  • Any good b450 motherboard to pair with that?
    Cheers

    • I bought Gigabyte AMD B450M-DS3H for $108.80 from ebay sale, code PLAN20

just remember that most b450 motherboards need a bios update to use 3rd gen ryzen cpu's…

        • Yeah, though you can request seller to do the update for you. Most of the time they have to, given otherwise it wont work with these CPUs and they cant sell that and not expect refunds. Not everyone has a spare cpu lying around.

          • @parallelparadox: They might not do a BIOS upgrade for free. I bought a CPU and a motherboard from the same retailer, yet the retailer wanted to charge me to do the BIOS upgrade and the retailer cannot do the upgrade on the spot (so need to pick up motherboard again later).

@netsurfer: Then that is a lost sale for them. If my Retailer wanted to charge me for that, they can lose out a $600 sales over another $5.

@parallelparadox: $5? Which store would do it for $5? Let me know please. I was quoted $20 from one store and $40 from another store.

Frankly, the store didn't give a damn about losing my sale. The guy in front of me bought $3000+ worth of computer parts. P.S. it is only $450 if it is Ryzen 3600. The boss probably wouldn't be happy losing the sale, but to those people in the store, it's annoying to get that $20 for the store / boss.

        • Confirmed by Futu it has latest Bios!
Build is complete and working fine. Made a video too

I'm getting the MSI B450M Mortar Max, for $149.

I was previously looking at the Mortar Titanium for $140, thinking I can easily flash the new BIOS for AMD 3000 series, seeing as the board has flashback+. But then I read that it's advisable to get a "Max" MSI B450M motherboard, as it has a 32mb Bios chip instead of 16mb on the non Max versions.
There was also some issues with the new BIOS updates not supporting some games or something, or some issues.
Decided to get the Max for future proofing too.

    • MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX

Some good reviews regarding performance and compatability. Around $175+ you can find them for

      • Honestly, I am not so sure about the Max boards. The original intention is to address the BIOS size issue, but given that this is MSI, they again lag in BIOS update. Other than the GUI interface, the max version does not provide any additional benefit. The ABB firmware is still on beta, which is the same as non-max. That's really below par as other makers are already releasing ABBA.

Also, with Gigabyte and Asus, you can technically use PCI gen 4 on quite a number of their B450 boards (though you need to use older firmware), MSI never allowed this.

        • I built a PC on the weekend with a Tomahawk Max. Worked wonders, slotted the 3600 straight in, accepted my 3200 RAM which was not "AMD SPECIFIC" and loaded it at 3200 without any problems.

          I would buy again.

          • @Fergy1987: You need a firmware update to run certain linux releases (due to the AMD RDRAND bug). Currently, only beta version of the BIOS is available. Compared to boards from other makers, where they are already addressing the latest AMD CPU not boosting to the full specs issue.

Yes, it is one of the two B450 MBs where you don't have to do a BIOS upgrade in order to use Ryzen 3xxx series CPU. It is also one of the more expensive B450 boards. I also wondered whether the latest non-beta version has the same bug like other MSI B450 boards (you cannot set memory sub timings - you can only set the 4 main timings - looks like MSI BIOS has gone backwards again). Clearly MSI B450 boards had some issues as MSI had to work on addressing those before working on ABB update. With ABB update still on beta, it will be yet another long wait for ABBA to arrive on MSI B450 boards. Also, it's not that MSI is spending time to iron out BIOS bugs, the latest non-beta version is pretty buggy, after spending 1 week beta testing.

The whole point of Max is better BIOS, but so far, Max version offers zero advantage in terms of getting earlier BIOS access.

  • Reckon which ram would be better with the Ryzen3600?
    3000 CL15 or 3200 CL16? Thx

    • +1

Based on the CPU and RAM selection you specified, the difference is very minor and I doubt you have a RTX 2080 or 2080Ti with a gaming monitor. Just get the cheaper one if you don't really care about overclocking RAM.

  • Looks like it's out of stock now.
