This is not the large size X10, this is the "Mini" version by the way.

Might want to edit title and description.

    • Thanks updated.

  • Yeah, there's three versions:

    Xperia X10
    Xperia X10 Mini
Xperia X10 Mini Pro (Which is this one)

Aside from that, it's a great little phone and for $99, great price! Shame about the Telstra part though ;)

    • +2

IMHO the Telstra parts a plus…I'd personally prefer them to Voda or Optus. They have some good prepaid plans too.

      • +1

Great network, not so great price. You get what you pay for anyway. :) Excellent network will demand a premium.

  • +7

i was all holy shit and then i saw locked to telstra

    • +2

i was all that when i saw 3.5 hr talk time!

  • no froyo :(

    • +3

Why would you be lusting over froyo? Gingerbread!

      • +1

True, but seeing its Sony, it will be an achievement just to jump to froyo from eclair.

        • +1

Sony has said it will be releasing Gingerbread for the X10 series in Mid august. Depending on the network testing time, you might have 2.3 by years end

        • +1

          x10 series or x10 only?
I thought x10 only, being the only phone in the x10 series with a 1GHz processor…

        • X10 is the one they released in the press but have read on whirlpool that someone called SE and they said they would have it for the mini/pro as well.

Personally I'll wait it out or get custom rom since I hate timescape

  • any way to unlock this to use with optus?

    • Remember T-touch was also locked with Telstra. just doing some research on this :-)

    • Why would you want to?
It's a Telstra specific model… as soon as you leave the metro are it'll be useful for calls only.

      • Can still use data on the 2G frequencies. Slower of course.

        • yeah, but Optus have a great range of android handsets including a few at this pricepoint. Why buy something that you know is going to bye gimped by the network you choose to run it on?

        • That is true. Though some people rarely venture outside the city and those who prefer hardware keyboard may find this phone suits them at this price point (from pictures the keyboard looks quite usable although I have never physically tried it). But yes, I wouldn't buy it myself if I was on Optus network. At $99 I would get the new Huawei X1 from Optus store.

My original point was that you can use this phone outside the metro areas other than for just calls if you are in an Optus GSM coverage area and have an Optus SIM (that is if you can unlock the phone).

  • Android is fantastic…so easy to unlock, oops, I mean customise. ;)

    • How do you unlock android phones? I thought Flashing the rom did not unlock the phones?

  • How would this compare to the HTC Dream/G1 (the first Android phone)? Screen smaller?

    • Screen is much smaller - 240 x 320 so a few apps won't run on it, and the screen real estate is quite limited. For example if you pull up the on screen keyboard, you'll basically see 1 line of the input box and the rest of the screen is the keyboard.

Also, it comes with Android 1.6 which is quite old now and you'll miss some functionality that the newer versions have. (Not sure how far you can update it to)

Apart from that it's a really compact, useful phone, especially for the physical keyboard. Very handy to just keep in your pocket and pull out and quickly tap out a text message

      • i believe update is capped at 2.1 eclair

      • Thanks. Might just wait for the next iphone then. Was considering this for a cheap short term replacement of my wife's crappy HTC Dream (that doesn't ring when I call)

        • +3

Did you ever consider that your wife may have made this convenient alteration herself :P

        • Of course, that's naturally the first thing to suspect. But seriously, her phone is screwed.

      • the mini pro if this is indeed the pro version has a hardware keyboard, so less to worry about with the screen size…

  • The online code providers seem to want around the $30.00, I haven't got the tool to unlock Sony Ericsson but from memory even after you buy the tool you have to buy credits/logs to unlock the phones, so this won't be a cheap unlock. Hopefully someone finds a Free one.

    Good Price OP

    • Just talked to Telstra. Guess what? unlock code for this is provided free of cost. very happy using unlocked phone with Gingerbread installed on it.

      • Thanks savara. My daughter is very happy with her new 'unlocked' phone. Now it would be fantastic if you could show us steps to upgrade the OS to Gingerbread. :)

  • Will it support Optus 3G (900 MHz)?

    • I doubt it, likely to be 850…

      • General

        2G Network

        GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900

        3G Network

        HSDPA 900 / 2100

        HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100

  • http://www.mobileunlockstore.com/ says its $7 to unlock.. would it work?

    • The lack of a dropdown to choose phone model is slightly disturbing.

    • Has anyone used this store for unlocking?

      • +1

Telstra gave the code for Free :-)

        • thanks :)

    • Just talked to Telstra. Guess what? unlock code for this is provided free of cost. very happy using unlocked phone with Gingerbread installed on it.

