½ Price Pacific Organic Virgin Coconut Oil 700ml $5 @ Woolworths

740

Organic coconut oil is half price. It's my go to healthy fat for cooking. The packet says you can use it for your skin as well, so that's why I enjoy frying naked, as the spitting fat is good for me…

This stuff takes the heat, and makes things crispy.

The packet says you can use it for your skin as well

    You cook your skin ?????

    • +5

I enjoy the spitting fat. Don't judge me!

    • Expecting a comment like…How many Virgins did it take to fill the jar?

  • +3

    Great deal. Thanks OP.

  • Good deal.

I threw ours out (total waste, I know) due to the saturated fat content.

Now using healthier fats in foods.

I threw ours out (total waste, I know) due to the saturated fat content.

Now using healthier fats in foods.

did you throw out the coconut oil? which fats did you switch to?

      • -5

Yes, I threw out the coconut oil (same item as this deal).

Was reading a book which said if the fat is a solid a room temperature, that's not a good sign.

Previously just used oils, and now reverted back to oils.

Just research what saturated fats do to your body (:

        • +4

Just research what saturated fats do to your body (:

Is this the cholesterol bit? Some say its outdated (the american heart foundation was not accurated because of increased sugar intake). Is there anything else to it besides cholesterol ? Still researching about it..

I know the bad oils are the seed oils which cause inflammation (excessive Omega 6) such as vegetable, canola, sunflower etc.

That leaves Olive, Coconut, or butter as popular oils left on the market shelves.

        • +1

It stays as an oil at room temperature in tropical areas :)

        • +2

Studies show that trans fats lead to insulin resistance, inflammation, belly fat accumulation and drastically raise the risk of heart disease (53, 54, 55, 56). So eat your saturated fats, monounsaturated fats and Omega-3s… but avoid trans fats and processed vegetable oils like the plague

          trans fats vs saturated fats

      • Can I scull this?

  • Good find OP. Thanks.

Scientifically proven to be one of the least healthy things to cook with. Look it up.

    • +18

FYI scientists don't say things like "Scientifically proven". Whenever I see that statement I'm immediately very sceptical.

A scientist would say something like "there is evidence for".

Harvard Nutrition has a pretty balanced article about coconut oil: https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/food-features/c…

      • -6

The flavour is nice but it's no health food. Did you read your source? "The AHA advised against the use of coconut oil, and suggested limiting all saturated fat."

        • +10

          Did you read your source?

Did you read my comment? I didn't make any statement about whether I agree or disagree. In fact, I agree it's not a health food.

          • +3

@jazoom: Fair enough. I assumed you were countering the point since it was about
health benefits, not because of the phrasing.
You're right, it's important to be a good sceptic, although I think they may have been using "scientifically proven" sarcastically here.

            • +1

@Phulaphect: I like to encourage balanced debate and an open mind no matter which side of the argument I sit on. This is especially true in areas of such disagreement among experts, such as with nutrition.

            • +1

@Phulaphect: OMG, did someone on OzB just stand corrected without going to an all out debate because their ego wouldn't stand down? Kudos to you Sir/Madam.

a blogger has written about coconut oil back in 2012. read it here

        http://ajitvadakayil.blogspot.com/2012/08/coconut-oil-is-goo…

    • Funny enough, the most recent study I saw actually had it perform better than olive oil. They concluded 'not all saturated fats are the same' and pushed for more research.

    • Commenting on ozbargain is like fishing. You never know what you're gonna bring up, but it's guaranteed to make you laugh.

  • "+" for the comment!

  • +9

Wow, a down-vote and a few comments that this isn't healthy.

I'll remember that whenever there is a deal posted for anything containing sugar, fast food (McD, HJ, KFC, etc.), for alcohol, etc.
There are lots of things that are not good for us in excess. But that shouldn't stop us living a little, in moderation. And getting this as a bargain is a good posting.

    • I don't think the problem is that it's unhealthy, the problem is that it is being marketed as healthy which is misleading. It would also be a bad deal if someone suggested bigmacs as a health food. People can make the choices they want, but they should be informed choices.

      • +3

Has it been marketed as healthy?:
Product Details (from the Woolies site)
        - Made from fresh white coconut flesh - no coconut pairing used
        - Raw and cold pressed
        - No artificial colours, flavours, preservatives or chemicals
        - Contains lauric acid - antibacterial and antiviral properties
        - Ideal for cooking and baking. Use in desserts & smoothies
        - Can be used as a topical oil for skin and hair care

      • +1

"People can make the choices they want, but they should be informed choices"
The topic of what is or is not healthy is such a minefield, camouflaged by the financial greedy, who have no interest in us other than stripping you of your hard earned $.
I ask, why are our hospitals overcrowded, why is obesity, diabetes, heart disease, alzheimer's a major western worldwide problem.
Have we been miss led for the last 30 - 40 years.
        Informed choices, believe WHO?
        imho

        • +4

Well, ppl haven't been using coconut oil to cook with for 30-40 years on a mass scale, so it's not the reason hospitals are crowded.

