For those who can't/won't wait for stock to be replenished (if it ever does come back at the same price), you could always try price matching. I'm sure some stores will do it ;)

  • +3

Its a fantastic deal… apart from the fact that right now, it doesn't actually exist.

  • It sucks that it sold out so quick :( However, at least people have a price match to work off of if they can't wait for new stock of the cosmic blue 3DS.

    • price matches are only valid for items in stock.

  • pricing error i reckon..

  • +11

I can't see myself paying over $150 for one of these.

I'm a huge Nintendo fan, but I'm still getting mileage out of my DS and don't see what's so special about the 3DS yet.

    • +2

      hear, hear

    • +4

      OoT.

      • +1

I have this on the 64.

I know it's an updated version and there are new quests and what not, but it's not really a system seller for me personally. I'll definitely buy it when I do get a 3DS, though.

    • +6

Yeah, because its not like the original DS and the Wii sold well.

        • +8

Hardly. The Wii has been firmly aimed at casual gamers, and they've gotten a lot of mileage out of the exercise games as well. Good on them for not just going after the special forces wannabe's with their consoles.

        • +3

Profit is profit. It doesn't matter who you get it from. And how has the industry changed beyond their grasp? If anything, it's Nintendo that has changed the gaming industry.

        • Yep, the wii was aimed at casual gaming and it's been a huge success. Everyone I know that has one playing it very casually/occasionally/rarely.

        • +3

"the industry has changed beyond their grasp"

Yeah. Because Kinect/Move were tooottaaally not in response to the Wii's runaway success.

        • +3

"nobody i know with move/kinect find it worthwhile"
"they've only tacked on an extra gimmick that no-one can stand for more than 5 minutes."
"Can't say their software is any better either."

You =/= the world. You and your friends' experiences are not representative of the whole, so don't attempt to pass it off as fact. It's extremely presumptuous.
-People buy Wii/Move/Kinect games, just look at sales charts.
-People can play the 3DS for more than 5 minutes without getting a headache.
-Not every child owns a $600+ iPad.

When will you people realise that Nintendo's not after your (core hardcore gaming demographic) money? And thus has no obligation to cater to your every whim? They'll do what they think is best and make a tonne of money doing so, just as the accessible Wii/DS trumped the more beefy and feature-packed PS3/PSP.

As for how the future of mobile gaming or home consoles will be, your guess is as good as mine. But as no-one else is admitting to owning a time machine, the least you could do is also refrain from pointless speculation.

        • +4

You're really not buying into this "facts first interpretation later" thing are you? Check out Nintendo's announcement of the Wii the year before it launched - they made it abundantly clear that they were attempting to appeal to people who would "not ordinarily think of themselves as gamers". Look at their launch advertising, their initial game lineup.

Seriously dude, just quite while you can. Every post you submit sinks you deeper in the pit of stubborn ignorance.

    • +7

wow, anyone that says the wii is a flop, is probably the same guy that assumes that people with the biggest abs gets the girls every time. You don't need grunt to have a good time, you need something that can offer you a fun experience.

The massive sales figures of the Wii, Kinect and ALL handheld consoles, demonstrate that the modern market favours casual gamers. In fact, the average gamer is aged 33 now. That actually surprised me given that I assumed that a lot of children are now playing casual and fun games. But you can't deny the facts :)

With the cost of going to the cinema booming, families are turning to casual interactive gaming for good times, not a $80 family trip to see a dodgy movie that will be forgotten the moment you get home. In saying that, it is proven that a fun game will always conquer a game with great graphics and narrative, or as you put it, 'grunt'.

I don't want to get into fine details because this is a bargain hunting site, not gamespot.com.au, but look no further than a simple graphic game featuring an Italian Plumber on a mission to save a Princess with a 'fruity' name and contrast it to a game with a hi-tech soldier, having a 'crisis' because his game wont run on 98% of home computers :)

but yeah…. I believe that Nintendo is in a great place because their brand and image favours fun, casual tones and family values. the grunty consoles try to keep up with Nintendo's innovations, I need say no more.

