    ThinkPad E495

    I thought about it… Then said nah….

    Is that a 4:3 screen ???

    • +1

      No.

similar to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/475417 but the Price has got better.

That one was actually some $50 cheaper after cashback

edit: was $658.38 after cashback according to this comment

  • You'd think Lenovo would put a bit more effort into their listings. The description is super short, there's no specs listed in the description, and I'm pretty sure one of the images is distorted (which makes it look like a 4:3).

    • -4

(which makes it look like a 4:3).

How do you know it's not?

  • Still confused if this processor is better or i5? Did some reading and had mixed opinions.

    • +4

It varies between laptops since their memory configuration, TDP limits and general cooling capacity can have a significant impact on these Ryzen APU's.

This is basically equivalent to a 8250u, the i5 has roughly 5-10% better single core performance, with the 3500u being 10% ahead in multicore performance. Efficiency is about the same too. You'll struggle to find a meaningful difference in raw CPU performance.

However, the integrated GPU on the 3500u is about twice as fast as the 8250u and will absolutely destroy it in gaming. Though it is handicapped by 1x8gb ram as opposed to 2x8gb or even 2x4gb (Having dual channel ram helps the iGPU immensely).

Overall, you shouldn't notice a difference unless you're gaming off the iGPU.

      • No gaming at all. So, both are pretty much the same performance wise.

    Still no illuminated KB… Shame

  • Hi,

Newbie here - Just a question regarding the E595 - Is this a decent laptop for some light gaming? How would GTA V perform on this laptop?

What represents better value for a gaming style laptop? The E595 or the MSI GL63 8RCS-060?

    Thanks from a newbie!

    • The only game you'd get this running comfortably is Tetris.

For GTA V, you'll probably want a beefier GPU, 1050ti minimum.

      • +1

Thanks for the heads up! I've upvoted you to cancel out your neg!

        • +1

Thanks mate :) You can get the 1050 to play a lot of games well, but for GTA V to be enjoyable, I would highly recommend something more powerful.

      • +1

i played gta v on a skylake mobile i5… it was hilarious. you can get about 20-30fps at 1080p minimum settings, but if you go too fast (driving/flying), sometimes textures will disappear and you won't be able to see any roads/buildings/cars etc. i found it bearable playing with my mates, but wasn't worth it going solo.

you can probably do it on this APU, should be about 3x the performance of the igpu I had, but if I were going for a gaming laptop today, I'd go for one of the ~$1.4k lenovo 1660ti laptops when they have a decent chunky cashback (~14%).

tbh, it's a hard choice considering this is half the price, nobody knows how strong the zen2+navi apus will be next year. if you get this, good idea to get a dual ram kit on ebay (sales).

    • Don't game on a laptop. Just don't.

      • +1

Thanks for the neg. Why not? Sure, not as good as desktop, but if someone wants to game on a laptop, I don't see why not…

        • +1

I didn't neg you. Gaming on laptop is expensive to get anywhere near the performance of a desktop, and it just not worth it.

The E495 could play GTA V at 60fps on medium settings and 1366x768. High + 1920x1080 is less than 30fps. Not sure if there is a combination of low settings but high resolution that would give you good frame rates at 1920x1080.

I'll also re-post this from the last E495 deal:

League of Legends: 100fps on low, 70fps on ultra
      Apex Legends: 50fps on low
      Battlefield V: 50fps on low
      Fallout 76: 41fps on low
Black Ops 4: 60fps on low
Fifa 2019: 90fps on low, 50 or 60fps on ultra
Monster Hunter World: 30fps on low
Kingdom Come: Deliverance: 30fps on low
Fortnite: 60-100fps on low, 30 or possibly 60fps at 1920x1080
Rocket League: 90fps on low, 44fps at 1920x1080
      Civilization VI: 60fps on low
      Overwatch: 100fps on low, 30-40fps at 1920x1080
      The Sims 4: 150fps on low, 58fps on medium, 30fps at 1920x1080
Counter-Strike GO: 120fps on low, 42fps on ultra
Diablo 3: 100fps on low, 47fps on ultra
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, 60fps on low, 35fps on high

My understanding if that a second stick of RAM (for dual channel operation) is highly recommended if you want to do any half-serious gaming or 3D work on it.

      All benchmarks from here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-RX-Vega-8-GPU-Bench…

    • its decent for the money and ryzen 5 is pretty good it would be ok for light gaming, but gta v is not light at all. if you want gaming you need a decent graphics card this doesnt have one at all

  • Whats with the huge bezel at the bottom of the screen. Weird looking!

    • I like it… I like it a lot!

  • +4

The specs are good for the price, but why is Lenovo stuck in the 1990s in terms of looks?!

  • Looks like the E595 is still in stock for $753

  • +3

The bezel isn't too excessive - but the image distorts it.

This is a better representation I think https://www.jw.com.au/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9d…

  • Anyone comment on the screen quality?

    • +3

Received one of them yesterday – the screen is surprisingly better than I expected, even good. Maybe not too bright.
The laptop's look and feel way better than E560 (compared them side-by-side)

Still waiting on my delivery from an order about 3 weeks ago. Their support is less than helpful!

  • Can someone recommend a decent 15.6'/17' laptop with a glossy bright screen (300 nits or more). I need it mainly for multimedia and browsing. Absolutely no gaming. Quick responses appreciated!!
