They're not very good for you. It acts like a caste and prevents muscles from working to maintain posture.

      • Ignorant comment. This helps protect your back as long as you use it properly (Swell your belly / abs out like you're doing your best Santa impression).

        • I wouldn't say it is an ignorant comment - but it is only half the story.

The problem is that most can pull more than their core can handle.

Use a belt if you can pull/squat harder than you can handle in your core and you can't be bothered to fix that up.

The other option is to work on that. You could very well injure yourself getting that type of experimentation, though. It's a baptism of fire. You have to become extremely close with what is happening.

If you get to the point where your core is up there with your pull/squat (ie, you no belt on max lifts), you'll eventually find that a belt doesn't really help for you any more - because you no longer swell the belly and abs out.

It's no big deal, either way. Who is going to pat me on the back for no belting? Basically nobody. It's just less equipment I have to concern myself with.

This is based on experience, by the way. I do not use a belt. I get nothing from a belt.

With that logic, these types of belts are sub-par at best.

You are far better off spending $100 and buying a proper lifting belt that has more surface area for your abs to create abdominal pressure.

Personally wouldn't recommend these belts to anybody, most people using them in the gym don't even know what abdominal pressure is as they cat-back up a 100kg deadlift, sigh.
