Beware, when phone is screen locked, no Led notification, only vibration (screen doesnt turn on either)

      is this facts ?

      • +2

Do I need to point out that I have the phone?

        • -1

you may not know how to use it though; i think it's a fair question to ask the community …

          • +1

@tempura: That's why I asked for a work around just in case someone has correct solution. I didn't neg you though.

      • My screen turns on for notifications

      • My screen turns on for mine

    • i used aodnotify for my s10+. not sure if it works for a20

      • your s10+ lacks of notif features ?

        • Yep. It is running the similar software after all

          • @18: you jokin; S10+ vs A20 running same software ???

            • +1

@tempura: They're both using one ui. Of course there are some differences in terms of features, but the underlying mechanics would be the same.

            • +1

@tempura: are you 50? why are you so clueless

      • +1

        No it doesn't unfortunately.

  • Is it possible to price match at Big W Online? Because then you could stack it with this offer to get it for $139: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/492458

  • No dual Sim no deal. Means you'll be stuck porting your number to different providers when cheap deals come around and only once to that provider. Whereas with dual Sim you'll be able to get unlimited cheap deals with the same provider as it'll be new service with new number each time.

    • No dual Sim for budget and mid range Samsung phones for Australia.

    • Also need to consider what provider you leave your main number on - a lot of them cancel it if you don't recharge for 30 days (Lebara)

    • Dual sim = no NFC and no B28 for most phones. No thanks.

  • This or nokia 3.2? I have that latter which currently rates as just "good enough"

  • What is the Australian model number? Does it have all Aussie network bands covered ? This suggests the Canadian model has Band 28.

    https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_a20-9640.php

A smaller version would be great (under 6").

  • +1

Price matched at Big W Seaford SA. The Australia Post store in the same centre wasnt corporate so didnt stock phones. Saved a trip to another Shopping Centre.

  • Honestly wouldn't buy it. GPS is extremely poor. Takes more than 15 minutes to lock.

    • Even with Wifi enabled?

      • +1

Yes I tried that, didn't make any noticible difference. I note that they recently patched the GPS issue on the A30 but the A20 seems to be continuing to have issues. Not sure if all units are affected.

        • +1

Id pull the trigger if it werent for these GPS issues

        • It was fixed. What's your version and kernel no.?

    • +2

Ive used for 2 weeks now, no issue so far with gps.

    • Are you on high accuracy? Wifi and Bluetooth on?

I've got the unlocked dual sim version from ebay and works just fine.

  • +1

Anyone having issues with Wi-Fi on theirs? I had to buy one as an emergency phone in NZ - it doesn't drop out of Wi-Fi but more the network I'm connected to stops working. Flight mode on and then off again seems to fix it. Also only connects to 2.4GHz.

    • +1

I've had that issue with the network showing Emergency Calls only. A restart fixed the issue temporarily. I've updated to the October security patch which apparently is also a stability update so hopefully it doesn't happen again.

    • 2.4GHz works fine.

      The A20 doesn't support 5GHz.

  • Purchased one last deal. It regularly drops calls mid-conversation and the display usually stays on when held to the ear. I've taken it to a Samsung shop twice and they've played with settings and resetting and told me to test it further.

  • Aus post refused to sell it to me at that price instore

    • +2

      just purchased from aus post.
What i did was called their customer service and told them if any of my near store had stock since i need it asap.
They called local store and set aside one for me.
Then went to local post office and got the item.
      i hope this helps

      • +2

Hey thanks for the help! I called up customer service and explained what happened and they called the store and told them to sell it to me for that price and they were in the wrong

        • +2

That's it. Glad to be of help.

    • +1

Walked in, asked for one, scanned at $159 (and displayed as so), paid and walked out.

It's fresh stock and Vodafone is showing $50 to unlock.

      Will try other unlock methods.

      • yeah not sure why the store was refusing to sell it to me, i even showed them the price online.

I saw the unlock method that was posted but on the website itself it says the unlock method wont work if the phone is secured by Knox, which this phone is.

  • +1

Quick question. Will I be able to use this phone freely if I unlock it and then take it overseas? Can update after unlocking freely?

  • Is this loaded with vodafone junk as i plan on unlocking for Boost?

    • Nah, just Samsung junk.