Btw, amazing find kyriacou48, I'm keeping my eyes peeled on this one (Y)

      • +4

But my partner loves my grunting!

    • Gamecube wasn't gimmicky (it was a pure gaming system) and it was more powerful than the PS2. Not sure where you're getting your facts but they're completely wrong.

      • -3

the gamecube wasn't gimmicky, but it was a failure to be sure

        • The Gamecube and Dreamcast were destined to 'fail' because the PS2 and PS1 already had a massive market share and games catalogue to begin with. Also, they had practical CDs to program the games on, so more games design companies chose to invest their games in the PS machines and their development kits.

Also, I think you are confusing innovation with the loose term of a 'gimmick'. You need something new to make people want to buy your product, it's important to remember that. I'm sure that analysts thought the PS1 was a gimmick in the industry, because it used CDs for their games, as opposed to cartridges. Turns out that innovation sped up the technological advances of consoles and won the 90s console war :)

Please dude, just use this site to find bargains and applaud the efforts of those who find them. I ordinarily wouldn't pick an argument on this site, but your lack of knowledge and indulgence in ignorance amazes me.

        • -3

you can say i have a 'lack of knowledge' as much as you want, but alas i am too aware the predicament Nintendo are in, and wishing it ain't so just isn't going to help. Truth is Nintendo are on borrowed time. I'm sure you are a big fan who doesn't want to see the demise of a once great and innovative company but its plain to see that Nintendo, as it stands, is not responding to the market in any way that will secure its future. Gaming now rests in the hands of Apple, Microsoft and Google.

    • Also the Gamecube was a solid console if you gave it a chance.

    • +4

3DS isn't a failure by any stretch of the friendship, it just doesn't have many 'wow' games yet. It sold 3.4 million units in the first month, even with its exorbitant price. Also, in it's first week of sales in North America, it posted 400k units sold, roughly the same as the NDS first week sales, that console has gone on to sell 140m+ units because of its massive catalogue of games for all audiences. The 3DS is currently number 1 in Japan btw, with PSP a close second.

'Mark my word', when Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Metroid and other portable classics reboot on this console, especially Mario and Pokemon, alongside a price reduction this Christmas, this console will be selling by the masses. Also, only God can predict how many millions the 2nd generation of the 3DS will sell. It will be amazing!

I don't mean to be rude, but I think you are touching on a topic you don't know much about and are simply assuming that Nintendo will flop because you like blockbuster games, as opposed to light and casual games.

      • He sounds bitter because he own a crappy wee wee. Nintendo started this whole motion control phase and now they are turning to 3D gaming. They might be more innovative but the other 2 players always come back with bigger, better and badder tech and software. If Nintendo didn't have the strong IP and brand establishments from its many endearing virtual characters then it would have died off many years ago. People still wanna pay money to see Zelda or Mario, even if it is derivative junk and milked to shreds.

      • -6

You do realise when the PSP vita is Released its Bye Bye 3ds?

        • +2

I see dozens of DSs being used on the train every day, but only see a PSP on rare occasions and always being used by male teenagers.

I don't think the DS/3DS are targeted directly at the same market as a PSP.

        • +4

Yeah cos that's exactly what happened last time with the PSP and DS right?

          Oh wait…

        • +2

Sorry but personally I think Nintendo's DS(tm) brandname is still more widely recognized than PSP(tm)… with that being said, it is unlikely Vita is going to change the statistics of 3DS anytime soon!

        • For me that is the case. I am more excited about a new version of everybodys golf than I am in ocarina of time. thats not sarcasm either. I own a 64 with around 70 games, and remakes of old games dont excite me (only exception is chrono trigger)

PS Vita will only beat Nintendo if it has a better catalogue of games, and by the launch titles of the vita compared to the launch titles of the 3ds, this looks to be the case.

demographics are different, eides is right. but if there is only $50 between the two consoles, I think the Vita will go better than the PSP.

