look at Yamaha and Cort guitars, I could find a few used Yamaha at great prices but didn't buy one just yet. I just googled Cort Classic TC,
          Is it this one?

            @Yaren24: That's the one.

            Demo here.https://youtu.be/f4HUYcQhwSg

Have a search around online. That's the new current price at BM. Its still underpriced at that in AU, but Mannys still had a couple advertised at the old discounted price of $549 & $599 last week.

I own one, and it's my fave guitar even versus a PAC612VII and others I own and play. Its a quality unit.

            • @odal: $549? That is an absolute steal

              • @Yaren24: It is. Cort have been way underpriced in AU for some time. Even at its current price point of AUD$750, it represents solid value in terms of what it is as an instrument. Don't need to change a thing. Perfect as it comes out of the box, neck relief, action and intonation adjustments notwithstanding. Manson spec PUPs are tonally pleasing, powerful & versatile. The compound radius fretboard is guitarist heaven. I've had mine since Xmas 2017 and its still the fav guitar in my inventory. If it was stolen, I'd buy another one.

                • @odal: For similar prices, I could only get a 2nd hand MIM tele or CV tele, I am pretty sure this is way better value than the other 2.

                  • @Yaren24: Horses, courses. Try a few secondhand MIM tele's and new Corts?

Also consider resale. If there's a chance you might not want a T-style axe in few years, stay clear away from a Cort. This isn't a criticism on the instrument, I've enjoyed playing them in store - the market just isn't there.

                  • @Yaren24: Depends upon whether you want a guitar to play, display or w@nk over with the other l33tist kultsha right brainers. o.O

I remember when the drones were equally dismissive of Ibanez because it was unfamiliar "Made in Japan junk" brand. : )

                    • @odal: I'm not sure what you're upset with @odal, but if all of that was in response to my comment (?) I think you're unnecessarily getting your back up.

Summary: I like Corts, but they suffer (unfairly) when it comes to resale value.

i.e. Great choice if OP is confident they'll want that style guitar two years from now. Not so good if their taste might change.

Maybe it was the "steer clear" language I used in relation to potentially flipping it? Sorry if that was the case. I can see how that could get someone's back up :)

                      • @psnatch: My post you've chosen to take umbrage at wasn't directed to you, but to Yaren24. He can make up his own mind where he wants to go.

I was merely stating truths without a perspective distorted by any emotional associative bias for Fender or Gibson marketing or branding.

You and I hold differing perceptions of what represents "value", figuratively and literally. And that's OK. I hear yours.

                        • @odal: No umbrage, apparently just a simple misunderstanding on my behalf.

I think the language used is pretty revealing as to who's upset here, mate :)

                          • @psnatch: Not "upset" beyond not caring for your quite apparent though superficially disguised condescension clear in the transparently emotive and irrational language used by you such as "steer clear" and "real, used instrument", and I'm not intimidated by the likes of you from saying so if you want to push the point,as you quite apparently do with your continued trite oneupsmanship seeking nonsense.

                            • @odal: I'd like to extend this apology to you a second time:

Maybe it was the "steer clear" language I used in relation to potentially flipping it? Sorry if that was the case. I can see how that could get someone's back up :)

This isn't one-upmanship. This is me admitting (again) that my choice of words was poor and telling you that I'm sorry about that. I'd alter or delete them, if OzB allowed it.

                              Anyway, all the best!

                              • +1

@psnatch: Given the grace you've exercised, reciprocated if I miscomprehended your intent.

We share in common a love of all things guitar, and playing guitar methinks. Better we focus on that? I get it we both have the same intent, to assist Yaren24, albeit with differing perspectives. Best to you too.

                                • @odal: Thanks for the discussions guys, I will wait Before Christmas, there will be a big sale going on shortly. I think Cort is fantastic, very underrated brand, I am pretty sure for the same amount of I paid on Ibanez or Epiphone, Cort is a safer option and suits the market very well (budget-friendly and quality built instruments). I am not interested to resell guitars and I keep them for a long time until I am broke.

                            • @odal: Hi odal, I just wondering if I should buy a Cort TC Classic or Squier Classic Vibe 50s Strat?

                              • @Yaren24: Your call, but a strange one. They are two very different guitars. Before you buy anything, in your own interest decide whether your want Tele or Strat tones. In particular re these two, the necks are very different. Have you tried the Classic Vibe neck? Ugh! Chunky vintage C, constant small radius. Classic TC is modern slim D, compound & larger radius. Very different in every respect.

Don't be sold on Fender's "Classic Vibe" (Squier) subliminally appealing marketing. I get the pull that has on the pysche.

If I wanted a SSS config. trad. Strat, I wouldn't buy a Squier Classic Vibe personally for a few reasons, but predominantly because I don't like the neck characteristics in particular.

OTOH, I love the neck on the Cort Classic TC. My favourite neck of my 7 current electrics. It's also my fav guitar of the 11 I own & play. If you want a modern quality playable well priced Strat style guitar, consider the Cort G280DX. HSS and more a SuperStrat really. An alternative to the Pacifica 612V at a similar pricepoint. Whichever you decide if any, have a good think about what you really want and why before you buy. Your current either-or choice seems conflicted to me. Best.

                                • @odal: Hi odal, just let you know I bought a Yamaha PAC611 about 10 minutes, it was probably my favourite in terms of versatility.

