how come 2? is there a limit of how many you can get?

    • There isn't, but some of the counter ladies treat them as normal prepaid SIMs and they think if you get more than 4, they are not sure about the form that you normally fill in when you get a prepaid phone. But normally, once they've checked with the sales guys, they normally let you have as many as you like.

With these ones, you don't need to fill in any form or provide any ID.

  • if you get something like this http://www.dealextreme.com/p/micro-sim-card-to-standard-sim-… it should work with the Mytab or other tablet yah?

You don't need that. The good thing about the Optus prepaid SIMs (new ones) is they are cut in special way that you can use each of them as normal SIM or a micro SIM.

However, if you elect to take the SIM out of the plastic card as micro SIM, then you will need a SIM converter to use it on devices needing normal SIM later on. It is hard to explain.. but once you get one, you will understand.

How did you get it? Did you have to ask at the counter, or was it just given to you? Did you have to purchase anything? Sounds good, if I can get a couple for the MyTab :o)

    • You need to find them. Each store puts them in different places. Most of the time, they are near the area which has all the USB prepaid dongles / pocket wifis. If the store has them, they are generally easy to find.

Some stores put them in the $2 SIM trays. Unfortunately, some stores don't have them anymore.

Depending on the store, you can just walk out with those free SIMs OR they still want to give you an invoice with $0.

      • Thank you for the info :o) I'll try to pop in tomorrow for one or two (well, let's see if I can find any lol)

it has a 20 day expiry upon activation. just help your self at the stand. i dont think theres is a limit. please be considerate for others that may need it. there were heaps left at Garden city HN, it would save me buying recharge vouchers if i stocked up with enough to last me til xmas lol. now i wish i grabbed more before posting this as it might get ozbargained. please be considerate for others that may need it if you dont own a ipad. if anyone gets it working on a mytab please let me know?

All's fair in love and bargains.

    • They work on MyTab (because they are basically prepaid SIMs with 500MB bonus credit).

The down side of having too many of these is that you need to activate every single SIM - bonus credit finishes in 20 days.

It can be used as a normal SIM or a micro SIM.

Another issue is some HN stores used to have them… but they seem to now put them at the back of their store storage area (not accessible by the customers) and when you enquire about them, most of the sales don't know where they put/store them.

      • The down side of having too many of these is that you need to activate every single SIM - bonus credit finishes in 20 days.

This could be a downside, considering - as far as I know - you can't have more than 5 prepaid accounts registered to your name…maybe keep that in mind, guys.

        • 4 in six months I believe, hence the limit on mytabs.

      • Trying to put on my Touch HD phone NO GO any hints ?

  • Good freebie! Going to grab one (or two) tomorrow.

  • HN martin place sydney cbd, confirm please ?

    • just went there at 1pm today. Couldn't find it anywhere. Not with the pre-pay sims near the phone (despite having $2 optus starter packs), not by the USB devices, not with the itunes cards

If anyone finds them… speak up.

  • Any idea of expiry date? this looks like the best deal of the day

    500mb = 50mb on optus!

  • Do Optus have any way of knowing you are not using them in an iPad? Is there a clause in the user agreement stating that the sim cards must be used in an iPad only?

    • Yes Optus is able to tell by the IMEI, that you are using an iPad, its just how Optus implements the SIM if used in a non iPad device, this would probably be in the terms of the user agreement.

  • Technical info about these SIMs:
    - Physically, they look like normal Optus prepaid SIM so each one can be used as a normal SIM or micro SIM.
    - They are setup to use a different APN. The APN is ConnectMe - perhaps a special APN for iPad.
    - These SIMs have an expiry date of 1st April 2012 so you need to activate them before then.
    - The 500MB is bonus credit and they do expire after 20 days. Recharge won't keep unused portion.

  • does the data get used up in the 10mb sessions? Any idea how the data is billed (i.e. per kb, mb etc)?

    • 10MB sessions.

      • What's Optus' definition of a session?

Very dodgy accounting when they could easily charge for the data used. Surprised the TIO let them get away with it (for now). Maybe they still need to learn the hard way.

A session is when your phone gets a data connection. If it disconnects and starts a new session, you should have a new IP address. It is not a TCP session. My phone can go for days with one session. Be sure you set your phone to stay connected, and not just reconnect as needed.

        • Thanks. I would have though staying connected would use more data. Also I wonder what happens if temporarily in a dead spot/no reception, does it just reconnect (as a new session) anyway?

  • I have been using a so-called iPad SIM in a USB modem.
The only difference is that the iPad SIM uses a different APN, "connectme".

BTW, what people are calling a standard SIM is actually a mini-SIM. The original SIM size is the same as a credit card.
So SIMs now are actually provided in 3 different sizes. The credit-card size fits my still-working super-retro Nokia 1610 with belt clip.

  • I was told by a friend that Harvey Norman in Wagga Wagga charged $2 for the package. It was clearly labelled "Free SIM" (with 500MB data). There is a receipt to prove that $2 was paid. But for $2 to get 500MB is worth it. Data to be used in 28 days. But you can keep the SIM for up to 1 June 2012.

    • Correction: 20 days to use the data, not 28 days.

  • Picked a few from Harvey Norman at Oxley in Brisbane today. There were lots in a bin near counter for $2 and a few slightly different ones marked $0

Has anybody seen these in Vic?

I checked both the Moorabin location and the city one. Moorabin had no idea about them, but admitted they didn't sell ipads. City said they didn't have them, and there had been nothing like it for months.

If somebody could post a picture of it, it would make it alot easier to find.

  • its not only HN that have them. i picked up another at an optus dealer yesterday free

    • Checked out a small optus dealer and also an optus store. They both looked at me weird and didn't have any.
They did offer me their $15 sim deal with 300mb of data

  • Grabbed a couple from HN today. Thanks coolsteps.

  • Had a quick look, they do not appear to be available in Sydney, and no one in Sydney has posted that they have been able to get them.

Three does give away free iPad SIMs, but they only have 300mb data on them, and ACMA forms need to be filled out.

  • Went to HN Chaddy and there was a locked box full of them. I got the computer guy to unlock it and got three for my wife.

    • Thanks bud, you are gold. I might head down there tomorrow and pick a few up

  • I got a couple from Home HQ, Nunawading

    • From Harvey Norman? (It's not in HomeHQ. It's a separate complex next door) or another store actually in Home HQ?

    • I grabbed two on the weekend from there too when picking up my ASUS Eeepc bargain. They were in the bins near the register.