No I don't want the McAfee spam for the last time. Serious, it just keeps on bugging you bugging you bugging you.

    • I am even surprised you can even delete almost every junk app (Vodafone, Samsung, Google) rather than just disable. Even flagship devices does not offer that. 10/10 in terms of cleanliness and free of junk.

  • Does this come with the $30 prepaid sim?

    • +1

      Yes

  • Do online orders include $30 Sim? In store stock says $30 Sim in box.

    • Yes

  • +1

    OW $151.05 thanks

    • +1

      Receipt or it didnt happen.

      • +2

Just for you brother lol https://ibb.co/N9njXGP

        • Nice

        • +1

Well done and your receipt might help some, but be prepared for a possible disappointment as not all will get as lucky as you and the earlier commentor here.

        • +1

Probably some noob price matched it. Otherwise they also scan the IMEI on the receipt.

        • can you upload a proper full photo of the receipt?

        • It is not available anymore, can you please upload it again?

  • +1

    This is locked to Vodafone.

    • +1

Yes, and unless you get lucky with older stock, most likely no free unlock if stores sold out on last sale.

      • +2

Checked a couple stores today - imeis with 19 and 20, not looking good for old stock.

        • +3

The Sam Unlock tool now does work with the newer bootloaders. Helped a colleague unlock one with a 20xx IMEI and U2 bootloader yesterday

        • What do you mean by this are you saying if imes is certain numbers it can be unlocked free? If so what should I check?

          • @bwatt72: IMEIs are of the form: 356776/10/xxxxxx/y. The y is important as vodafone does unlocking for free after 12 months and half price after 6 months - the lower that number is the more likely you are to get a free unlock out of voda.

Essentially if you buy one of these phones you try unlock it via voda website, it may be old enough to be free. If not, use the fonefunshop method for ~$6 instead of paying voda ~$30-60.

When these phones are available at a good price in store people always used to look for ones that would be free to unlock - I never saw one old enough and they are probably all gone now.

            • @Wilburre: My y number is high and tried enter imei on site and asks for payment so not free, I have seen fonefunshop but looks complicated and don't fancy paying vodaphone that prices im on boost and idea of getting this deal was being cheap and my other phone dying in me so use this until I can upgrade again. I had wife pick it up for me I was not aware there where ones with lower numbers to look out for but most likely there not be now. But Vodafone should not be able to unlock free with older numbers and charge with newer numbers this is unfair.
I tried going on live chat to give that a crack but asks for phone number and pin as I have mine in box still I believe number will be on box but where do I get a pin from? Just wanted to try my luck with chat

              • @bwatt72: It sounds like they are asking for the pin and phone number of the included sim which you won't get without opening the box. There isn't much point to not opening the box as most stores don't accept returns on prepaid mobiles, you'd have to check Australia Posts return policy.

                • @Wilburre: Don't accept return phones? Never knew this, was not auspost though but if it's in box not open why would they not? I can understand if it's opened and wanted to return as I'm boost I got this to unlock and obviously wanted to try free option first.

                  • @bwatt72: you just have to check where ever you bought it from - there's nothing wrong with it so you would be doing a change of mind return - i remember a lot of stores wouldn't do prepaid mobiles in the past, maybe that's changed. do some research for your situation.

  • DOn't know much about Samsung, but how does this compare to a S8? Looking online the S8 is 2 years older but has a 2 generation newer processor so I assume the S8 is the better/faster phone?

    • +1

      Much faster.

    • +2

Probably night and day difference in some things, buy this phone does admirably if you aren't a gamer or have some other intensive apps. It's probably the best trade off phone for this money I have ever seen, it's got it where it counts for the average user

    • +2

There is a fair bit in common here, but the SG8+ is a closer comparison, same as SG8 just larger screen and battery.

If the S8/+ has been updated to latest OS update they should both be running Android Pie/9 with One Ui, but on the A20 slightly stripped down with a few features missing.

As the price for a new SG8/+ is still double to triple the price new, that as well as the larger 6.4" screen and battery as well as having a wide angle camera lens are big pluses for the A20. If your happy to go second hand or refurb then the gap is only around $140-$250 more, but then the battery becomes even more of a concernthe .