                                  • @Yaren24: Thanks @odal, The main reason I bought PAC611 is because it was on a sale item, I had a look at Classic Vibe Strat, I think for the sake of saving bit more money I would rather buy some thing I can keep for a long time, I prefer the styles of PAC than Cort TC Classic, when I heard some sounds from Pacifica from Youtube Reviews, it is another level to Squier CV. Build quality and everything else is unmatchable with guitars with similar price brackets. Thank you so much for your help, much appreciated.

                                  • @Yaren24: Very nice choice. Did you get the fixed bridge or vibrato bridge model? Those Seymours rock. The TB-14 is a great fit with the P-90.

      • np, to clarify you weren't actually considering the guitar in your original post, right? I assumed you were just sharing it as a random nice looking toy, not as a consideration for the tele that you ultimately want.

No idea where you're based, but this is the first MIM Tele that came up on Scumtree for me:
        https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/cambridge-gardens/guitars-am…

Do you have any mates that play a bit? I'd ask them to come check out second hand guitars (like the above) and help you decide how much to offer ;)

Again, I'd always suggest spending $$$ on a real, used instrument that you'll likely keep forever over something new. That's just me though.

      • +1

you should definitely save your money and look around. if you want new you should keep an eye on Manny's sales, they had a massive sale on last year and i think they forgot to exclude certain items, i managed to score a brand new 2018 MIM Strat for like $750. if you look at japanese sellers on yahoo.jp or ebay you can find some really good deals for second hand guitars.

        • Yahoo Japan and Ebay Japan, do they ship to Aus as well?

          • @Yaren24: for yahoo.jp i believe it will require that you to use a delivery proxy service (e.g. Buyee this will auto-translate stuff too). ebay will usually vary depending on the seller, i just go to the australian ebay website and search from there. searching things like "fender mij", "guitar mij" isn't really a good idea either, most of them never specifically mention the term "mij" in their sale titles/description since it's already implied that's where the instrument was made. i tend to search using the names of classical guitar luthiers from japan (masaru motono/ryoji matsuoka/masaru kohno) to find as many 2nd hand sellers as i can and then just go to their store page to search for anything i'm looking for in particular. in regards to CITES i'm not sure if any official decision has been made about allowing guitars with rosewood so you might need to message the seller asking if they are allowed to ship items with rosewood to australia. i've personally ordered a classical guitar with rosewood from the seller "yokohama-premium" and didn't have any issues getting past customs. the only bad thing about getting it from ebay is that japanese sellers trade in USD and our $ is pretty low at the moment.

            • @zfx0: Thank you, did you find it cheaper to buy it from Japan instead of buying it here from Gumtree 2nd handed?

              • @Yaren24: definitely, the particular guitar (also came with a hard case) i purchased was about $800 USD (marked down from $1500 USD) with free shipping. the same model listed elsewhere (pre 1975) is $2500 USD + shipping. only issues really were just a cracked machine head although it was still usable. the condition of the body/neck itself is really good.

        • Mannys' annual 15% off pre Xmas sales on their already killer prices were great buying. I planned it strategically and bought two guitars in 2017 and 2018 at what very good -understated, prices. However, they've since been taken over by Store DJ and undertaken an expansion into Brisbane with rebranding (?) of the Brisbane store as Mannys.

Relevant to that, I've observed the implementation of an obvious board/management directed policy change regarding margins and thus affecting their guitar pricing having occurred with the last quarter along with narrower range refocusing Mannys marketing on brands and segments which whoever's holding the new broom of current management believes will deliver that for them. Single line rort distro with 'everyone gets a free drink on the consumer' margin brands like Fender, Gibson (reborn) and Ibanez seem to be that current focus. Yamaha too as they're an easy and affordable sell within their segment demographic. Notably concurrent with this, Mannys have reduced significantly, promotion of the Cort catalogue product.

          • @odal: Hi odal and zfx0, Yamaha has always been solid in this country, so much cheaper than Fender, but offers much greater values, that extra $200 - 300 is an absolute saving for most people on a tight budget. Not sure about Ibanez, Ibanez has been polarised, some people like them and some people hate them. I live near Brisbane, there is a music store called Music440 seems to have great sales. The best thing to do is to buy clearance stocks if in good conditions. People don't buy guitars every month :)

With buying in Japan, not sure how much shipping for some items let's say under $1000 aud. But I am always keen to give a try on their guitars, pretty sure they have prob the best ones in the market.

            Thanks guys

            • @Yaren24: i've had a friend tell me about music 440 being a pretty good place, will check it out sometime. shipping is what kills bargains when importing from japan since they trade in USD. some sellers do have free shipping though so you if you look hard enough you can find some great deals.

              • @zfx0: Hi zfx0, I just had a look at Yahoo Jp Auction, how did you manage to get free shipping btw? Thanks

                • +1

@Yaren24: the guitar i purchased was from an ebay seller which offered free shipping. if you use yahoo jp auction you're going to have to pay some form of shipping when you use a proxy service like Buyee.

  • +2

It's OK IFF it's what the buyer wants and will use it. It is a bit of an oddball config, regardless it's loaded with Seymour PUPs. Clearly Anyone actually wanting a Tele would pass. There are equally good to better deals going IMV depending upon intended purpose and prefered instrument. Not disparaging, just pointing out what should be the obvious. Belfield are good to deal with. Not associated with them in any way other than as a satisfied repeat customer in the past.
