Makes for a nice coffee table ornament

  • +11

I got it for $399 from the Microsoft store.
They said I have 3 months to try it out and return it anytime if I find I don't like it

It's really not as bad as everyone seems to post here if you have the correct expectations

I was playing a bit of Hearthstone and watching a YouTube video outputting to a 4k screen at the same time and it ran fine

Think it's a good deal for this price

    • i play Diablo 3 on this on low settings
i would get it if i don't already own one

      • +4

And what exactly is ironic about that ?

        • +1

I dunno, I just say something is ironic whenever there's a slightly funny situation.

      • +4

An app, not the full desktop version. Of course it can, they optimised it for the OS and limitations…

      • +1

But in this video, this guy is using photoshop?
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXpb9X8kcRM

        • I guess technically he’s using it, after it finally loads.

      • Is that the full version of Photoshop, or one designed for IOS?
A friend of mine who uses Photoshop on IOS, said you need an iPad Pro for it to run properly.

        • I got iPad Pro. I don’t know how it works on regular iPad.

    • -1

Just as an aside, playing YT videos doesn't really use cpu, The work is done on a dedicated chip, which is why laptop/phone makers always rate battery time with playing videos, rather than anything that uses cpu. Your example is not good as far as showing how much horsepower the computer has, but it is good if that's what you normally do. Works just fine for you

If you're looking at this, maybe consider the Surface 3 somebody mentioned in the JB Hi-Fi thread. It's $199 refurbished with the type cover so add an extra dollar somewhere to get the $20 off $200 deal. Bought it yesterday so no clue if it's any good but for $180 it might be worth a shot…

    • +1

      surface 3 is very slow

      • True, but for a 2nd or 3rd machine it should be sufficient. Haven't gotten mine yet so can't say.

        • Yeah I have a surface 1 pro with an i5 and find it perfect as a second machine for travelling with. Really depends on your needs but it still does well in most daily tasks

          • +1

@Sunproof: pro is much quicker than a surface 3 which is atom based
I have had most surface versions found 3 very painfully slow

          • @Sunproof: The keyboards compared to the later models are bad. The weight/size isn't great. Can't realy sit on your lap/anywhere other than a table with the unadjustable kickstand.
Doesn't really function as a tablet as it's too heavy. For a good price, might be worth it.. but wouldn't actively seek/reccomend one. The PC it's self is fine, with a snappy ssd, high res? (on a small screeen) - just many odd design flaws/quirks that got ironed out in later revisions. One note with the touch screen was cool.

      • +1

True, but for someone that has a need for a cheap windows device it's quite usable..

For the last 3 years I've been using slower less capable devices while traveling, a 8" Chuwi piece of crap tablet, and a Lenovo Miix 320 10" 2in1, sure they're not super computers but they're fine for mapping, surfing, watching vids, and such… The Surface 3 is a nice little upgrade over these… and 5v-USB charging is a must-have for me…

The 32gb drive was the main issue with the devices I've been using, win updates were always an issue due to lack of space, the 64gb in the Surface 3 should well and truly fix that issue…

Keep your expectations in check and the Surface 3 will be fine… (don't expect to play 4k or HEVC vids smoothly or such)

Here's the Surface 3 chat in the JB thread:

  • Looking to upgrade from a Nexus 10…
    would i notice much improvement?

    • +1

don't buy this if you are looking to replace your Nexus 10
the surface go isn't really a tablet

    • -3

      Not sure if trolling or….

      • you talking to me or bostos?
If me, i am serious.. i'm looking for a new tablet for $400 or less

        • I had the exact same thought. Looking to update from a Nexus 10.

It's hard to find replacement device when the people reviewing them have strange and unrealistic needs.

        • +1

The Surface go runs full Windows 10 OS
It is handy if you need it to run desktop mode as well as tablet mode is also available.
It can install the Windows desktop apps (aka win32 apps), or you can install app from the Windows store app

If the apps you normally use are available on the windows store then definitely go for it. Just remember this is not Android and the apps selection are different

  • +10

Would this be able to handle adobe Lightroom?

    • +5

I truly would like to know why I was negged…

      • me too according to the googles it should be decent for it.

        • Yes apparently there are people that says it's ok and others advise not to expect too much..

          • @ets27: Almost like it depends on the size and quantity of photographs you’re gonna be editing. Editing 600 CR2 files vs playing around with 30 medium sized jpegs you took of the dog in the arvo.

            • @Blitz001: yes, I think that it is probably worth spending more for a better 2 in 1

      • +7

+1 for you to make it 0.

    • ya know, I used to play that on those atom netbooks. It ran. I was also an idiot.

  • +13

While this may be that $1 cheaper than JB, i'd personally probably pay the extra $ because up here in Darwin, I wouldn't trust HN warranty service. Also, wasn't Harvey advocating the whole, import GST because as Aussies we should buy local even if its like half the price to get it shipped internationally? like super greedy person, just cause we don't like his over priced products and furniture.

  • eMMC memory is bad. I hate the write speed for app and software updates on my Pixel 3a, this including using google camera app.

    • I have a work colleague that thought the same thing. He put a 128GB Samsung EVO in it. He's impressed with it so far.

  • Hi guys I was looking at getting something like this for Uni. Fits my budget which is limited and want something portable like this with the detachable screen/keyboard. I only have pretty basic requirements software wise and part of my access I get to download the Office 2016 suite. Will this run that OK? And can USB C transfer the image to a monitor with a suitable adapter? Seems perfect for me if so.

