Chocolate and Mint Ice-Cream recommendations

Good evening fellow ozbargainers,

My kids and I are on a quest to find the best a nice choc and mint ice-cream. We've tried the Connoisseur mint with cookies one and the magnum peppermint one and found both pretty meh :( What is your favourite choc mint ice-cream? Is there such a thing as a yummy chocalatey-minty cold treat?

Cheers,
JJB and the Jedi-In-Training

Bulla. Love it. Nice and creamy.

    • Was going to say Bulla too.

I find their range better than the more expensive brands, especially the cookies and cream one.

    • Cheers! Will it a go this weekend.

    • This ^ its my go to for mint icecream :D

      • +1

Mmmmm, Bulla choc mint, the best. And weirdly, gluten free. Which helps since my brothers wife can't eat gluten, so it works when the family is together.

    • +1

My kids love the bulla one too. I think they also like mint ice cream because I hate it so much that I won't ever get desperate enough to eat it.But seriously who are these sickos who like mint. Mint only belongs in mojitos and in a sauce for lamb.

  • +1

Personally I love the Connoisseur (chocolate flavour) more - there seems to be more cookies/chocolate in the tub and the texture when slightly melted is amazing.
Had both Connoisseur and Bulla in the mint-choc-chip flavour, but I would definitely say that Bulla is my favourite

    • +1

Connoisseur's cookies and cream is our go-to mainly because it's the missus's favorite. We thought we'd try something different while she's away for work.

  • +2

Cold Rock Mint with some chocolate Mix ins.

    • Their mint slice madness cake looks amazing!

    • Have you had it? Did you like it?

      • +2

This ones pretty good, easily demolish a tub in one sitting.

      • +1

One of the best you can get out there, just look for a tub with less chocolate…

      • +1

Ive had it. Im not generally a Mint Ice cream person but this was awesome (and yes the tub can easily be demolished in one sitting).

    • +1

Agreed - about the best Mint/Choc ice cream I have ever had.

    • +12

?? I can't help it if my kids like ice-cream? My wife's away, so it's just the 4 of us on this ice-cream quest.

If it bothers you so much, feel free to block my posts.

Don’t listen to the nay sayers. I bet you are all having a whale of a time. Introducing whimsy, and making them feel they are part of the decision process, is good for kids. I suggest getting a few brands from the supermarket and having a blind taste off. They aren’t allowed to see the packaging, just ice cream in the bowl. (But not too much at once) Then everyone votes. The problem is finding the Goldilocks moment, not too bland and not too strong. Maybe you could get some good vanilla ice cream and make your own with aero bars etc. have a fun time.

          • @Quantumcat: I meant introducing the children to whimsy. It isn’t all about seriousness, giving them the chance to explore nonsense is important. I don’t think jar jar thinks his kids are decoration, he seems to be, genuinely, trying to connect with them

              • +1

@Quantumcat: Don’t know about creating the accounts, you would need to give us examples; but plenty of people talk about their kids online. This is an anonymous forum and there is nothing that identifies who they are; unlike Facebook, Snapchat, etc where people plaster their kids pictures everywhere. People here say things about their partners, kids, coworkers, etc that are a lot worse than what jar jar is doing; not sure why you are having conniptions here? The post is pretty gentle fun. He isn’t asking what dog cage he should keep them in, just about ice-cream types. I think we all like to score internet points. If I make an online joke I do get chuffed if people up vote it. One of my posts was what useless things do you have in your kitchen and, given the responses, we all had a good time. I think there are much more worrying posts on this forum. However, if we get proof jar jar is mistreating his kids i’ll meet you at the barricade with the flaming torch.

                @Quantumcat:

make new accounts pretending to be them

WTH? If you truly believe that :

Reporting your suspicions is a good idea but as moderators have a multitude of sockpuppeting detection tools, it's best to leave the investigation to them rather than making public accusations. Please submit issues by either reporting the suspicious post/comment) or by starting a topic in the Talk With A Moderator (TWAM) forum.

As for everything else, you're overthinking it. I'm not too sure why and what that says about you.

like imagine someone asking about adult nappies and hammering home the fact that they had an elderly aunt living with them and they totally weren't into baby fetishes or anything

That is a disturbing image. Made more so by the way you were triggered by the innocent mention of kids in this post.Is there anything you would like to tell us, Ms Quantumcat?

