EFTPOS Gift Card Convert into Cash or Pay Credit Card

Are there any way I can turn EFTPOS gift card into cash or pay credit card?
I can only think of getting a Davidjones Amex credit card and pay in person in Davidjones store, but this will incur a $95 annual fee.
Anyone knows other ways to do it? Thank you!

The only way to finish on top is to be the person who started the second hand gift card brokerage platform. Everyone else in this scenario is a loser…

Not necessarily. A person (Or company) can deliver a service and/or product which meets expectations and where the customer sees what they as paid as Good value for their money spent.
Many people seem to automatically assume that a bargain hunter, means to always cheap out. I don't mind paying for things (even if it is expensive) , if I feel it is worth it.
If they are charging too high a rate for the service, I don't see what is stopping someone else from coming in and joining the market offering a better rate.
Monopolies are never good for consumers though, I'm not sure if these guys have a monopoly or not.

So you want your EFTPOS gift card to be treated and valued like cash?

  • +3

I used to use the AusPost Load&Go card to transfer from an EFTPOS gift card to cash but they discontinued it this year. They replaced it with Australia Post Everyday Mastercard https://auspost.com.au/money-insurance/prepaid-cards/everyda…
You could probably give it a go with that one.

    • The Aus Post staff generally says no when they see eftpos cards (non bank issued) you may have luck at some of the post offices though. I was turned down at 3 different places when I tried to top up

      • +1

Their system can detect whether it is a top-up with prepaid EFTPOS card somehow, and then it will suspend your card.

      • Yeah I had that problem at a random AusPost I went to but my local always used to do it, no questions asked. I haven't tried for over a year so they might've cracked down on it.

        • Mine was suspended after 2 EFTPOS cards.

    • +1 that's what I did. Had to pay a small fee and the card has a short expiry but I was able to withdraw cash from an ATM.

  • +4

By something at kmart or the like and return it, very unlikely they will check the card you put it back onto matches the receipt

    • My Kmart absolutely check. I tried to return something my husband had bought and because it was a different card (same account but different cards) they would only offer me store credit. My local store may be more militant than others.

Use it for your normal spending.

Pay for groceries with EFTPOS gift card.

    • -6

Already using coles and woolies gift cards

      • +5

Then don’t use Coles and woollies and use the eftpos card. Or cop the loss. How much amount is it? When does it expire?
How about you answer these questions first.

      • EFTPOS cards are the best for Aldi – you will save on their surcharge :)

      • Use the EFTPOS card to buy Woolworths discounted e-Giftcards if it's a Mastercard/Visa.

Otherwise, add it to PayPal and use it on eBay to buy your own item using free listings (most new accounts will get this offer) and a sitewide discount to negate the PayPal fee.

Do you not buy groceries, fuel, takeaway, online shopping, public transport?

    • +2

OP has zero expenses. They want to invest in BTC.

      • +10

Then instead of using Amex, use the gift cards, or pay for your friends/family groceries in exchange for cash. No stranger is going to offer you 1:1 on your gift card, no incentive.

  • +3

    sounds dodgey. money laundering.

    • +1

      Related?

Money laundering is the illegal process of concealing the origins of money obtained illegally by passing it through a complex sequence of banking transfers or commercial transactions. The overall scheme of this process returns the money to the launderer in an obscure and indirect way.

David Jones won't let you use EFTPOS gift cards to pay off your DJs Amex, unless you get someone really dumb. They sent an internal comms about this about a year ago. Also, the annual fee is $99

    Source: ex-DJs staff

    • Oh, thx!

    • They sent an internal comms about this about a year ago

So someone who joined less than a year ago will do it?

      • Like I said, you'd need to have someone really dumb to get away with it (assuming they got trained properly), unless they've managed to program it so that all EFTPOS gift cards get declined when attempting to use them to pay off a DJs card. FWIW, the loophole was still working a year ago despite the internal comms.

  • Assuming this is actually a cashflow issue, and you want to access the value of a giftcard as cash to pay something else in a short time frame, I would say your best bet is to ask a few friends etc. if you can pay to fill their cars up/buy their groceries/pay a bill for them with your card in exchange for the cash.

    • best bet is to ask a few friends

Easier to sell on the forums for a 5-10% discount.

Thanks for the heads up. Just bought too much from recent deals

      • What deal? I don't recall seeing any eftpos deal recently.

It must be the WW deal few months ago and it is only in NSW.

        • It was WWS buy 10-2 every card everyday 2 months ago and ebay UK deals these days, stocked like more than $5000 cards haha

If you're in Sydney, get an opal card and top it up. Then cancel and ask for a cash refund which they can do I think via cheque sent back to u (or maybe they'll bank transfer)

Alternatively, ull lose some value but u can use your eftpos cards to buy visa giftcards at woolworths. It means you need to pay extra $6 for activation fee for each $100 giftcard

  • +11

Funny how op has answer for each suggestion but his own question…

  • Buy some thing with the eftpos, that you can sell straight away on eBay to return cash to you (maybe even some profit).
That's the simple way , that I would maybe try if I was in your situation.
Takes some, skills etc to understand what can easily be resold and for what price etc. Too much to go into.
But say, the high end headphones come up really cheap, then I have seen a few people post about flipping them on eBay.