Also.. the PSP by no means was a failure and still has a very strong market in asia.

        • Yes, in Asia. In the west it is dead and has been since last year after GOW, Kingdom Hearts and the last MHFU game were released. I'm a long time PSP fan, owned every model, many several times. The Go burned me though, I'll wait it out this time instead and see how the Vita does after a year or two. I might consider one then.

  • +1

Apparently bigw price matches stuff out of stock. They have different policies

  • +2

If anyone manages to price match this anywhere, make sure to post a receipt so it's easier for the rest of us to as well.

  • -4

    Bait and switch?

    • +3

      …no
      Mistake if anything
what are they selling to you (the switch) instead?

  • Wait a little bit longer, price will go further down once Nintendo confirms the release date for WII U. Maybe in Dec, I guess.

    • +2

      Thanks captain obvious…

Only problem is you won't have a 3ds until maybe December

  • David Jones themselves are usually pretty good with pricematching, so I doubt it will be too difficult to get them to match the deal. I'm going to at least give it a shot today.

    • +5

I don't get it. You getting David Jones to match their own price?

      • +1

Well yeah, I have serious doubts that the $199 is standard in-store. However as I said, price matching at DJ's isn't difficult, even more so when you have a DJ's card ;). I'll report back with any deets

    • +1

Let us know if it works, I know Big W doesn't match the Big W online prices (not when I've tried anyway)

  • He would have meant getting them to match the online price in store

  • [NOT REQUIRED ANYMORE DUE TO THE COMMENT BELOW]

    Kinda irritating.

    • +2

first rule of ozbargain: someone else has already bought what you just bought for cheaper

      • +1

Strange… I always thought the first rule of OzBargain was 'You do not talk about OzBargain'

  • +1

Console wars in MY ozbargain? More likely than you think.

  • I scored 1 at Miranda :)
Cosmos Black, they told me they don't price match their own site or any sites for that matter.

    Thanks very much "thelastnoob"

  • +1

I called up Carindale and they also informed me they do not pricematch their online store as its completely seperate. After reading 'thelastnoob's comment, I rang up Garden City and they said we're out of stock. So i decided to try my luck at Carindale again and once i got there, the dude went onto the david jones website and had no choice but to give it to me for $199 :)
thanks alot kyriacou48 and thelastnoob! Awesome deal

    • the sales clerk at Carindale David jones was an asshole. He wouldn't even look at my phone when I showed him the website. He just murmured that's out price I've had 50 calls today about a pic match and we won't do it. Then he carried on doing his own stuff. Complete wanker. I won't be shopping at David jones Carindale again

  • Please post receipt

  • David Jones Doncaster said no.

All I want is Zelda + a 3DS for <$300, but that is proving hard to find.

    • Some one went to jb and changed the big w deal $298 w/game from raymond or monkey ball to oot as they were the same price on the shelf.
      Try that.

  • They have all magically sold out.
won't sell the black for that price either…

  • can someone pls put a receipt up for us? I have two 3ds on laybe for my kiddies for xmas at big w and everytime you layby they send a letter saying that if you find a better price even after the layby they will adjust the price. might b able to do a better deal woohoo!

  • +1

Just picked up the last one at David Jones Marion. They were pretty surprised by the price but they still honored it.

    • can you please post copy of receipt

  • +3

Got mine just then from Castle Hill David Jones. After a bit of fath (I showed them the price on their site using my phone) and talking to the manager, they agreed to sell it to me at that price. They still had 3 more in stock after I got mine, but not sure if they are willing sell them at that price again.
    Thanks thelastnoob and kyriacou48!

some receipts would be really handy guys, I am smelling trolls left right and centre.

