  • It looks interesting but how is this compared with the Proliant.
I don't hear any good thing about Megabuy so I will stay away from this.

    • Why don't you make an order and we will happily surprise you with our ability to exceed expectations.

      • +2

Well I ordered from Mebabuy few weeks ago for the same product and it was the worst customer service I have ever experienced. It says delivery is 1- 3 working days and mine took 8 working days. After numerous phones call to Megabuy, they told me that call the Courier (Courier Please) instead. And 'Julie' the sale assistant refused to transfer me to her supervisor to make a complaint and she told me that her job. Moreover, I'm still waiting for an explanation.

        • Atleast they got the 'suprise' part of their promise right. Well, not in a positive way but you get the idea.

    • Well I got my HP MicroServer from them and had no issues… =]

That being said, the only reason I'd advise getting this over the HP Micro would be if you actually wanted WHS.. The Micro has everything over this - better CPU, more drive bays.

Then again, this thing looks pretty damn small….. Hmmmmm.

Against the other server (that we are all waiting on!), this doesnt compare.

Neo vs Atom CPU (Neo better)
      1Gig of DDR3 RAM vs DDR2 (3 better)

Ok it's got Windows Server and a bigger Hard Drive, but I'd take the Proliant every time. The above tower doesnt have the ability to hold up to 4 drives like the Proliant. Mind you, very hard to find the Proliant at $200…. even when you order it and get confirmation from HP ;).

      • +2

A lot more difference than that! It is a bit silly to compare.
Am I right that this one does not even have a console?

Only worth considering if you really want WHS.

    • Proliant is a Business Server based, and this is a consumer Home Server. I didnt have any issues with my last order from Megabuy's

  • +1

    $15.95 delivery to Brisbane

  • I can't see this being able to transcode, this is key for any good mediaserver especially if you use wifi or bluray sourced content

    • The EX490 which is available at http://www.megabuy.com.au/hp-ex490-mediasmart-server-fl704aa… is often bought and then the CPU is upgraded to a high end dual core model.

      • However the LX197 is suitable for a hub which can even be accessed outside of home, for media if transcoding isn't required.

  • Good deal! And Megabuy is a good company :)

  • Windows Home Server v1 or Windows Home Server 2011?

    • v1. Sadly, HP isn't releasing any WHS 2011 products.

  • Wait… Is there no way to plug a monitor up to this?? Strange indeed!

    • I would also like to know this. Is it just a web management interface for it?

      • Well if WHS is already installed, you can manage it via remote desktop… But when it comes time to reinstall, or if the network screws up, having a console is kind of handy. :S

  • This is a good deal, no doubt but, yes, the but! This doesn't beat the last HP Micro Server N36L deal I missed by a few minutes and the fact that this machine can only have USB 2.0 addon storage is a downer…I'll be honest I put the request at work for the HP Micro Server N36L and it was approved, missed it, money is there, so I went and bought this one x 2 instead, the positive is I can test drive Windows Home Server, probably replacing it with FreeNas, we will see.

  • isn't WHS available on Dreamspark anyways?

    • +1

I had a quick look into that… didn't know about Dreamspark, Win2k3 Server is.. but couldn't see WHS.

I couldn't see Australia on the list, is there a registered OzBargain High or something on there?

  • Staticice lists greenboxit.com.au with $196.90

    • +1

Not in stock (and only has 640gb hard drive).

  • This is more like NAS box, is hard to compare to HP MicroServer since this LX197 comes with Windows Home Server already, for people who look for this, is not a bad deal though. Although is not super bargain since it doesn't have lots of storage space.

  • "Windows Home Server OS pre installed" Assume v2008r2?

Does this mean no installation disc? If not is there ability to create a backup if OS ever needs reinstalling?

And can't even find out what video card chipset/model is used in these machines.

As people have said herre these machines have very limited upgrade potential since there is only room for 1 HDD, 1 memory slot, no otical drive bay, use older DDR2 memory and have no expansion card slots.

    • USB Install, if you google there is alot of instructions out there on how to make auto-install windows to install on these type of machines.