                • @[Deactivated]: I think Quantumcat may have thrown a metaphoric horse shoe here. I think we will back out of the room and not make eye contact. The comment is totally over the top based on your posts. I think ignoring and hope they have time to reflect on what they are posting comes to mind. When I read the post you answered to I missed the middle bit, the analogy is deeply disturbing and inappropriate.

                  • @try2bhelpful: *backing out of the room , not making eye contact…

                    :)

                • +2

@[Deactivated]: Cats live in own World. Quantum State not fully understood. Catnip over mint.
                  Can sudden scratch.

              • @Quantumcat: This is a frighteningly disproportionate reaction to the original post. The amount that you've inferred here makes me concerned for where you're at right now.

                • -1

@MessyG: If you have a look at his posts you will see other references, and you can try to find the new user which was supposedly one or both of the kids but the language sounded nothing like any teenager/older child I have ever met (and I see a lot of them, being staff on a gaming forum and a maths tutor). I'm nearly sure he made the account himself for whatever weird reason and the fact that it read nothing like a kid would write makes it look like he probably doesn't even have any kids. If that isn't creepy then what is?

                  • @Quantumcat: What is very creepy is coming up with an analogy of an elderly incontinent aunt and then hinting at baby fetishising with adult nappies, that is totally disproportionate. Jar jar binks postings are, generally, gentle and whimsical musings. I have no idea why you are so upset even if he is using “mythical” children in an engaging fashion; not that I think he is. There is nothing inappropriate in his postings, he is not trying to groom children into inappropriate contact. The subject is mint chocolate ice cream, I know - so controversial. Gaming forums and maths tutor - you have met a subset of children, and not all children.

Let’s be honest, most of us wouldn’t be here if we weren’t trying to socially connect. Many of us post deals, or forum topics, to interact and seek the approval of others.

@try2bhelpful: Why are you getting so worked up about it? I sense this is some sort of ring. Wouldn't be surprised given recent events.

                      • @nahi11: The ring went into the fires at Mount Doom. I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt you are, trying, to be ironic here.

                      • @nahi11:

Wouldn't be surprised given recent events.

What "recent events" ? Do tell?

                  • @Quantumcat:

you have a look at his posts you will see other references,

                    Other references to what?

You started out by saying that it was creepy that I talk about my kids and somehow reached the conclusion that I don't even have kids, all within 3 comments. How does that work?

If that isn't creepy then what is?

Your overreaction to a thread about ice-cream.

                    • @[Deactivated]: It would appear your kids are both alive and dead(imaginary) at the same time :).

                      • @try2bhelpful: Schrödinger's cat JJB's kids… :p

I really shouldn't joke about the existence of my kids - I wouldn't want to alarm QC any further. My kids are well, happy and full of beans and making the most of the school holidays :)

                        • @[Deactivated]: I was hesitant to make the joke myself. Hence the (imaginary) explanation. It was begging to be made though :). Have fun with the school holidays. Better you than me.

                  • +1

@Quantumcat: So because he posted a topic about him and his kids finding a good ice cream, you've gone back and combed over his other posts looking for evidence that he is pretending to be his own children and then decide they don't exist!? I'm having a pretty big WTAF moment right now, seriously what on earth is going on with you?

                    • @MessyG: Why are you three so insistent on harassing this user for expressing their own valid opinion on a topic that has been unforgivingly forced into secrecy. What is your agenda? I can't believe a woman would attack another over her concern.

                      • @nahi11: Seriously? I’m female as well. Quantum cat started the harassment of someone who was just talking about selecting ice creams for his children and then you tried to imply I was part of some dodgy ring. (Whatever the hell that was meant to mean). If you want to talk about attacks and harassment I would think both of you have gone completely over the top with no proof at all. What legitimate concerns has QC shown? Put forward some actual proof, including links, rather than oblique snide remarks. Have a look at QCs analogy, it made me feel pretty ill. Even if Jar Jar is looking for like clicks, it isn’t like he is shilling his children for cash. Also, there is no way of actually recognising them based on his posts. I love the fact that you two have gone on the attack, and made some pretty wild accusations, and now you are accusing us of harassment because we are asking for some proof of the accusations. I’ll put my feminist credentials up against either of you, so don’t try to pull the sisterhood card on me.

      what a shit comment

    • I don't think it's creepy until you are selling your kids on eBay in order to finance your
choc and mint ice cream habit.