  • +1

I managed to get a one in Cosmos Black from Chadstone - awesome bargain!

Initially I rang Southland, and I was told they were in stock and they were able to match the price. I arrived there, however, and then I was told they were out of stock and they would be unable to match it anyway since it was a pricing error. Bastards.

I rang Chadstone, and again I was told they could hold a black one for $199. I went there and they said that the price was only for the blue version because it was supposedly being phased out (???).. But they decided to honour this one anyway since I was told differently over the phone. Someone else called about the 3DS while I was there but they were turned down. Another ozbargainer maybe?

    • I called them, they said no stock, I was too late…

Southland guy, colin I think, was kinda rude about it as well. Did not think the website said temporally out of stock, refused as they sold out of blue apparently…crap

If the error is not fixed by monday. I will buy one in the shop.

      • That's the same guy I talked to on the phone. He was alright about it and said they'd sell them at $199 until the price was fixed but when I went instore I was told "sold out" and the sales assistant was so extremely rude.

  • Wait 6 months for the cheaper, lighter, better look 2nd build version. Probably be $149.00, these are not selling well, price drop is very likely.

I won't be surprised if next week, the official price slides to $199 anyway.

    • 6 months? I think more like 18 months…

    • I can guarantee you it won't be $149. Maybe $249 by Christmas.

  • +1

My receipt from Garden City. http://www.users.on.net/~maf101/ds3dreceipt.jpg

I ordered the Myer $99 DS Lite Guitar Hero bundle before I price matched this. Which is best for a 6 year old girl?

    • DS Lite as it's apparently not good for little kids (3DS)

      • Just turn the 3D off and put a passcode lock on it

        • that just defeats the purpose of getting a 3DS in the first place.

    • 3DS as it's next-gen, soon enough games wont be coming out on NDS and only on 3DS.

Plus the '3D is bad for kids' is created by nintendo. Just read this article http://www.kotaku.com.au/2011/04/so-i-took-my-3ds-to-the-eye…

  • Hey guys
im at the DJ store at the moment and just bought one at the Burwood store
thanks to "thelastnoob" who sent me the receipt, i had to talk a bit cause they said they did not price match online.
They had 2 blue ones and one black one left in the glass cabinet. After they accepted it i had to wait cause the seller was on the phone with some one who was luckily able to put hold on the black 3Ds.
So call the burwood and put it hold!

    • +1

Lol that person was me. While on the phone I heard you talking to the seller. Initially the person wouldn't let me price match and she actually hung up on me. I called again and this time she said she would price match. I guess she talked to someone else (probably the store manager) and changed her mind.

I went up to pick it up but haven't bought any games yet.

      • lol small world huh

  • I got a black 3DS from Big W at Charlestown Square - Newcastle.
I went to David Jones at Westfield Kotara (Newcastle) and the lady wouldn't do it because she said they don't match any online prices.
I then called Big W at Charlestown and they said they would probably be able to match it if I brought in a print out of the price. I took a printed screen shot of the price and the receipt from 'thelastnoob' into the store and they gave it to me for $199.

  • +4

Hey all, thank you so very much for the praise! I'm quite new to the scene but I'll try and hold my reputation as a good poster! :D

Thanks to thelastnoob for somewhat of a risky attempt to price match, however it is well worth the risk in my opinion! The power of OzBarginers rises again! :D

  • +3

I managed to get one at Chatswood. Receipt http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/6852/3dsdavidjonesreceipt…

I don't even know if I really want it :P

    • +3

second rule of ozbargain: you always end up buying something because it's a bargain, not because you want it

  • +1

Anyone tried and had any luck with a price match in WA? I'm still deciding if I really need one, already got an iPod Touch, PSP 3000 and a DSiXL all of which I only occasionally.

    • +2

      Price matched at BigW Belmont.

Has a few 3D features - such as 3d camera. Otherwise it is an upgraded DSi. Havent got a 3d game yet to try though.
