      • Oh yeah, makes sense, i was looking for the code elsewhere

From 23 to 30 September 2019, eBay Australia are offering 20% off Computer Alliance!

        Looks like they changed it.

I sure hope they don't price jack before 10am for your sake!

  • What's the difference between the 2 NAS units? One boasts 1gb of ram, but they both have 1gb. Also aren't there any similar deals on the black coloured units?

    • P2 is Upgraded model. It has newer and slightly better processor..

    • +1

P2 also has upgradable RAM. If you're just going to use these purely for storage then go with the cheaper P model. The bottleneck will be the gigabit ethernet. I have this model running as an iSCSCI target and get the full throughput.

If you're looking to use it to run Plex, torrents etc, you're best to look at the next models up.

      • I'm thinking of using it primarily for bulk storage, but I might like the option of plex and torrents in the future. So are you saying P2 is good for that, or even P2 is not good enough?

        • I would look at other models besides these two of you're thinking of running apps on them. Both have relatively low end CPUs. However, you could use these purely for storage and run something like an Intel NUC for your apps. Some like to keep everything in one unit. The Synology DS918+ is popular here.

  • Thinking of picking up the WD Red 10tb hard drive but noticed that it is designed for NAS. Any issues with using it as a standalone drive in a desktop system?

    • +2

Nope. Personally I think these "designed-for"s are nothing more than gimmicks. They might have something specialized or optimized for specific use but down to the earth it's still traditional hard drives, used for storaging data. I'm running a 2T NAS HDD on my PC for music and movie and others, working perfectly with the other 2 SSDs. Haven't had any issues at all. I don't even remember it (as a NAS HDD)

      • I've always wondered about the premium on Red drives, I've had some Green drives in a NAS that have been chugging along for years with no problem at all.

        • I've got a mixture of red and greens in my FreeNAS box (17 drives all up) and a few of the greens have failed but only one of the reds has and that was replaced inside of warranty. They've been running constantly for over 5 years without spinning down except to reboot occasionally. I happily pay extra for the reds because of that and the warranty.

Use greens as backups, but never trust them to hold valuable data.

Is $367.20 for the WD Red 10TB, the cheapest it has ever been?

    • +2

Yes, I believe so. The cheapest price I had seen before this was June 27th, when I bought one for $381.65.

  • Which type of drive should I get to be installed in a PC to hold media? Is a NAS drive suitable for this purpose?

    • Yes, some desktop drives are low power so park heads frequently to save power and the head servos fail …..Nas longer before they park heads.

    Too much tempt.
    Bought two 10TB WD Reds.
At least now I'll have the spare storage capacity to migrate my array.

i think $25 per TB is the new sweet spot
