Samsung Omnia 7 or Motorola Milestone 2 Free on Optus $29 CAP for 12 Month Contract

400

Windows Phone 7 or Android, both top of the line (or second top) handsets.
Absolute bargain on a 12 month only contract!

Omnia 7 is Samsung's only Win 7 Phone as yet, therefore top of the line by default.
Milestone 2 has only recently been outed as their top of the line handset by the Atrix.

Milestone 2 has a hardware keyboard.

  • looks good. are any compatible with the 850mhz next g network? might be crazy/silly idea but would paying out the contract be cheaper than buying phone outright?

    • nope..

  • +3

top of the line my @$$

    • -6

The Omnia is nearly 12 months old - middle-age in phone years - and uses one of the bottom-of-the-line smartphone OSs (don't get me wrong, there's plenty to like about WP7 but it's nowhere near iOS, Android or even WebOS).

But still a bloody good price.

        Post updated for clarity..
These are still very high spec phones and I'm unaware of anything better specced in the Windows Phone 7 market (if you prefer WP7).

WP7 launched late October 2010 so still quite a bit from being 12 months old. In your opinion WP7 is "bottom of the line" but with a range of updates on their way and excellent customer satisfaction numbers, I definitely disagree.

Gen2 hardware is coming out soon, which means the Omnia 7 could be EOL by the end of the year.

Still an amazing price at $348 for the handset itself, the plan thrown in is just a bonus. You can get it unlocked for about $10 from most eBay sellers.

Disclosure: Very satisfied Samsung Focus owner

        • $10 unlock? why?

As far as I know, all optus postpaid phones are unlocked, and all vodafone postpaid phones can be unlocked for free.

        • Sorry - good point, it's that cheap I must have thought it was pre-paid in my head. The Garmin ASUS A50 is also a top deal at $228 over 12 months.

i'll give you 12 month and you can come back and edit this post :)

        • :)
I'll need to be back in more like 3 months!

  • nice! i want a milestone 2 :) anyone using it?

    • -5

      No.

    • Use to work for Motorola. Absolute great fone but a lil weighty

      • I've searched online for the weight of this phone and it appears to be heavier than an iPhone 4?

        Is this correct?

  • +2

by definition, WP7 specced phones have recent hardware, not top of the line dual core cpus but close, and don't confuse the original Omnia with the Omnia 7 which has 1ghz cpu/4" AMOLED lcd/720p video etc

  • milestone 2 or samsung galxy S better? both are on a $29 plan.

    • +1

Galaxy S is 24 month though.

Galaxy S is a great handset (I have one). The hacking community support will continue to keep it a great phone. Wheras the Milestone 2 has a locked bootloader that is severely hampering efforts to produce custom ROMs.
If I were buying it would really be a tough call.. the 12 month contract is VERY tempting and the hardware keyboard of the Milestone is a massive plus to me.

      • +1

I'll make it simple for you. Love really getting to know Android and experimenting? Get Galaxy S.

Don't wanna bother with custom stuff too much? Get the Milestone 2. The locked bootloader won't bother you then. Plus, you get a sweet sweet keyboard with the Droid.

  • milestone 2 using super AMOLED??? typo?

    • i thought so too

    • yeah, I reckon it's LCD and the screen size is 3.7" on other sites.. so there's definitely one thing wrong.

  • +2

both really good phone for that price.
if you want something really easy to use then Windows phone 7 is the go. not the best operating system but this october it will be on par and even better in some regards than all the OSs available.

Great phone, got my milestone 2 from Vodafone by price match this deal.

    • Hi John
Can we price match sumsang too??

      • yes
        you can

        if they have

    • Are you sure vodaphone they can match this deal of 12 months?
      Im after moto milestone2 too.

    • i was just going to ask if we can match this. how'd you match it? store or phone?

    • Optus is the exclusive telecom seller of Omnia 7 in Australia, so unpossible to price match at Voda

    • Hi John, How can u get this deal with vodaphone? as I hv call to vodaphone call center and store, they said just only 24 months contract to get the milestone2 handset, can not match optus.

  • Does anyone know if these deals are for a limited time only? Or untili sold out (although not very likely)~

    • They're Clearance, so I would imagine it's until sold out.

  • If you price in the plan which will cost you 10 dollar from TPG, then the phones come to $228 which is an absolute bargain, and I can live with the shitty Optus network for 12 months. I wish I have not bough that WILDFIRE from unique mobile a month ago.

  • Just a dumb question: are both these phones compatible with Telstra's Next G network? I suppose no but just want to confirm…

And do I connect to Optus's website for software update or Microsoft's website?

    • Not Next G compatible, as per the first question..

I believe Windows Phone Updates are done over the air (ie no websites involved). The updates come straight from MS though, unlike Android updates that go through the Carrier.

      • There is an update for 2.3.4 on the net already, not sure if it will work with this phone.

I have a loan WP7 from telstra when my Desire was broken and I will suggest people to stay away from WP7. Limited free apps and limit things that can be done on the phone.

        • There is no 2.3.x for the Milestone 2 at the moment. Motorola have announced they will be releasing a 2.3.3 for the Milestone in 2011.

Neither phone is a tinkerer/hacker's phone

  • Hey guys in the Samsung Omnia specs it says that is has a front facing camera. I googled and can't find a definite answer. Does it or does it not have a front facing camera?

    • it would appear not, although the product image does appear to have one next to the earpiece…
Win Phone 7 is unable to do video calls, so I guess it was considered unnecessary.
