Ring Dilemma - Please Help Me Pick One

Hiya,

I apologise for creating yet another jewellery thread but I just can't make up my mind :( If you could choose either of these rings, which one would you pick?

Oval version or round version. Please ignore the wedding rings in both version.

Cheers!

  • Just for the fun of it, which ring would you say has the biggest Centre diamond (carat-wise) ?

    • Round?

      • They are the same carat:) Does the round look bigger?

        • Ahhh … I should have known you wouldn't skrimp on Mrs JJb's diamond carat weight irrespective of shape šŸ˜‰

          • @[Deactivated]: This was the original design for the round version. Unfortunately 15mm would have been bigger than my wife's finger :(
Both of the 2 rings I'm considering getting now have a 1/2 carat main stone and even that might be too big. The version she likes the best has a 4mm sapphire and her favorite feature are the petals which is basically the bit where there's no gold and no diamonds šŸ˜‚

            • @[Deactivated]: It's a stunning design!

  • Oval ring would suit long slender fingers a litter better!

    • The ring is being made to replace a family heirloom that was stolen. My wife has long, slender fingers and so does my daughter. Can't guarantee, however, that her daughter or daughter-in-law won't have short pudgy digits :p

  • I'd need to see them on your hand to choose :-)

    • Yellow gold is my favourite colour but I'm not gansta enough to rock the bling-blings :P

  • +1

    Neither.

    • Technically they are free or rather they will be. Not very ozbargainy to say no to a freebie.

  • +1

Personally I think the round looks more balanced, the oval sticks out more and seems to cut across, making it look more like it was added on as an after thought. However, it'll probably look different on someones finger.

Also, who cares what I think, I'm not the one that'll be wearing it!

    • I designed both rings. The oval one was as an engagement ring for a mate. He wanted the setting to be raised so that a wedding ring could sit closer.

The round one was designed partly based on a family heirloom and a rattan mirror that we'd found in the hard rubbish when we were newly weds trying to cheaply furnish our flat. I added the split shank so that a wedding ring could sit closer without having to raise the setting.

I'm not a 100% happy with either settings tbh. There's still room for improvement. The oval is up for sale though so I do have to make up my mind fairly soon whether I want it or not.

The oval one was as an engagement ring for a mate

I hope you two are very happy together

        • -1

          We are :)

  • I would choose the oval one because it provides an accent. The round one seems round all 'round — small round diamonds in a round placement, surrounding a big round diamond. Theoval one seems trendier though, possibly a con for an heirloom.

    • Would you like the oval better with a split shank like the round?šŸ¤”

      • +1

Had to google what a split shank is… yes that would look even better on the oval in my opinion. More… regal. ha ha.

  • Thanks for all those who voted :) The round version was my daughter's favourite too.

However, while going through my wife's jewelry box, we've found a broken diamond bracelet and a sapphire brooch, which were passed down to her from each of our grandmas. We've decided to design a piece using the 18 tiny, round diamonds and 12 sapphire baguettes. Since it'll be too big for a ring, this is what we're getting made. It is a pendant. Yay or nay?

What do you think of it? Yay or Nay?

    • Yay.
      And poll needed.

      • Added poll and more pics. Still yay? It can be set with white diamond instead of a salt & pepper one.

        • +1

          Still yay?

Yes for the most part. I'm just not so sure about the sharp "claws" holding the main stone (not sure what the technical term is). They feel a bit dungeons and dragons compared to the rest of the ring.
Just my 2 cents and I'm sure it's the recipient's thoughts that matter most.

          • @zonra: The technical term is 'claw prongs'. You were close :)

        • Did you design this? Did you get this made? It's beautiful. I like the subtle Eiffel tower elements. Would be even more special if someone proposed with this ring on the Eiffel tower! haaha

          • @magpie15: It's not for me. A mate was planning to propose to his girlfriend in Paris but the pandemic threw a spanner in the works… so he brought Paris to her :)

    • Very nice setting.

      What's the rock?

      • The "rock" is a diamond which has visible inclusions in it. You can get them cut in any shape you want and they are less expensive than white diamonds. I think the rustic-ness of the salt & pepper diamond suits the design. Or would you prefer a white ( close to flawless / flawless) diamond instead?

      • Some more examples of salt and pepper diamonds. These ones are round.

    • +1

Honestly can't see the resemblance unless you put the picture of the tower beside it.

