Still waiting for a SF30 Pro deal :(

I like the 8bitdo controllers, but haven't really gotten the point of the SN30 Pro+. It's definitely nice, but I've just found that the Switch Pro controller, Dualshock 4 and Xbox One controllers are just better controllers at the price point. Don't get me wrong, I love my SN30 for retro games, but the dogbone design and classic old-school feel is what makes that controller unique for me.

    • True enough, I've still got my older 'dogbone' (cool descriptor btw) kicking around synced up on my PC/Snes mini Classic for retroarch and truly oldschool titles.

In my case I've only ever used 8Bitdo's for my Switch, and after a while I kind of wanted something with better L2/R2 (or ZL/ZR.. still learning these new labels :P) than the original 8bitdo pro provided. A quick mod later to replace those ugly purple buttons with the classic RBGY ones and I couldn't be happier.

      • I've actually got my SN30's hooked up to my original SNES with the Retro Adaptors, nice to be able to play the classic systems with wireless controllers and I wouldn't have it any other way. I've tried it for the Switch, but the Switch Pro controller is just a really, really good controller and it's so hard to beat.

    • While I agree the Dualshock 4 and Xbone controllers are better, neither of them connect natively to the switch like the 8Bitdo controllers do, which is a pretty big selling point.

I bought an SN30 Pro (non-plus model) a few weeks ago from an overseas seller…still waiting for it to arrive.

      • I agree but why wouldn't you get a switch pro controller for $6 more if your using it for switch. It has rumble and amiibo function too.

        • where can you get a new switch pro controller for $65 delivered?

Personal preference, I don't like how the LStick and D-Pad are positioned and swapped around on the official Pro.
          Good to have options.

        • I've heard nothing but complaints about the D-pad on the Pro, typing in "Switch Pro D-Pad" into Google give tons of results across multiple forums discussing the wonky D-pad, I bought my SN30P+ based on that. Plus some people just prefer symmetrical stick layout over asymmetrical.

The best controller for the Switch is the Pro controller. I've tried using a whole bunch of controllers with the Switch including the 8bitdo controllers.

I also have the non-plus model, it's great for retro games, but for modern Switch games, it's just not as good IMO. Retro games usually are much more reliant on quick, twitchy movements, so a light, clicky controller is really good for that. Modern games usually need you to hold an analog stick in one direction for a really long time (e.g. just hold it forward to go forward). Without the grips, these movements make your hands sore really quickly. There's a reason why controllers these days all have grips aren't the old "dogbone" style anymore.

The best controller for the Switch is the Pro controller.

Nah. Xbox Elite Controller with Brook X One Adapter.

Battery life and the ability to wake the Switch are two major benefits of the Pro Controller (also Amiibo, but I never use those anyway!). Everything else, the Elite Controller is miles ahead! (Edit: Oh, and there is also price obviously - yes, Xbox Elite + Brook is also a million times more expensive! But worth it to me!)

Don't get me wrong, the Pro Controller is a great controller, and it's actually my second favourite controller (also by a large margin)! But it's not even in the same ballpark as the Elite Controller, sorry!

          • @caprimulgus: True, but the elite is $100 more than the switch, right? I agree the elite would be better. Just not for the price though.

            • @J6: Yeah, plus the cost of the Brook X One Adapter (only one that adds motion controls to Xbox controllers)…not a cheap option by any means!! :)

I've actually never been much of a fan of the Elite controller, I just seem to prefer my standard Xbox One controller to be honest. Might be an unpopular opinion, but the Xbox One controller has the best D-pad (I prefer clicky over mushy), and the best triggers.

Probably because I play with my Xbox One controllers every day but only try the Elite every now and then when at my friends'. Clearly the Switch Pro controller is modelled off the Xbox One controller. For some reason I feel that the bigger buttons are very "Nintendo-esque". It's far better than the Joy-cons that's for sure.

Waiting for the Super Famicom version. I'm surprised it doesn't already exist.

      The… SF30?

      • There's no Super Famicom style for these new Pro+ controllers.

        • +1

Ah gotcha, I'm surprised in that case too

@OkayFray: Yeah you need to manually open up and do a custom mod if you want the classic colours. There's some Image and youtube guides out there. The problem is that a lot of buttons that you can buy off ebay or aliexpress aren't convex and feel a little off.
I actually cannablized by old SF30 Pro for its buttons, and replaced them with some cheapo online bought ones.

I'm not sure how much you paid for them, but I reckon you could probably get some broken SNES controllers (the real thing) off eBay or Gumtree for not too much and get the buttons from them. They actually fit from memory.

              • @p1 ama: Yeah that was my first thought, went through my cupboards looking for my old snes that I was certain I still had kicking around. Must have went to my brother or another relative decades ago though =(

I reckon they're a hell of a lot easier to pry open and salvage too!

                • @Stoibs: I know 8bitdo have a DIY conversion kit they send out for original controllers but there is sadly no snes one available, pity.
I had a bit of a 'deprived childhood' and wasn't allowed one so I only played on my friends. I'm not enough of a purist to know the old school feeling of the OG controller. So the SF30 pro does the trick just fine for me.
It's interesting playing the snes app on switch with the SF30 pro. I've always struggled trying to play snes games in an emulator, now they just feel right.

The bluetooth upgrade? They have it for the SNES controller, I'm using one with a Super Famicom controller currently.

                    • @smartazz104: Oh for real? I saw the original dogbone available but it didn't seem to have snes design. Glad to be wrong about that

The conversion kits are cool, but the one downside they have is that the charging port is a very small barrel-style connector which is just really easily bent and breaks too easily.

(Not to mention that they're basically the price of an SN30/SF30, so obviously I'd just rather go with that, but I get that some people like the feel of the OG controllers).

@Stoibs: Thanks for this picture - I'm genuinely surprised how much bigger the Pro Plus model is! Also loving the SNES coloured buttons 😁
