Raspberry Pi 4 is a single-board computer that is the size of a credit card. It can be used for programming, games, media, and all sorts of things.

Some of the features:

  • 1.5GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A72 CPU
  • True Gigabit Ethernet
  • 2 × USB 3.0 and 2 × USB 2.0 ports
  • 2 × micro-HDMI ports (1 × 4kp60 or 2 × 4kp30)
  • USB-C for input power, supporting 5.1V 3A operation
  • LPDDR4 RAM 1GB

For those new to Raspberry Pi, here are the recommended essentials (if you don't have them already):

Of all the cases, our favourite is this one. It has excellent passive cooling and is silent.

Some other case options:

  • Argon One (NUC like appearance, all of the cables route to one side)
  • Argon Poly+ (better natural airflow than the official case, has cut-outs on the base)
  • Dual Fan Aluminium Case (Certainly not silent, though over-the-top cooling)

Other frequently asked Raspberry Pi questions and resources:

The 1GB Raspberry Pi represents the best value for money. It can do everything the 3B+ was known for, though much (much!!) faster. For some people, this will be their first Raspberry Pi, and for others, it will be the 2nd or 22nd. We hope this helps make ends meet either way and thanks for your support over the years!

        It's a pickup.

        • Nice, it's just after 2pm, so at the latest, you'll get that "ready to pockup" email tomorrow late-morning

Don't forget to grab the latest DIYODE magazine when you drop in, they are still free for pickups :)

  • +1

Can these run YouTube. The 3 couldn't do it .

    • Streaming is pretty intensive as it requires video processing. I've heard it's passable on the 4 but not great.

      • My Pi2 handles 1080p streaming just fine through Kodi. I'm guessing you're talking about 4k streaming on youtube?

      • Do you know if it can handle 4k60 HEVC videos?

    • These have USB3 and Gigabit NIC. I would say it could handle it.

    • In hardware it'll only do HEVC/H.265 in 4k. The Trouble with Youtube they dont use H265 but rather VP9 which works great on any recent Android based OS but not so great on RPI4 (or even iPhone for that matter).
I believe the RPi4 will do h264 will do upto 1080p in hardware however which is still reasonable.

Another vote for a deal on the 4GB model, please. Thanks for raising the profile of delicious Pis, Graham!

    • +4

Another vote here for a deal on the 4GB model please CoreElectronics

  • +3

how much are the 2GB and 4GB versions are they on special?

  • -2

    4GB 50$ would be very nice :D , i'd buy it instantly

    • Instantly it will be out of stock for this price!

      • Hahah , very true!

  • +3

So add a case and a power supply, it'll be north of $100

    • Power supply is essential. But get an active/passive cooling case is much better than the official case. You will still be under $100 for a powerful machine does many things.

  • Does it have wifi? Google says it does

    • yes.

  • I found its best to use as a small NAS with openmediavault. You don't need this to run pihole or pivpn. However I suppose you can run these servers through docker in openmediavault. Running retropie is also good. Don't get the official case which causes thermal throttling.

  • +4

I'm using it to build a weather station with my kids.
    https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en/projects/build-your-own-….

Its not cheap to put the station together and I am sure I could buy one completed etc for a cheaper price, but that is not the point in this case.

  • +5

Even if not the 4GB, can we get a deal on the 2GB.

Appreciate the post too. Can't have too much pi…

  • Why would this be preferable to $300 laptop?

    • +4

This is not a laptop replacement, more of a experimental toy.

    • +1

Hardly a toy. I use one almost daily as a media player running OSMC. Can't handle 4k but fine for 1080p
Another one runs home assistant 24/7 managing maybe 15 devices.

    • Because $54 < $300?

      • -1

But when you add peripherals case cooling etc etc sum goes up quickly.

Compact laptop for experimental stuff is more efficient

        • By what measure of efficiency?

How many GPIO pins readily available on laptops?

(Although I do agree that all the bits and bobs can add up with the Pi)

  • Looking at getting this for pi-hole.

Are there any cheaper alternatives? Can I use a spare phone charger for this?

Otherwise I need to spend $54 + $13 for case $15 for power supply = $82 + shipping. More than what I'd like to spend just to block ads.

    • +1

      Are there any cheaper alternatives?

      This would be a overkill.
Getter lower end Pi, in theory any model of Pi will work with Pi-hole.

How about Pi Zero https://learn.adafruit.com/pi-hole-ad-blocker-with-pi-zero-w… :)

      • Was thinking to get something with Ethernet for better speeds/stability. Unless you reckon WiFi is sufficient?

        • Try pi zero W first?

If you are that sensitive to lag add a USB Lan with a male microusb to female USB adaptor

Otherwise go ahead with zero without W with USB LAN

I have seen somewhere in Reddit a pi zero W pi-hole can handle 40 or 50 clients

For me I just use pi 3b+ headless to run Hass and pi-hole over LAN no problemo

      • Running an additional layer of DNS to strip adverts (lets face it, you wouldn't normally get that much) on your network would add to your network lag wouldn't it?

        • negamative.
firstly, tons of ad and tracking dns requests from apps and webpages, you'd be shocked.
yes, any additional appliance will add ms to your requests however you won't then be waiting for those requests to fulfill. so while you may be adding 1 or 2 ms you save 3 or 4 (i did a bit of testing when i first installed the hole of pi and it was a wee bit better, nothing incredible <10ms BYMMV).

      • Can you check if this is the right one?

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Original-Raspberry-Pi-Zero-Pi-Ze…

I can use an old phone charger for this one, right?