      • I agree but now that you've seen it …

    • Yay to the ring, you had me at rose gold. Nay to looking like the Eiffel Tower, but I can see how it is inspired by it, if that makes sense. If you showed me the ring without saying where the idea came from, I wouldn't have gotten it.

I do feel like the shape kind of gives it an antique-look, but that's not a bad thing at all.

I'm guessing it has some significance to you so it makes complete sense and tbh as long as the symbolism exists for you (and your partner, I'm guessing) then that's all that matters!

      • Nay to looking like the Eiffel Tower,

I'm actually surprised that quite a few people like it. It is such a unique and unusual design and I was expecting it to be more polarising.

    • +1

That's thoughtful! Great design compared to the stock standard from Argyles. May I ask the pricing for the size you bought?

      • $3600.

        • 18K RG?

          • @OzCheapo: Yep.

Gemstone: Salt & Pepper Hexagon Diamond x 1 piece
            Melee stones: VS/G diamond 1mm x 10 pieces (0.05CTW)
            + 2 kite-shaped diamonds (0.7 CTW)

    • Fun fact - the height of the Eiffel Tower varies between season, by up to 6 inches!

      • +1

        Fun fact #2 :

The Eiffel Tower was never intended to stand over the Champ-de-Mars permanently, and was scheduled to be dismantled in 1909 - that is, until someone realised that its apex was the perfect place for a telegraphy antenna. During the First World War, at the Battle of Marnes in 1914, the wireless telegraph transmitter helped jam German communications.

        • +1

That goes well with my other fun fact that Hitler ordered for it to be destroyed but the person responsible for it defected to France.

    • Not a fan of that style personally, but it's well done. Rings should mean something, and if the Tower means something to the wearer, it'd be lovely!

  • Merged from What Do People Think of This Ring?

I should start by saying I loath green sapphires. I think they are the ugliest green gems out there. So I would appreciate your opinion on this ring. I personally dislike like it but I can't decide if it is because of the design or the green sapphire centre stone.

    Thank you.

    Here's a handshot.

Main gem: 1.26ct Top quality natural sapphire, Madagascar
    Sidestones: 0.52ct diamonds ( F, VS)

    • Yea

    • +1

I usually prefer other coloured gems, but I like this shade. The sidestone design balances out the size of the sapphire.
      I'd wear it.

      • Taking jewelry design as an elective or rather thinking of doing so. "The crap around it" are diamonds :)

        • +12

I knew this was a JJB thread just by the title. Sad on both accounts I guess.

          • +4

@Muzeeb: Plus anything took do with floorplans, we know its gonna be a JJB post!

          • @Muzeeb: What do you mean? I design jewelry, make furniture, renovate houses, perform micro-surgeries, shoot at space junk…etc I can turn my hand to almost anything. Except fishing. I just can't sit still long enough to catch a fish :/

    • +2

I only like the one ring to rule them all

    • It beats the shit out of your last proposed rock. I would have been laughed out of the house if I tried to sell that rock as a 'salt and pepper's diamond.

      • I love salt & pepper - there is so much beauty in imperfection. She said 'yes' :)

        • Congratulations. She's a keeper.

          • @tsunamisurfer: LOL! She's said to the man she loves, not to me. I'm already married to an ozbargainer.

              • @Kangal: Not at all. My wife doesn't even wear a wedding ring.

            • @[Deactivated]:

She said 'yes' to the man she loves

Not sure what's happening to my phone. It keeps freezing when I type.

      • I take it you won't like this one either then. It's a moss agate, not a diamond.

    • +2

Agree with you. I will look past this ring too.
      1. the setting of stones looks old fashioned.
      2. the diamonds around are plenty, which gives the illusion the middle gem is small.
      3. the cutting of the middle stone does not make the blink shiny, even under good light and when you change the angle by rotating your wrist.
      4. the green sapphire looks pale.

      • Thanks!

    • +4

I must say, I knew it was a Jar Jar post before clicking on it… :/

      • +2

Agree, always keen to show us his ring

    • +1

its the dark centre that is visible within the stone which makes it shyte imo.

    • Have to be over 60 to wear it

    • Looks like costume jewellery - and the nails clash!

    • +1

I think Iā€™d prefer if it were silver or white gold.

    • Pls send in the mail thanks. I'll pay for shipping.

    • Looks like a design from 25 years ago. Nay.

  • Username does not check out, should be Frodo. But I guess he only wanted one ring.

Jjb is now disableduser, never thought I'd see the day.

    • I wonder why.