    • +1

It’s quite perfect then, if that is all you need. (When I do research I have 20+PDFs open, 10 docs open and 20 chrome tabs, it’s not usable to me)

    • +1

You still have to stump up for the type cover.

  • -2

wasn't Harvey advocating the whole, import GST

Yes but so was the Chamber of Commerce and Industry on behalf of all Australian retailers.

This is the fault of everybody who voted for the Labor Party and the Liberal Party. These are parties that are controlled by the wealthiest people in the country to **** everybody else over by legalised bribery aka lobbying. If you voted for these parties you voted to lose your money.

Not to mention the morons that voted for the GST in the first place.

    • They are same evils and I will go for $1 less, which is real.

      • What's weird is people's hangups about the GST starting to be applied to a tiny portion of what they buy … when everything else already has GST applied but that's fine.

It makes no sense to be constantly bringing up Gerry Harvey and then have nothing to say about everything else that already has GST applied to it.

This is what convinced the brainwashed to vote for the GST:

        • +1

My issue with GST for goods under 1k is, it feels like the Government wanting to add another tax and get money, I don't see the under 1k gst import tax actually helping local retaielrs, I see it as a easy money grab using Aussie retailers as an excuse.

What I find common is, even ost times with the added gst import tax on say $100 item, it can still work out much cheaper than buying the same product locally anyways. It's only when we would like warranty that buying local makes sense.

Son of a… Paid 399 couple days ago

    • how do you find it?

      • +1

        Go to a Harvey Norman

        • +2

what do you do here on OZB? get a job as a comedian and get rich..

      • Havnt opened it yet, looking for the accessories before I use it.

        • +1

Return it and buy it again then.

      • Google Maps?

  • My son needs something for Year 11/12 next year. He's doing sciences and engineering so wants something he can draw on the screen.
I've been looking at a refurbished Surface Pro 4 with 8Gb Ram, 256Gb SSD, and an I5 CPU.

These Surface Go's seem more modern, and maybe a little cheaper. I assume with this Go only having 64Gb storage that there isn't a lot of additional room for extras.

Should I go the Go or Pro4?

    • +6

      No contest, the Pro4.

      • Ok, cheers. Narrows down my choices.

        • Narrows? Considering a choice of 2 to begin with it kind of highlights which you should be choosing

          • @StevieRay: Yeah, but now I have an idea what I'm looking for as I found 2 places that have refurbished Pro 4s.
I also saw a Pro 3 yesterday with an I7 CPU with 512Gb for $299, but I was too slow.
Now the question is, do I pay $649 for the Pro 4 with keyboard and pen, but only 90 day warranty, $799 for Pro 4 with no keyboard or pen plus $90 for 2 years additional warranty, or $749 with keyboard/no pen and only 1 year warranty.
Or do I wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday and see what comes up?

            • @Rockgod70:

I also saw a Pro 3 yesterday with an I7 CPU with 512Gb for $299, but I was too slow.

That's an impulse buy. I wouldn't have hesitated at all lol. And I'm only half in the market for a tablet.

            • @Rockgod70: ACL gives you 2 years warranty, so paying for extra warranty seems redundant if they cover the same period. I would abs buy new instead of second hand, wait until Black Friday and get a good deal

    • +1

I'd check with the school. If he needs to run CAD, there are minimum requirements.

  • Can existing owners confirm if the stock Windows 10 is 64bits?

    • -1

      It is.

      • thanks. I had thought so given it has 4GB RAM but then I saw this when looking up how to switch out of S mode via this link https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4020089/windows-10-…

"If you switch out of S mode, you can install 32-bit (x86) Windows apps that aren’t available in the Microsoft Store in Windows. If you make this switch, it's permanent, and 64-bit (x64) apps still won't run."

        • I think that was the case in earlier incarnations of S mode — and still would be with the ARM processors — but the current Surface Go ships with 64-bit Windows.

          • @dcash: Is there any way to turn off automatic updates through registry hacks or sorts while staying in S mode?

Better off to price match on MS online, get a free accessory and also possible $100 amex cashback.

    • Gotta spend $500 or more for that $100 AMEX cashback so you wouldn't get that if you got the price match.

      • +1

MS online charge their advertised price first and then refund the difference to you after they ship the order. So it will trigger the cashback, however I am not sure if amex will revert the cashback after you receive the refund. It worked for me once for an amex cashback from David Jones.

        • Interesting. Cheers for the info

    • what free accessory?

      • Check out on MS website.

    • Just followed your advice and rang up the MS store number 1800 267 785.

I selected this STM Dux cover as the free accessory
      https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/p/stm-dux-for-surface-pro-4-…

They will email a link to upload the screenshot of the store and price to pricematch. Then they will call you back once that is approved to proceed with the full price payment. Then the price match difference gets refunded.

      • I did through online chat, but same process. I received the order in 3 days and they have issued the refund to me already.

        • You are lucky. I just tried to place an order and they refuse to price match saying that it isn't a like-for-like deal (MS price includes free accessory whereas HN don't). :(

          • @bfg100k: May be try different person. The two reps which I spoke to were more than happy to match the price and include a free accessory.

        • Did you receive the Amex cashback?

          • @lomie: I did, however, I also bought type cover and pen together. So it ended up over $500 already.

  • So I bought this and really loving it so far! I enjoy the compact size and weighs less than a kilo so it's been great! Being able to charge with USB C during class (or anywhere really!) when a plug isn't available has been the main reason why I wanted one in the first place!

  • +1

Whole dollar, that’s some serious savings there

  • Slow but good for this special price.
