Osaka is a fun, vibrant city and a great introduction to Japan, close to Nara, Kyoto and only a couple of hours from Tokyo on the Shinkansen in one direction, or Hiroshima and Kobe in the other.

I once got stuck on an island (Aogashima) for two days past my scheduled flight (ferry wouldn't go in fog), finally got to the airport at Hachijō-jima, and ANA was like 'that's fine, here's a new ticket, free". Their customer service is amazing!

I'm already guessing that flights to Japan will be tough to get next year due to Olympics 2020 in July & August

  Almost as hard to get as Tokyo to New Zealand flights this week.

  Aside from dates around the olympics flights throughout the year shouldn't be that bad.
  
  We're seeing a lot of specials and will see even more with Virgin Australia potentially starting flights from Brisbane to Tokyo in March next year.