          • +2

@slinkster: I'm pretty sure that coconut oil has been used for cooking purposes for a long time. Some references cite its use in North America in the 1940s, and it would surely have been used in those places where coconuts are grown.

          • @slinkster: In parts of the world, e.g. south India, coconut oil has been used for cooking for centuries. Human diet is surprisingly varied, and human health surprisingly adaptable to it.

    • "But that shouldn't stop us living a little, in moderation"
I dont believe coconut oil is a poison, although this product is not extra virgin.
The point is, a poison is still a poison in moderation or not.
      imho

      • Not sure how we jumped to poisons; is that in regard to my references to sugars and alcohol?

      • Unlike other oils such as olive oil, there is no such thing as 'extra virgin' coconut oil.

    • +1

I believe that is because it's being marketed as a health food, contrary to evidence. I don't think KFC will try to make quite the same claims about their (glorious) fried chicken. If people prefer coconut oil that's fine, but when most sales are due to conning people with "100% organic free-range gluten free elixir of life", people get understandably a little upset.

      • +2

See my above response to drillvoice.
I'm not sure that it has been marketed as a health food.

Is it true coconut oil can be used as lube? Asking for a friend.

  • +6

Great price! Thanks OP. This is great for my Keto diet…15kg lost and still going down, down, down!

  • +1

Technically a deal because it is a discounted price, but it's no healthy fat. Sure it might have a role in the kitchen but don't think it's going to be good for you. Extra virgin olive oil is where it's at.

    • +9

olive oil only if you are not heating or cooking food at very high temperatures. typical Indian style cooking needs coconut oil.

      • Olive oil is shit at high baking and drying temps it burns

  • +9

Well, I got on this 8 years ago. It's the only oil I use except for extra virgin olive oil for salads.

Prior to using it my inflammation levels were concerning, blood pressure a little high and cholesterol was still okay.

Almost a decade on this, cooking normally, no more inflammation markers, blood pressure is perfect and cholesterol on point.

So, if it was as bad as people say it is, I should be dead. But alas, blood results say otherwise.

    • +4

Nobody here cares for your evidence, they want to know who the Heart Foundation has sold a Tick to.

      • +1

Ah, so you surveyed everyone on OzBargain and got their opinion did you? Instead of generalisation, why not say, "I don't care for your evidence", and if you really didn't care, why bother replying? Looks like you're confused.

    • +3

I vouch for it! I was grown up at a place where we literally cook everything on coconut oil (long traditional of it) and no one had heart issues / bad cholesterol problems unless people started using so called healthy oils that were being promoted as part of propaganda.

And use it on face , hair and entire body as well, hehe !

      • +2

Yes, anti-viral and anti-fungal as well.
Last I understood, Alzheimer's was caused by a fungus of the gut & coconut oil was effective in at least delaying the full onset.
Trivia: Ever had brain freeze while drinking a really cold drink like "frozen coke", well after a few months on coconut oil you won't experience brain freeze.

        • +1

RE Alzheimer's part of your comment, it is unfortunately not so clear-cuthttps://www.alzheimers.org.uk/about-dementia/treatments/alternative-therapies/coconut-oil-and-dementia
Summary: there is insufficient evidence to support the use of coconut oil and there is potential for harm due to increased cholesterol levels.

With respect to anti-viral/anti-fungal, do you mean in a lab, or in actual trials involving people? Unfortunately, the majority of the health claims being made here do not reflect results of quality studies involving people. Instead they use studies done at a microscopic level or theoretical level - and while those results might seem valid, they rarely translate to equivalent or meaningful results in quality trials involving people.

    • +1

It is, tried it with my bub, and worked a treat.

We make home made baby wipes out of it (typical ozbargainer not wanting to buy things). Small human never has nappy rash except for if we go away for a couple of days and use commercial wipes.

Possibly a correlation/causation thing going on, but seems to work. And I'll be stocking up on this special.

    great lubricant for sex

Its a great oil. Its good for Keto. Want to know what to avoid for heart health - sugars and carbohydrates. Like an earlier writer, unfortunately my blood tests dont suit sugar and vegetable oil ( so called ) manufacturers. Since eating high saturated fat everything, my blood results have improved ( I'm not even eligible for statins even if I wanted them ( which I don't ) under the Au health guidelines.
If you use canola etc oils I suggest that you look up documentaries on how the stuff is made. If you do I can assure you, you wont be buying that stuff again !!
( Oh yes, lost 30kgs on Keto as well…. )

    • +2

Also, canola and similar oils increase your omega 6 intake and put your ratio off.

I will order 10 of these, time to make those awesome bar soap. It work out 645g/jar in case someone wonder.
