What’s this Amazom place you speak of?

    • +5

The place that has "1x Passice Speaker"

      • -1

I don't know what they are but they must be better than passive speakers, I can't abide a big speaker that let's the little guys do all the hard work.

      • +1

No deal. I'll buy it only if it had 1 x actice speaker as well.

      • and a 13-inch tweeter!

  • Excellent, was in the market for this, thanks!

  • Are these better than say a ~$300 soundbar for a tv?

    • anything has got to be better than tv onboard sound and this is cheap - whats the sound quality like?

      • I got these 2 OZB listings ago for same price. They are outstanding. I had only the TV sound beforehand and have now run the optic out to these speakers.

The difference is what you'd expect - night and day. The footy is much, much more exciting. movies and shows are also much better. For a hungie, I'd highly recommend if you are going from tv to speakers. And with the Bluetooth you can easily stream your music from your phone and blast away the weekend!

There are also the other connection options. The remote is good. the only thing is I forget to turn off the speakers when not in use - but it doesn't seem to hurt….

        • Is there a standby function? Or Auto off?

          • @AtomuKirin: Not sure to be honest, I just don't worry about it - possibly I should….

    • +3

if all you want to do is watch TV/movies a 2.0 speaker setup is not exactly ideal (a centre channel goes a long way) - but a soundbar isn't ideal for anything except being discreet, so yeah, better off with these IMO, especially at a third of the price. Not the last word on home audio or anything obviously, but you're really getting quite a lot for your money here.

      • -2

a soundbar isn't ideal for anything except being discreet

        Nonsense

        • Indeed, virtual surround sans headphones has come a long way in the past few years. It's interesting what would be better … I'd guess the soundbar.

        • Agreed, I have very good PC speakers that are amazing for music and destroy my soundbar for music. Meanwhile my soundbar utterly demolishes the music speakers when it comes to movies and tv.

          • @900dollaridoos: What sound bar and pc speakers you got?

            • @nfr: Sonos PlayBar + 2x Symfonisk Lamps for the rears.

              • +3

                @fatal: you didn't get that for $300…

      • If the speakers are full range you shouldn’t have any problems with dialogue.

        • the clarity of the dialogue is rarely the issue, it's the fact the centre image of a 2 channel setup will drift to the left or right along with your seating position (i.e. whenever there's more than one person watching). The purpose of the centre channel is to make sure all the dialogue is coming from the screen position because that's where the people talking are.

the closer the speakers are together the less of an issue it'll be though. But if you have then seperated for an optimal soundstage for music you're probably going to notice it.

          • @diamondd: I’d put them on either side of t he screen with a bit of room to breath.

          • +1

@diamondd: the actual reason that TV/movies suffer from a 2-channel setup is because the voices are sent to the center channel, which, if your TV is not downmixing the 5.1 to stereo, will go to a channel that does not exist on your setup.

if you have the 5.1 downmixing to stereo, that centre channel is then split evenly across the left/right speakers (along with everything else)

            • @Laserface: Yes if listening through a stereo setup, the digital audio should always be set to ‘PCM stereo’.
The setting should be in your source, either your Streaming box / DVD player or TV (in the case of DVD / Bluray you may have to set it as default in the Player settings, or choose it from the DVD’s menu).

The results of listening to digital audio in ‘5.1 surround’ through a stereo setup will always be compromised.

‘Down-mixing’ 5.1 to stereo (making the TV receive 5.1 & spit out PCM stereo) can also cause issues, what you want is to choose the ‘PCM stereo’ audio from the source (all sources should have both stereo & 5.1 / 7.1 surround audio track options).

I have just got these and very impressed…great speaker…paid $129…good price.

  • This quickly became OZB favourite speakers.

  • How would these compare to a stereo pair of OG Echo Plus’?

  • Could these pair with an Xbox directly?

    • +5

Will answer my own question - looks like they have an optical input - so that is doable.

  • is this for a single speaker or a pair?

    • +1

      99% sure its a pair

  • +1

Great sound quality. Comes with cables and everything, even optical. Really impressed with mine. Got them paired to a Google home mini.

    • With Bluetooth pairing to your Google mini, when playing music do you control the volume via Google mini by telling it to lower/increase volume or via the speaker's remote only?

      • +1

Either works. Of course one is limited by the other; if you increase volume with the remote, the google home's volume does not change. But there is some flexibility before you have to increase/decrease the volume of either to get what you want.

    • How do you pair with it with GH Mini?

      • Aux or Bluetooth

        • +1

Wow. I've been using GHs and I never thought this was possible. Thanks!

        • Aux? There's no Aux on my google home mini?

And Bluetooth? I thought it was running off wifi?

          • +1

@Jackson: See my link below Jackson.

          • +1

@Jackson: They run of wifi but can pair another speaker over Bluetooth

In the google home app, when you scroll down a bit in the google mini's settings, theres a 'paired bluetooth' devices setting

        • +1

There is no Aux. Bluetooth only. Was introduced as an option last year.

Please note that when you turn the speakers on, the Google Home may not automatically connect. You may have to issue the command "hey Google, connect bluetooth". It can then take a little while (20 seconds or so) before it starts to play through the speakers.

          • @Make it so: wow, I didn't even know there was a touch volume control on mine. I thought it must be voice only.

        • Sorry I was thinking of my echo dot

Just auto pilot and clicked buy ..

    Here is a review

  • Can these be connected to an amp?

    • No, these are active

      • How about that passice speaker?

  • Have had my pair for ~12 months now and love them. Hooked up to my PC and PS4 and ability for bluetooth is also great. Nice full sound for the price.

  • Couple of questions…

How is the audio delay when pairing over Bluetooth with a TV?
Does the remote volume change both speakers at the same time?

    • I have the r1700db's (the model up) and tried connecting over bluetooth to my TV (LG C7 OLED) and the audio delay was very noticeable.