  • -2

    Wish it had bluetooth

Edit: looks like it has bluetooth, or maybe i'm wrong

  • I have purchased the Pi Zero W and a Pi 4 2GB from Core Electronics and their service is excellent.

My Pi4 runs Homebridge, a print server, PiVPN and PiHole well.

  • Might as well ask, any deals on the screens for my Octoprint

  • +1

    Mmm raspberry pi

  • Any deals on the 4gb variant?

    • Yeah, lots of people asked for that (me included). The rep must have seen it and chose not to reply so far. I take that as 'work in progress' rather than a 'no'.

      • +1

You can get 'em $90 delivered on eBay (even cheaper if you have discounted ebay gift cards to use).

The OP seems to be offering a ~10% discount on 1GB variant so even if he comes through with an deal, I suspect it'll be around that price-point anyway given you need to pay postage on top.

Either way its only a couple of bucks difference, not likely to send you to the poor house anytime soon.

        • I can't find it on eBay for less than $100, but even if I did I'd prefer this seller here.

And of course I can afford it at list price, but this is ozBargain, and the $5 savings got this deal 150+ votes. Everyone loves a bargain :-)

  • I bought the RPI 1,2,3,3+ upon release, and have used them all extensively for something.

For some reason though, even though the rPI4 is the best one so far, mine (4gb) is just sitting there doing nothing.

    • +4

      Username checks out.

    • +2

If I am truthful, I just want to make a cluster that makes the Nostromo boot sequence sounds.

    • 4 is the best so far why?

      Real ethernet is a plus..

      https://bgr.com/2019/07/10/raspberry-pi-4-usb-c-charging-iss…

      https://www.zdnet.com/article/raspberry-pi-4-getting-hot-a-c…

I prefer not having to cool any of my pi's with a heatsink or fan.

      • +1

Those heating issues are solved with a firmware update which also reduces power usage.
I can play N64 games and some dreamcast games on mine at full speed sustained for ages without any cooling now.
(Prior to the updates the thing was unstable and kept crashing)

        Anyway it's the best because:
        1. It's got the fastest CPU
        2. It has USB3 and 1gbit nic (not everything going through a USB2 controller)
        3. Up to 4GB of RAM (this can work as a very shitty web browsing desktop)
        4. Mine can power a raid array of USB SSDs and serve files over my network faster than my HP N40L

I'm just not really using mine very much. Still got my rPI3+ hooked up as an HTPC.

  • Could this be used for my kid who wants to try and become a videogame streamer? Trying to encourage him into IT and especially Linux.

    • +1

Having an attractive personality is more important for a streamer than IT know how

      • +1

        That or boobs.

    • Maybe if he's talking about it and stuff but that's about it.

    • Not really. You could get him to learn python/ruby on it and steam make tutorial videos I guess? But this won't stream any games he'd be interested in.

    • Thank you all for the responses, I will look at a SFF pc and second monitor instead.

    • +1

That's your kid's way of saying he wants to drop out of school.

      • Rofl. Yeah I blame the other party.

  • Can I use this to set up a 4 bay NAS? would it be usable?

    • 2 USB 3.0 ports so you probably need a USB 3 hub (you might as well get a USB 3 power hub as you don't want 4 USB HDDs/SSDs drawing power from RPi). Usable yes.

    • Doable, but might not be quick enough for some of the more intensive processes a NAS would do.

    • I'd be worried about the power draw and sustain on those USB3 ports. Even with a hub, you'd probably need a powered hub… so 2 AC adaptors plugged to the wall… if you got the space.

      • You can power the Pi from the same hub, if you have enough power going into the hub (eg. 5A).

  • Never looked into these so this might be a dumb question, but can these be setup to play movies from a hard drive and sync to a Philips Hue light setup to sync to the movies?

  • -3

    Is this an iphone?

  • +5

I'm one of the biggest pi fans out there, But… I need to say the 1gb pi4… Isn't that great. If you are planning to use it for desktop or especially 4k output you are in for a bad time. Booting the pi up, it has already mazed out its ram and using swap file, slowing it to a crawl.

Cooling wise, the stock case looks and works great except it needs to have more venting or active cooling - it throttles sooner with it on.

I'd personally recommend the 2gb as a sweet spot of availability and price.

Also get the pi4 usb c, it's great value too and great form factor.

Speaking as experience with a 1gb and 4gb pi4 as well as many as the previous models.

  • -3

Has an Ethernet slot but no built-in WiFi?

    • Where did you read that?

  • Found this if anybody interested,
Watch "Raspberry Pi 4 Review - Dual displays and upto 4GB of RAM" on YouTube
    https://youtu.be/AVfyTd3YDL8

Refer his comments for test info

  • Do these have enough ram to play local 4k content over gigabit network? Need to retire my 3b.

    • maybe nVidia's Jetson Nano would be more suitable if they have the right software/support, considering the GPU on that SBC. Could be an option if you're looking to retire your 3b for a step up.

  • I need a box that gets catch-up TV channels for my parents. Now that Kodi doesn't support them anymore, is there a way for a Raspberry Pi to do this?

    • +2

Get a Vodafone TV box instead, easier than teaching your parents to use whatever hacky solution is found for the pi…

      • Thanks, I didn't know the Vodafone TV box existed! An android TV box with a warranty for $72, sounds exactly what my parents need.

  • How do i choose store pick-up? I can only see the paid shipping option.

  • If you have a computer on all the time, just run raspberry pi in a virtual machine.

That's how I run my pi hole. Using VMWare ESXi 6.7 as the host.

  • For those who prefer the 4GB RAM model, $90 deal on ebay (incl. delivery) recently posted to Ozbargain:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/488848

  • Any idea when the Pi Zero W will be available again?
