  • can 3rd gen chromecast stream 4k youtube?

    • +2

Only Chromecast Ultra can stream 4k, I believe.

    • +1

I believe only the Chromecast Ultra can, 4K also requires you to have a ethernet connection.

      • +1

You can stream 4K over wifi too with the Ultra

      • +1

This is wrong, chocolatebegood is correct, you can stream 4K over wifi to the Ultra

        • +1

Oh okay my bad, must have remembered wrong

Guess ethernet is just for a stable connection

  • Was waiting for a deal on Chromecast for a couple months. Ended up ordering VTV yesterday. Figures!

    • VTV is better imho anyway, Ultra is faster but VTV is more feature-rich.

      • +2

VTV? For those not in the know?
NVM, found further down, Vodafone TV

  • +1

The ultra is so much faster than the gen 1, I couldn't believe the difference
Coles Mastercard price protection thank youuu

    • +1

what about the speed difference between normal gen 3 vs gen 1?

      • -1

        No idea

      • Yeah it's still much faster. Worthy upgrade imo

  • Can these be used without a smart phone? ie. from a laptop?

    • +1

Yes - can stream via laptop

      • thanks…

    • +5

Only certain websites (like YouTube or Netflix) will provide dedicated streaming functionality where the stream is direct from their servers to the Chromecast device. However, otherwise it will fall back to screen mirroring from Chrome which is pretty lame (drains your battery, re-encoding affects quality, only 720p).

      • -2

        Not true.

      • Does it re-encode local media streaming?

  • +1

    What is VTV?

  • +1

what's better? Chromecast Ultra or Vodafone TV?

    • +1

Totally different. Vodafone TV works standalone, Chromecast requires you to "cast" to it from another device (PC/Phone/Tablet).

    • Could I installed Kayo sports app directly in this one? Looks like I should be able to as it has access to Google Play Store. Anyone tried it successfully?

      • It doesn't store anything it just received streams from steaming devices. I stream Kayo from my phone to the Chromecast and it works perfectly.

        • I meant could I install Kayo app on VTV instead of streaming Kayo through my phone app to CC. That way I can use multi screen capability which kayo app has. What CC you got - 3rd gen or Ultra?

    • VTV has inbuilt chromecast and can stream at 4k, is more feature-rich with a remote and ui. CC Ultra is much faster at casting.

      • +1

VTV casting can be incredibly iffy, have had some pretty bad experiences with various streams getting out of sync or stuttering.

I.e Optus Sports Live Streams were excellent, but replays were horrible - different codec apparently, and VTV couldn't cope.

Amazon Prime casting is a disaster, but I don't have a CC to compare to for that (gave CC away because the VTV is better overall).

Everything else about the VTV is pretty great - the remote is awesome, and the thing cost only 70-ish bucks!

        • Switched to shield for this reason - cast either not showing up or dropping out

  • +1

I have CC gen 1 and Kayo stutters when casting. Would Gen 3 work better or do I need CC Ultra?

PS: I do not have ethernet conection near the TV which might be a issue with Ultra.

    • Mine is better. My gen 1 stutters YouTube. The ultra doesn't

      • Yeah, my Gen 2 fixed all the problems I had with streaming on the Gen 1. I’d say the Gen 3 would have no problem as well

    • +1

Kayo doesn't officially support the first two generations of standard Chromecast - they're not powerful enough to deliver 1080p video at 50fps, which Kayo uses. Their workaround is to limit those devices to 720p but as you've seen, it doesn't always work great even then.

Gen 3 would work much better, Kayo states they support 1080p50 on that device.

Gen 3 doesn't come with the Ethernet adaptor by the way, only the Ultra does. With decent wi-fi you won't need Ethernet for Kayo content.

      • Thanks - appreciate your reply.

  • Huh same price I paid on 1/11/18 – good to know!

  • +1

My chromecast always loses connection from the wifi after some time. Then when it reconnects I can't find the device unless i soft reset my router My other devices hold connection fine. anyone think this is a chromecast or a router issue?

  • Chromecast 1st gen gets power via USB port in the TV. Does Chromecast 3rd gen require a power point or will work the same as Chromecast 1st gen via USB?

    • It still uses a usb port from your tv

      • Thanks. It says it comes with a power adapter so was not sure if TV's USB power would be enough for 3rd gen.