  • which jb? not in the online catalogue

    • deal is mentioned on the last page of today's Mx in Sydney. Checked & confirmed the deal @ JB hi-fi in westfield Parramatta NSW

  • Has anybody had any experience with this phone? I'm tempted after using android on the MyTab I want to upgrade my e72

    Is the screen multitouch?

    • -3

      yes

      • +1

        No it's not.

        • I'm not 100% sure that it doesn't have multitouch.. the x10 (big one) has multitouch despite not being on Froyo..

        • but they haven't properly released multitouch
it's more like dual touch rather than multitouch ie only pinchzoom works but not three finger dragging etc

  • Looks interesting, one thing to note is that in any Android version <2.2 you are restricted to installing apps on internal memory (unless you root and install apps like a2sd). According to users this means the 128Mb internal memory makes the phone almost unusable.

However found the following quote from google-ing

    Down in the comments
    http://androidcommunity.com/no-android-updates-for-sony-eric…
"…Sony has reconsidered its stance and said it will upgrade the Xperia X10 to Android 2.3. According to a company blog posted in late March, Android 2.3" Though this may be limited to some networks/phones.

Any hints/ideas for which stores this deal is at?

    • i think there's an app for app to sd

      • no apps for app2sd are compatible with the mini pro, unless someone can prove to me otherwise.

love this phone to bits but the memory thing is annoying!!!

also, words with friends is also incompatible with this phone :(

        • You need to get the phone upgraded to Android 2.2 for App2SD, it's not too hard to do for somebody good with computers.

        • @Tetsuo. Hmm, guessing this doesn't come through the usual update channel then? I'm on 2.1 and haven't had any thing pop up to update! I will look into it…do you have any good blog links with instructions? :)

        • +3

Last night I updated my mini Pro to Gingerbread. now it is very fast & no bloatware. it was technical but not that diffcult. Will try to put the instructions soon & share the link.

  • crap phone , but considering the price , its a good deal.

    • It's far from crap, it's the best Android phone under $200. Perfect as a second phone if you already have a HTC Desire ;)

  • +16

these are not the droids you are looking for

    • LOL

    • Absolute GOLD!

    • yeah, I think 'mini' is Sony Ericsson's way of saying 'practically useless'

  • does it come with a prepaid SIM? any calls/data included?

    • Yes it comes with Telstra sim, credit is for 14 days. may be $10.

  • My phone is X8. Very nice, I think.

I can bet with you this is a spam account building up its street cred.

      • surely you jest!

        With comments like these

"Very cheap! Has anyone bought one? It seems to be too cheap."
        "Thanks."
        "It looks very nice. Thanks."

        who could doubt their integrity?

  • Picked up one from Jb HiFi West Lakes last night, they had 16 in stock, been playing with it today, VERY impressed, super fast for a 600mhz phone, just learning how to unlock it from Telstra now :)

    • Hi mate, any luck in finding cheap unlock for this phone? I went to a mobile repair place at the shopping center and they said it will cost $79. Please post if you could find something better.

      • Just talked to Telstra. Guess what? unlock code for this is provided free of cost. very happy using unlocked phone with Gingerbread installed on it.

        • WEll, its definitely not fee, i have just got off the phone, and they have quoted me $100 for it!!!

      • +2

try 1300720179 number, provide your IMEI number. they will come back and tell you that it is free to unlock.

        • Thanks it works!!!

        • I Just bought one today. To unlock it from Telstra, should I say some specific reason or do they unlock it straightaway when I give the IMEI no?

        • I just called that number and the woman who picked up asked for $100. What is this even I don't.

EDIT: I just called them up again, got a different person and they gave me the code for free.

  • how is the camera on this phone, tempted to get one to replace my dino K810

    • I assume it's pretty good, most SonyE phone's have good cameras, cause Sony make stand alone digital cameras.

I saw this deal in the paper, awesome price (if you're happy with Telstra). The specs on this phone are fantstic, for a $99 smart phone. Wifi, GPS, 5mp cam, qwerty keyboard, android. Nice little package.

  • does anyone know when the deal ends?

    • Till the stock ends :-)

  • Hi savara, how do you find Gingerbread on the X10 mini pro? Does it add multi-touch and flash capability as well as the ability to install apps onto the memory card? Can you share the download links and the steps of updating to Gingerbread. Thanks

    • Hi Max,

Gingerbread is thrugh a custm rom, & yes multitouch, flash ans app2sd is supported. I will share the link soon.

      • Great waiting on your reply!