Yes, the CPU as well as 1GB ram and double the storage are all great and will make the S8/+ run a bit smoother and faster, but for many getting the A20, helped along by lower res screen fast enough. The screen is also nicer on the SG8/+ with more pixels, curved side edges, but because the A20 still has nice Amoled screen and for some they prefer the flat screen and it's larger, so some are happy with that.

Then software updates will be similar, with the A20 just like the SG8 most likely staying on Pie and both getting some security updates for the next 12 months or so. Getting 2 yrs local warranty on the A20 is good too which is the same if getting a local SG8/+ new, but not for a second hand/refurb/grey stock.

  • Hi Guys:

I was wondering, if this vodafone locked phone supports Lebara or Kogan SIM card?

    Thanks

    • +4

      Yes it does.

    • Yes it does

  • Grabbed one of these today, used the fonefunshop unlock as per the link before. Windows detected it as a trojan, but after checking it in VirusTotal it looks like it isn't and is just one of those heuristic-based detections: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/ac0e3030c95fd10565e94271…

    • +4

After using it for a bit, I've experienced no lag - I've successfully run up 2 Pokemon Go clients by downloading from both Galaxy Store and Play Store. Then putting them in split screen.

Looks like a GREAT second phone for any Pokemon players!

      • Do you know if yours is an 25xx IMEI and U2 bootloader ?

  • -1

    Bought one today, it’s locked.
Anyone has a leftover credit out of 3 to unlock the phone if someone an share please?
Thanks 😊 hoping to have it unlocked as gifting it to my dad!

    IMEI starts with 356…

    • +2

It’s 3 credits for 1 unlock so there would be no left over credits

      • Thanks for the clarification, I took it other way and thought of bargain 😛
Paid to Fonefunshop few hours back already but haven’t received the key yet!!!
How long did it take for you guys?
And is their Server unlock tool safe as my Win 10 detects Trojan Virus in it?
        Thanks

        • yes its safe, see my other post explaining why your antivirus triggered
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/492648?page=1#comment-8119…

Also please remember we are in the UK, so the time difference is a factor, you guys are ordering your credits while we sleep here, and we process all orders in the morning, so please have a little patience :)

        • I got mine in less than an hour but I ordered late at night so its in the middle of the workday for those guys.

    • It cost me $6 to buy the 3 credits… definitely cheaper than $50 from VODAFONE

      • With fonefunshop, does the PC need to be connected to their fonefunshop server to Unlock ?

        What is the process ?

        • yeah same question as asked By andy 99 if somebody could shed some light on the process with Fonefunshop that will be greatly appreciated…cheers in advance oz fellas…

        • +2

So here is what I did
          1. Followed the Samsung unlock tool link that tshepherd posted earlier in the post.
          2. Purchased the Samsung unlock tool from fonefunshop (this was about 9:30am on Friday) note: I payed with PayPal if that helps anyone
          3. Turned off my AV
          4. Downloaded both the Samsung unlock tool and the Samsung usb drivers.
          5. Installed the usb drivers
          6. Removed ALL security (pin, biometric and facial) from my Samsung
          7. Enabled developer mode and usb debug mode on my phone
          8. Removed my sim card, rebooted phone and ensured that the Knox said “secured” and not triggered note: my phone was not rooted
          9. Once the email arrived from the fonefunshop, I opened the Samsung unlock tool exe, entered the license code (towards bottom of program window) and clicked activate license. The tool will then connect to their server and you will see 3 credits be added to your tool.
          10. Connected my phone via usb c cable direct to computer (don’t plug into a dock)
          11. Ran the tool from button on the right of software window (can’t remember what the button is but it is directly located above the abd one)
          12. Clicked all the allow prompts that appeared on my phone.
          13. A few mins into the process your phone should restart. NOTE: mine didn’t and I reran the process from the beginning again.
          14. On the second attempt, the phone when through its reboot process.
          15. Once the software said done (you will see the comments in the main window in the tool) I unplugged the phone, inserted a Telstra sim
          16. Turned on the phone and it asked for the unlock code. I entered 00000000 and then it went past that screen and my phone was unlocked.

NOTE: the 3 credits will disappear ONLY if the unlocking was successful.

          Hope this helps

          • @sharka: I had exactly the same experience with the tool. Only thing I did differently was insert a telstra sim before turning off the phone to begin the process to ensure it needed to be unlocked (and of course it did).