      Then it's creepy.

      • Not really. It's common practice and much encouraged.

    • +6

No, YOU sound creepy posting something like this. The rest of us interpreted it as a parent trying to find a great ice cream for their kids.

    • I have had some that taste very bad, and some that are just a little bad tasting. I put Connoisseur in the latter category.

But trust me when I say that the Mint Ice Cream from Cold Rock is absolutely the best Ice Cream ever.

Give it a go, I promise it tastes nothing like a breath freshener.

    • I don't understand the downvotes. Also don't understand the lack of love for mints although the best mints are the chemist disc-shaped ones that knock your socks off. I'd choose those over a weaker mint ice cream anyday!

    • Why do you insist on using mint flavoured dental hygiene products?

It's been used in cooking much longer than toothpaste has been around.

  • +1

Go find one of those smaller cinemas and get a good choc top. Are you in Melbourne? The Nova in Carlton has an excellent range, so while I haven’t had their choc mint, the quality of the others suggests it would be fantastic.

    • Will do. Thanks:)

      • The Astor Cinema used to have the best Choc Tops, haven’t been for a while though.

  • +2

I really like the Wooolworths choc mint cones.
They're way better than you'd expect for the price. Some of the choc is even real milk chocolate.

    • What is the rest of it, if I dare ask?

      • Rat faeces.

Can you still buy Peppermint Crisp bars?

Idea just had, not new :(

Maybe try with regular ice-cream, first, to see if tastes nice.
    Not a breakfast food.

Don't feed any to the dog, clean your teeth after you finish, and don't swallow the toothpaste.. Jar Jar Binks

All of the above is accurate and can be seen as an excellent idea to go forth and purchase. Pro-tip: use cherry ripe as a spoon.

Talenti has some great flavours. I'm told that the mint is outstanding by someone who is particularly picky about mint flavours. I think their raspberry is in a class of it's own and the coconut is very good too.

Seems to be mainly stocked by independent stores.

It's not my most favourite flavour however I was impressed by Pana Organic Mint Choc Chip Dairy Free Ice Cream

  • +2

Just an idea: if you are looking to involve the kids in some activity - make the mint/choc ice-cream with them.

I used to make my own Creme de Menthe ice-cream - it was really delicious, very easy to make (did not involve ice-cream makers etc). Recipe was adapted from the Australian Heritage Cookbook.

For the kids, of course, you would use a non-alchoholic mint or creme-de-menthe syrup instead. Maybe an alchoholic batch for yourself? :-)

The original recipe was for Cointreau ice-cream, but I have used different types of liqueurs - and they all taste wonderful.

Let me know if you are interested, and I will give you the recipe. (You may not be looking to involve them to this level of activity, and that is understandable).
    Cheers.

Thank you. You're very kind:) We were given an ice-cream maker by a friend who hasn't used it in ages and my MIL has sent us a choc-mint recipe with at least 15 steps, including some possibly made up steps to get the not-quite-3 year old involved too. As we all know, the empty-bowl-carrying step and the naming-the-ice-cream step are by far the most crucial components in making the perfect ice-cream ;) I think we're all set.

You may not be looking to involve them to this level of activity, and that is understandable

We've taken it a step further and decided to grow our own mint, among other things. Today was spent working on our veggie patch :) Truth be told, the Bulla choc mint ice-cream does hit the spot after a hard afternoon's work clearing the backyard and building garden beds:) Cheers to all those who recommended it.

      • As we all know, the empty-bowl-carrying step and the naming-the-ice-cream step are by far the most crucial components in making the perfect ice-cream :p I think we're all set.

        LOL!

    • What's the recipe? sounds pretty good to me

      • Are Dark Chocolate Mint Thins an ingredient?

        • Well, pretty sure adding chopped up chocolate will work too - if wanting choc bits in it. But have not tried.

