    Edit: NINJA!!

    Edit 2: And durp @ us both… In the link; "Samsung 2TB F4EG HDD - SATA II 3.0Gbs, 32MB Cache, 3 Years Warranty, HD204UI"

Only a ninja can ninja another ninja.

And only a ginger can call another ginger a ginger..

FYI: MSY dropped the price of their Samsung F4's today as well, by $3 to $85. So this is still a pretty decent price.

May want to take a note of this review if wanting to use on WinXp.
    http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/pc-components/storag…

  • If I was planning on using this and an external HDD enclosure, would there be any benefit in going for this rather than a 2TB WD-My Book with USB3 from JB?

    • you don't have to put up with the annoying smartware if you put it in your own enclosure

      • Those things are easily gotten rid of, just format the drive when you first bought it.

        • Formatting doesn't remove it, but it is possible to hide it so you don't see it. It just ends taking up a few mb.

      • With the My Book Essentials drives the software is just a file on the drive that you can delete. They got rid of the version you can't delete.

    • A separate enclosure is less constricting in terms of the options available to you if the power supply dies, some part of the enclosure breaks/fails (e.g. connector or PCB), or you have another bare 2.5"/3.5" drive that you want to access but only have a laptop and the external drive on hand.

Preassembled externals from the big drive manufacturers can be a pain if something breaks because you have to wait for them to fix it or request permission to access the drive yourself without voiding the warranty, or if you simply want to swap the drive or enclosure for other reasons, you void the warranty and may run into issues such as proprietary connections and the enclosure being a pain to disassemble. The upside is it's sometimes cheaper than buying separately, and the warranty on the enclosure is usually 3-5 years (empty enclosures from Vantec etc. usually have a 1 year warranty only).

why would I bother ordering online

      • you won't have to wait a hour to get served
      • you won't turn up to find out it's out of stock
      • +3

        amen brother!

I think I'm delusional. I thought for a moment that I saw multiple positives next to jv's name.

      • I work next door to msy in mitcham, there are barely any long queue anymore for my last few visits, same for box hill. Looks like they are losing business

        • +1

          same for box hill

Well, I'd imagine so, considering they closed Box Hill. =]

But yes, Mitcham is usually pretty quiet. I think moving from Box Hill to Mitcham has possibly split the customers. People who used to go to Box Hill will find Malvern or Clayton closer now potentially.

        • Didn't a DIY PC (or is it PC DIY) open up a couple of doors down from the MSY in Box Hill? They were just as competitive, from what I saw. That would halve MSYs business in Box Hill I imagine.

        • PC DIY : http://www.pcdiy.com.au/

Website used to be OK, but it's been 'under construction' for at least a couple of months.. Bought a couple of items from them and their prices used to be close enough to MSY to make the choice based on queue length more important.

why would I bother ordering online

      • Free shipping
      • $2.05 cheaper
      • +3

and you can buy other items and they will also include free shipping…

      • and MSY doesnt price-match.

Because MSY might be an hour drive away?

You had to ruin the pattern of single replies to one post didn't you? THIS is why we can't have nice things.

        • Yeah well, his 'nice thing' was way too big.

          Wait, what?

          fair call, i forgot a zero :).

You may well need to do this firmware check/upgrade for this drive.

    http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/faqView.do?b2b_bb…

"It can make the loss of written data."

    • Thanks to Samsung's genius engineers, there is actually no way to check if you have the current firmware vs the one you linked to, so the safest thing to do is flash the drive before you actually do anything with it….

    • +1

NO, NO, NO! I was just waiting for someone to post this. Drives manufactured after Dec 2010 do NOT require firmware upgrade! i have confirmed this myself with Samsung. The only reason people still think they need to upgrade is a, samsung have not made it clear enough that recent drves do not require firmware upgrade and b, the firmware number is the same for the old and new, thus confusing people some more.

    • Yeah… I had my concerns based on this, thought too long about it and missed the deal. Oh well, 2TB is a lot of stuff to put on a maybe not so awesome drive.
Looking forward to hearing how some of you peeps who snapped them up go, cause if there are no problems I'll get a pair next time they come up!

Slightly off-topic, how do these go compared performance wise to green/eco drives from Seagate and WD? Better? But perhaps not so reliable…??

  • +1

If anyone else wants to use this drive in XP you will need to create an aligned partition before hand to get the best performance out of it.

This thread has the GParted link (aligned partition)

  • Wanted two, but I think I got the last one…

Do you plan on getting more?

  • Just went through checkout, and its not coming up with free shipping… still adding $12 to my Total. Has the free shipping deal finished?

  • i will caution others to reconsider before picking up a SAMSUNG HD, just because it is cheap does not mean its a good investment to put all your data on … everyone has a diffferent expereicne maybe mine was just a bad luck but do ur research guys

    • Hard drives are so cheap now there's really no excuse not to use RAID 1 (mirror) if you have something important to store. Hard drive failures have become a minor inconvenience instead of a major headache (or heartache) now. Backups are still required in case the building burns down, PC gets stolen or a file is accidently overwritten.

    • I've used many, many Samsung drives at work.. I've got 2 different sizes in my desktop and 2 of these drives in my NAS. Never had any issues with a Samsung drive touch wood - yet!! :P

Besides, these aren't much cheaper than any other 2TB. Hitachi, Seagate & WD are all around the high-80's.

  • what is the speed of this drive?

    • 5400

    • at 88mph it's 1.21GW.

      • Damn, I don't have a clock tower to power it up then! ;)

  • I don't like the products of Samsung. I think their quality is not very good.

    • +2

I just checked with a Samsung rep and she said the same thing about you.

      Just kidding.

But I think your comment would be much more helpful if you could provide an example of (or experience with) a Samsung product you've not enjoyed.

For instance I have a Samy 50" 3D Plasma TV, 3D BluRay player, and Story 2Tb HDD and they have all consistently kicked @ss.

      To use a technical term.
