Telstra Fixed Broadband, Unlim Data & Calls $90/Mth (Month to Month), $216 Modem + $300 Gift Card (New Customers) @ JB Hi-Fi

130

I was in store today at JB and they have a deal I can't find advertised where you pay $90 a month for unlimited data month/month and you get a $300 gift voucher and a modem. If you cancel you need to pay $216 for the modem plus the first month.

Let me know if this is a good deal

It says fixed broadband on the screen. Under the $300 gift card.

  • Don't you need to pay for the modem regardless ?

  • I'm not sure which modem is included but JB said it is valued at $400. It uses 4gx or something

    • I'm assuming this is NBN/Cable, as the biggest mobile broadband plan Telstra offers is 100GB for $75 month to month, no unlimited data offering there. The modem they are giving might be a model that does VDSL / Fibre while also using 4GX as a backup or failover. most likely the Telstra Smart Modem gen 2

This is the critical information summary for Telstra's $90/mth casual month by month internet plan
      https://www.telstra.com.au/help/critical-information-summari…

    • Probably Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 with 4G backup. Not very good and not worth $400. 4G speeds restricted to 6/1.

      • Can Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 be set up to accept other service provider and backup?
say the vodafone offering, can I still use as the modem/4G backup for that offering?

        • I don't think it's possible to use a non-telstra sim in the modem. I however have a RT-AC68U connected to the Telstra modem and use 4G backup on the RT-AC68U via a 4G dongle

    • It’s a custom Telstra Huawei modem router

      • God damn, not Huawei!

I have the 2nd Generation Telstra Smart modem.

Smh, if only I knew, I would have told Telstra to stick it.

  • If you can byo modem this would be a great deal

    • That and 100/40 instead of presumably their default 50/20

  • Modem is "free" on the condition you are with them for 24 months. Repayment is $9/month which adds up to $216 total cost.

    • That kills it. Especially given Telstra modems are virtually given away second hand.

      • I had Telstra cable and had to transition to the nbn. After looking around for plans (I needed home phone and net) the Telstra chat sales representative said that the modem was free of charge with no repayment for early cancelation for transitioning customers, but was mandatory for new customers. Try and push for added speed boost for free or for $15 instead of $30 and see if you can worm your way out of a modem.

Otherwise, there are heaps of better standalone NBN deals if you don't need a home phone :) Superloop, Aussie broadband, and maybe Vodafone and Kogan are what I've seen as good value and service for money.

        • I tried multiple times for the speed boost, despite having 3 mobiles with them they wouldn't budge. Stuck with Aussie BB who I can't fault though…

          • @scuderiarmani: Threaten to move your 3 mobiles elsewhere, probably your best bet. But +1 for not being able to fault ABB, they're great.

            • @MitchyD1989: I threatened to… Nothing. The luck of the draw with them is extremely annoying.

            • @MitchyD1989: Unless you have a technical issue, then you find ABB is vastly understaffed and the staff they have lack experience/knowledge. It’s growing pains time for ABB. I left because their service was up and down constantly for us and they could not get to the bottom of it in 6 months. Moved to Tangerine and not an issue with all same hardware.

@scuderiarmani: I rang Telstra about something else, and while there, I was offered free speed boost by one sales reps (this was a week or two ago).

She said that she's only mentioning this because they are authorised to offer this discount now ($30 value).

I am also on HFC cable 100 Mbps, and I'm not keen on switching to the NBN, because it will cost me just over $30 for the unlimited Telstra NBN plan at 100 Mbps.

And I'd get slower speed too. Telstra's average peak hour speeds are around 87 Mbps I think (down from 91-93 over the previous few months).

So I think Telstra must offer the speed if not free, then heavily discounted, to have any chance of retaining customers switching over from HFC cable to NBN over HFC.

Now, a few days later, I rang Telstra to see if this is a current offer available to all Telstra HFC cable users, or whether it was targeted at me (to get me to switch to the NBN with them I guess).

The second sales rep was a rude and pushy ahole.

I kept asking if he could confirm that the free speed boost was an "official" (but unadvertised) Telstra promotion, because I told him that I wanted to post it in an online forum.

After several attempts at trying to sell me stuff I don't need he realised I was not ready to buy anything or switch at this stage (just as I have been telling him from the start) and that I just wanted a confirmation.

He told me that next time it would be best if I didn't ring them with such questions, because I was wasting not only my time, but theirs too.

Then he hung up on me!

But, not before he confirmed that Telstra reps are indeed authorised now (and I know for a fact that previously they weren't) to give a 50% discount on the speed boost, but not for free?!

I think I coùld get the speed boost for free, because I wrote down the first sales rep's name, and reference number (which I had to ask for) but she was happy to send it to me in writing.

So, I think it's worth keeping on trying over and over, until you get a decent sales rep who will give it to you for free.

I explained my conversations with the sales reps in more detail, in another thread

            • @BooYa: Are you talking about this which has been around for the last 6 months?

              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/448023

              • @1jwoz: No mate (although I did have to double check this before I posted that deal, because they are very similar).

I got the speed boost in that link you provided a few months ago (I think every one on the Telstra HFC cable with unlimited downloads on the 50 Mbps plan got that).

The one I was offered (the deal I posted) is different, because I would have had to migrate to Telstra's NBN over HFC to get that.

It's a free speed boost from Telstra's standard 50 to 100 Mbps on the unlimited plan, for existing Telstra HFC Cable customers only, who choose to migrate to Telstra's NBN over HFC.

If that makes any sense lol. I've been up all night, so my thinking is not as clear as it should be.

                • @BooYa: Superloop have 100/40 for $70 for 6 months why would you pay Telstra $90 for the same thing?

  • So this is a phone plan and broadband (not NBN) package?

  • +3

A great deal on NBN50? Hardly

  • Is this "unlimited" data where you get throttled to 1.5mbps after a certain limit like Telstra mobile plans?

EDIT: nvm thought this was Fixed Wireless style, rather than just NBN.

    Telstra Fixed Broadband

I have their Broken one… Might check this out. thanks…

    • Have you tried turning it off and on again?

  • I may be a dumbass but … is 'fixed broadband" just NBN?

  • What if I don't want the modem? Do I still have to pay that $216?

    • Of course…

  • +2

That’s standard price. The only thing you get extra is the JB gift card.

  • If you wish to cancel the plan you can return the modem and not continue to pay the $216 - stated on telstra website

    • Everywhere I read suggests you need to pay out the Modem

  • -2

    Still a good deal .
If you cancel day 1 pro rate you will probably get $300 gift card for $220ish

Sell the model on eBay for $150

    • +3

Nobody is going to pay that much for the modem.

  • ask them if they can remove the modem. It was doable when I checked last time.

  • No mention of speed. 25/5?

  • +1

This is way better than last time free google mini. $300 GC is awesome deal

  • Confirmed you can not return the modem if you cancel. It’s paid off over 24 months, otherwise $220 odd.

  • +2

I signed up today without the modem. Told the chat staff had my own. So I can cancel anytime without fee. Got the gift card within 20 minutes of sign up. I have fttp. Currently with superloop.

    • hi, i wondering chat staff u talk about is telstra online chat or the jb hifi ? as i currently in melbourne but want to sign up for my home in hobart :( thanks

      • I signed up in the jbhifi store.

  • Can I use my google wifi as a router for an HFC connection with Telstra (ie. plug it directly into the Arris NBN modem thing)?