        • +1

Yeah they supply also a power adapter like the ones to charge mobiles

        • you want to separately power the chromecast if you want to be able to turn the TV from your device (or by voice with google home).

ie, i might sit down on the couch and say "OK Google, play XXX" and it will turn the TV on, and start playing XXX from youtube/stan/netflix/spotify etc etc. If you only have it plugged into USB in TV, you have to turn the TV on first!

          • +2

@geoffs87: Wow, this is big news!

            Porn on YouTube etc.

            • @jackspratt: I didnt know there was porn on youtube. Oh well, should have used XYZ rather than XXX for that example haha.

          • @geoffs87: Do you need certain TV functionality for that. Doesn't seem to work on my 2015 model Panasonic (I have the CC plugged into the wall).

            • +1

@bleeder: Hmm, maybe… but it works fine on my probably 2013 LG LCD, and my 2015 Samsung LCD. You may need to turn on the CEC settings on your tv… this link may help!

            • +1

@bleeder: I have it working on a 2013 Panasonic LED TV, just make sure CEC is turned on (they call it viera link) :)

              • @lachhelix: I think mine only has one port with viera link and I have my sound bar plugged in to that. Could be wrong though… Cheers.

                • @bleeder: Oh, well mine has all 3. I believe it's just a protocol the TV uses, not confined to a specific port (unlike ARC which is often just 1 port)
                  Give it a go!

                  • @lachhelix: I've been trying this and it's actually plugged in to the ARC port and still won't work. Yet for some reason works on my Mum's 2007 Panasonic, no setup required!

    • hey? I have a first gen and I have to plug it into the wall.

  • Just a reminder, it won't work with Foxtel Go unless you are paying for multiroom

    • +1

You can also add multi casting for $15/mth without the need to have multiroom

    • foxtel go app is only mobile now, PC uses browser.

      any workarounds to stream?

      • They did that to avoid a HDMI connection of the pc to the tv. I don’t think there is a workaround you know how hideous is Foxtel.

        • I can still do hdmi and put the browser on fullscreen, did it the other week. I was hoping chromecast or VTV would be an easier option

  • I have been looking at a GoPro(not top of the line, but something good enough) and ended up buying a GoPro 7 Silver for $250 :) Very happy with the recent price drop and now a further $50 off! Thanks OP!

Does the Chromecast ultra come with free Amazon prime video?

    • why would that be free? anyway, you are lucky prime video works on chromecast. only a recent feature added by amazon.

    • No. Why would Amazon undercut their own Firestick?

      • +1

After long wait, Chromecast can now stream Amazon Prime video. I use it with Gen 1 Chromecast.

    • No, it has nothing free. It does mirror your phone or tablet, that's it

    • If you were asking if you can stream Prime video from your mobile to Chromecast, answer is yes.
I use it now with my Chromecast gen1 and dont see a reason why it wont on Chromecast Ultra.

  • -2

    Whats the normal price?

  • -3

Price match the ChromeCast Ultra at Officeworks and get it for $75.24

    • Since when do officeworks price match eBay coupons?!

      • +2

Since I walked in there today and got it? No idea.

        • Well that's awesome! I'm going to try my local store

          • +1

@lachhelix: I priced matched today - can confirm.

I asked the guy, he said we do it for the bigger retailers like the good guys.

            • @69 dollar dealz: Must be luck of the draw!
My OW wouldn't do it unfortunately, so just went to TGG instead haha.

      • +1

The officeworker probably missed the ebay part and considered only it was from Good Fellas

        • Nope, I mentioned it was GG eBay store and he said as long as it was legitimate, then all good. Went through step-by-step from OzBargain site and showed him the end price. Potentially I got lucky with someone too busy, inexperienced, or didn't care, but I got it.

    • Would you mind uploading the receipt. we might as well try at OW

  • +2

Thank you, picked an Ultra up!

  • Anyone else coming across an error when trying to apply the code? I keep getting "This code can't be applied to your order."

EDIT: my bad, I worked it out - forgot to change my registered address from UK to Australia.

  • How good is the Chromecast WIFI range?

I've got a LCD TV in the shed that is about 20m away from the main house. I do have a WIFI extender which works around the home and yard.

  • Is it worth getting the Ultra if I don't have a 4k + HDR TV? I intend to use it with my 1080P projector.