        Here is the recipe:

        Cointreau Ice Cream

        3 eggs separated
        ½ cup caster sugar
        2 tablespoon Cointreau
        2 tablespoons water
        1 1/3 cups cream, whipped

        • Beat the egg yolks with the sugar, Cointreau and water in a double saucepan until light and fluffy. Cool.
        • Beat the egg whites until stiff, fold into the Cointreau mixture with the cream and pour into a 20cm (8”) square cake tin.
        • Place in the freezer and freeze until partially set, then break up the mixture gently with a fork.
        • Re-freeze in the tin until set.

        Credit: The Australian Heritage Cookbook

        What I found:

        • Initially, I used the full thickened cream, found it too heavy, and substituted with the Light Thickened Cream, which tasted better. Also, since they come in 300ml, just use this, instead of the 1 1/3 cups of cream.
        • The recipe calls for breaking up mixture once, but I usually do this 2 or more times (just to check on the progress and do tasting, being impatient!). This seems fine; might even make it smoother.

        • Can substitute with other liqueurs too, like Kahlua/Tia Maria and Grand Marnier. Creme de Menthe (Mint) is a good one, or add Creme de Cacao as well to get a grasshopper ice-cream. My next one to try is Midori, pretty sure it will taste good too.

        • Can you taste the alcohol? I want something where you really can't taste it, which of the liqueurs would be best?

          • +1

@TEER3X: The Creme de Menthe version is quite mild in terms of alcohol. Creme de Menthe liqueurs are usually 20-25% alcohol, and it is only 2 tablespoons (40mls) in the batch. If you like, try with a mix of liqueur and syrup to decrease it further? Kahlua too is not too strong (26.5% alcohol volume).

In terms of taste, the Cointreau/Grand Marnier is very mild/subtle, not bold like the Creme de Menthe or Kahlua. But alcohol-wise it is higher (40%).

Also, if you generally prefer non-alcoholic, just substitute with cocktail syrups, such as these.

            Enjoy!

        • +1

Just did a batch with Midori – and would not recommend using it. The melon taste is just too mild, over swamped by the cream taste. This, despite doubling the Midori before freezing.

Another thing I just remembered: if using coffee liqueurs, can substitute the 2 tablespoons of water with espresso for a stronger tasting ice-cream.

    • +1

I agree, you can buy peppermint oil and some vanilla ice cream and churn it all uptogether! That way you can control how minty is and add what you want.

  • +1

IIRC, Ben and jerrys have a mint chocolate chunk, but not sure if they sell them in tubs (might have to go to a store).

I prefer NZ dairy and tip top mint chocolate chip ranks number 1 for me (but haven't seen tip top anywhere in Australia). Some stores that stock kiwi foods might have much Moore's ice cream (They do a decentish mint choc chip).

  • Mint is dead easy to grow. Just grow some in a pot and use the fresh leaves with some chocolate ice cream. Nothing can compare to fresh mint.

    • +1

True. We did and then we adopted a rabbit and that was the end of the mint and everything else that was in our garden. We've built an enclosed veggie patch yesterday and have planted some herbs, spinach and silverbeets, as well as some Shasta daisies for my wife 🤞🏻

    • Sadly all my mint died last summer because they were in the ground and it was a very hot summer. I guess pot is the way to go.

      • Did you water them? We did and ours survived the Melbourne summer heat but sadly not the greedy little bunny.

        • No, I believe in tough love! If they don't survive by themselves, they have no place in my garden :-)

Joking aside, it would need a lot of water … and I kept thinking the reservoirs were/are low and water is such a precious commodity.

          • +2

@bluesky: The secret is to mulch your plants at least 4-6 inches deep :D then you only have to water once a month if it doesnt rain! And everything grows like crazy!!

            • @KangaBanga: Good advice. Thanks. This is what I will do next time :-). They seem so hardy, spreading & growing wild for years before that, I thought it would make it.

    • Buy the confectioners mint (also known as chocolate mint) and it's next level!

    • ehh, I've tried it twice and wouldnt recommend

I've made choc mint ice cream before, just using the basic ice cream recipe (cream sugar milk tiny bit of vanilla), added chopped up mint slice biscuits and then a tiny bit of mint essence and even some green food colouring for authenticity. Was delicious!