You probably have to pay tax, if the eftpos card money, can be considered income. Not sure how much we are talking, if it is like $10,000, and you try to hide the income, you could be in alot of trouble later on when they catch you. I'm assuming it is over $1,000, otherwise why bother posting. Anything under $1,000 , could fairly easily be sold here, or other sites and groups.

    • But say, the high end headphones come up really cheap, then I have seen a few people post about flipping them on eBay.

The main roadblock with this approach is that EFTPOS cards need to be used in-store and finding an in-store deal on something you can flip can be time consuming/difficult. You'll also loose ~3% on paypal fees when you sell on ebay and another 10% FVF (unless you're targetted for a no FVF promotion). Pretty big hurdles to overcome, unless you really know what you're doing.

      • can be time consuming/difficult.

It is effort/work required. If you are not confident doing it yourself, sell the gift cards at a loss.. Simple.
There is not a magical way, that it will convert into cash, without effort/work.

You probably have spent more time on this thread, than it would take you to just flip something for money-back, or even profit

  • Get a revolut account and add money using the card.

    • Are there any fees for depositing using a gift card and withdrawing to a bank account with revolut?

    • +1

      Can't use EFTPOS for revolut

Getting cash out at the self serve checkout at the supermarket worked for me with a $50 EFTPOS gift card I won in a competition on the OzBargain Competitions page once.

You could also try making two Beem It accounts and sending money from the EFTPOS gift card to your bank-issued EFTPOS card. I'm not sure whether or not it checks whether a card is a gift card. They allow up to $1000 transfers per day and don't charge any fees.

    • Is there a limit to the amount you can cash out?

    • How can you use EFTPOS gift card with Beem It? You only can add MC/Visa debit cards to Beem It.

      • My mistake. Go with the self serve checkout option in that case.

What brand of card was it? Cash out is typically blocked by most prepaid cards.

  • +2

Can try 7-11 Just Go prepaid card.
    https://www.7elevenjustgo.com.au/

The staff may refuse your top-up with anything other than cash… but I highly doubt that 7-11 staffs are well trained on this product.

OP seems to be a weirdo. Just use the bloody EFTPOS giftcard to pay for normal everyday spend. Is it a 10K gift card or what?

    • +10

No, OP is just someone looking for others to tell him how to do "manufactured spending" . He just repeatedly wants to buy Eftpos cards with his Amex and cash them out to get "free" Amex points. This is why the obvious answers are not what he is seeking, so stop wasting your time.

      • He just repeatedly wants to buy Eftpos cards with his Amex and cash them out to get "free" Amex points

How do you buy EFTPOS cards at face value or below (apart from the woolworths deal)? The start up fee on most cards kind of kills the benefit. Even if you can cash the cards out at face value, it ends up being a pretty skinny deal. You can squeeze a few extra bucks by parking the cash in an offset account, but the volumes to make it worthwhile just don't seem to be there.

        • +1

Totally agree on the value front. Now that Amex has halved the redemption rates, it's not worth it.

        • +1

During Chinese New Year, they had a special promotion for a special gift card with no fees and if you had access to a staff card you can get it at 5% off. So you could have bought an $88 gift card for $83.60

          • @highdealer: That's the same as "woolworths deal" … but I didn't consider the staff discount, that could push it back into profitable territory, if you have access and are willing to abuse it!

  • +4

I will offer you 2x the rate of the gift card. Please send the card first and I will pay via PP FF upon receipt.

  • +1

I find the most useful way of using them is places that don't accept AMEX - rego and council rates are the top, big ticket spends which can be used at a post office. Find a self-serve kiosk if the staff at the counter are not letting you use the EFTPOS gift cards. Other bills can be managed with PostBillPay and Paypal linked to AMEX. The rest would be regular spending at restaurants/shops etc that don't accept AMEX.

  • +4

Next time you're at the GP, pay the full amount up front, then claim medicare manually via the mygov website.
Also a great way to earn points if your GP doesn't surcharge amex.

    • +3

My GP charges me full freight upfront, but has my Medicare deets on file … the rebate just turns up in my bank account overnight.

    • +3

Same goes for Dentists/Physiotherapists/Optometrists, etc - pay with your EFTPOS card and submit a manual claim to your private health insurer, instead of using hipcaps.

You can apply a similar strategy to the Child Care Subsidy - overestimate your income, so you don't qualify and have to pay the upfront costs and then you'll get a after you've done your taxes.

      • This is the most helpful reply, intelligent answer /thumbsup

  • +3

Use it to pay council rates. You will have to pay at your local council though. It may depend on whether you do pay council rates.

I've done this a few times when I had some to spend.

    • Top marks . Checked my rates notice and in person you can .

Only problem all of the buggers including OP beat me to them .

  • I got a credit card terminal for my business and I cop 2% hit for the first $1500 and 1.5% thereafter.

    • Be warned that credit card companies (I'm looking at you AMEX) will suspend your card if they notice you sending money to yourself. So if your EFTPOS machine is set up in your own name, or your PayPal account then you'll get flagged for financial review.

Not a problem for OP, but if you ever think of testing it with your own card, well…

      • Banks will also suspended or cancel your EFTPOS machine as it's against the policy for using one.
