Save your money it's not worth it plus the developers literally hate most customers

      Gilfoyle?

    • +5

Agree entirely, they keep making the user interace WORSE and worse. I casually use it and actually regret buying it. The UI is REALLY bad now.

      • +1

The removal of the volume control slider is puzzling.

        • +2

I just wanna browse ALL TV SHOWS - how? it's so bafflingly complicated.

          • @hamwhisperer: Umm browsing all tv shows isn’t complicated at all.

          • @hamwhisperer: Why are you have difficulties? The previous mobile UI was horribly unintuitive.

On the current interface I can easily go to my separate libraries using the page navigation button.

        • Phones have a physical volume buttons which makes developers seeing the slider as redundant. I'm sure there is others like you that use it but from a design GUI perspective makes little sense.

          • @4agte: Depends on how you prefer to use your device really and I'm not aware of other programs that done away with it. The major drawback with regard to Plex is that the physical volume buttons won't adjust the volume when you are casting. Which now makes it a pretty pointless app if you can't use it as a remote.

            • @cornbeef:

The major drawback with regard to Plex is that the physical volume buttons won't adjust the volume when you are casting.

I can see how that would be a big annoyance. Is this a iOS thing? I don't have this issue on Android

              • @4agte: I'd say it must be iOS. Can you see the volume slider on android or does it only work with the side buttons? And can the volume be adjusted when casting?

              • @4agte: Apparently they are putting the volume slider back in. The latest testflight shows it in a secondary window, not unlike spotify,

    • Personally don’t think the Plex premium features are worth the price. The plex android app doesn’t have codecs for direct play on some 4K files. It transcodes and smashes my server, eventually lagging the video. I switched to jelly fin. The jelly fin android app allows for external players. I use jelly fin+vlc and I get buttery smooth playback direct play!

Waiting for a jelly fin IOS app so I can shutdown my plex server.

Spend your money its worth it even if the developers literally hate most customers.

Annoying that IceTV subscription is needed for live tv now, but still a great system.

    • +6

      IceTV isn’t required.

      There’s several free options:
      https://www.xmltv.net/
      http://freepg.tv/Default.aspx

      • +1

Legend, thanks! I've got a month still going on free trial, so will get those up and running before it ends!

        • Use the xmltv.net one, it's great. Freepg.tv is shit in my region, YMMV.

    • or you can scrape your own data pretty easily straight from freeview with webgrabplus…

… but those xmltv.net links are pretty bloody good!

I am looking for a new alternative to plex if anyone has a solution. I have been paying monthly for years and the idea of paying $120 when I have already paid $200+ is rough. Also the app on my bravia is buggy as hell and the plex server loves having a hissy-fit every now and then.

    • +8

      Jellyfin

    • +2

You should try jellyfin, which is an opensource offshoot of Emby. I have tried both Emby and Jellyfin (on a RPi4)and while jf is still a bit short of add-ons, the ability to transcode without paying a penny (among many other things which the free version of emby lacks) is awesome. Also, you can set it up to access your library off net though with the risks usually associated.

    • +1

I run Plex inside Kodi on my Bravia and I love it…no problems what so ever…may be try that…I also run Plex server in Linux so not sure if that is the difference ..I don't have Plex subscription, it's just free version but does the kob…

      • +1

There's a jellyfin add-on for Kodi too which works alright

    • I've got an older Sony Bravia KDL-55W800C running the plex app. Plex server is a Windows VM. Works great 99% of the time. Every few weeks it forgets the ordering of TV shows I like (Unplayed, reverse order by unplayed) but for the sake of ~10 seconds setting that back up I'm very happy with it.

Have you updated the app on your Bravia? I manually update the client every few months, but that's because I don't like auto-updating things.

      • Mine regularly forgets my played and what not. How do you get it to remember?

    • About a year ago I got NBN and decided to try streaming. I've been using a free Android app called Wako and a real-debrid service which is about $55/year.
It is amazing. There are cached torrents for most things that you can stream instantly.

  • +1

Just wait for a 50% off email. You'll randomly get it eventually.

Personally I see no need for Plex Pass. There's zero benefit to me. Cheaper to pay ~$6 per android device for the app. Hardware acceleration isn't as good quality and nearly any decent CPU from the last decade can handle 2 streams at the same time on the rare occasion it can't direct stream.

Plex is great tho. Quite a bit better and more polished than Emby.

    • +1

been waiting 7 years so far no 50% voucher as of yet .

      • Just check emails, turns out I've been getting the $74.99 redemption codes every 3 months.
I think I did pay $6 using my Google Rewards money 5 years ago.

    • I got my $75 USD (came up as $99 AUD on the plex site) voucher a couple of weeks ago, which I jumped on.

  • +1

i thought it was worth the money. i paid $99 but i can now stream to my phone, etc.

    • You don't have to pay $99 to stream but allows you to stream on any device. Alternatively you can just pay a once off fee in the app to get the ability to stream from server to phone. About $6-8.

      • yea tried doing that heaps of times and it wouldn't let me buy that so i waited for a deal for plex pass. other benefits do help like being able to download content from a server onto any device and then if you're offline for a while you download an entire tv series onto your phone, etc.

  • Emby is heaps better than Plex.. IMHO.

  • Anyone know if you can play an image library on repeat (endless loop) in Plex?

  • +2

There is not a huge benefit for this - but i do enjoy

    • being able to stop someone streaming remotely, for when i need to do updates etc.
    • being able to msg a user
    • being able to have multiple profiles so other users in the house can have their own, without making plex accounts for everyone
    • being able to use the app without paying a licence

I mostly got it just to support something that i have been using free for ages

    • -1

being able to use the app without paying a licence

by paying a fee, you get the advantage of not paying a fee

got it. you are a brilliant mind

      • And you are a troll.

Each device requires a licence, having the pass means i don't have to keep paying license fees for each iOS/Android/Windows store device in the household.

By paying a fee (pass) for something that i was going to buy anyway, i dont have to pay other fees (licences).

I only use it for the library management these days. Their players are rubbish; I’m using Infuse and MrMc on ATV, they are a lot better

    • How have you setup Infuse or MrMc to to use the plex library? Do you have any links to a guide I could follow?
      Thanks!

      • +1

This feature is built in to MrMc, no setup required just sign in to your existing Plex server in the settings https://wiki.mrmc.tv/index.php/Plex

Personally I'm happy with the Plex client on my NVIDIA Shield TV but have it setup on MrMc as a backup option.

      • What @sav11 said :)
        It's similar for Infuse.

    • Cheers for the suggestion, will give them a shot

  • How does everybody here find offline sync? My precursory search on Reddit turns up a lot of unhappy campers…

    • I've only used it a couple of times on Windows but so far so good. Happy they made a Windows desktop client so I can use offline sync on the laptop.

    • I use it 4-5 times a year with an original iPad to take a few TV/Movies with me when I travel without 3g coverage (i.e. planes or remote regions). Takes forever, but that's because it needs to transcode everything down to what the iPad supports. I just queue it all up the day before and it's usually done before I need to leave.

      Works fine for my use.

      • Thanks. Based on these comments I'm glad I ended up forking out for it.

  • Been waiting for a discount but was hoping for more than 25%. Wondering if it will go lower for Black Friday? Mainly want it for hardware transcoding on my Synology DS918+. CPU struggles a bit with multiple transcoding streams. Offline sync is a nice bonus too for travelling

  • For those with a Shield (or who will be buying the new Shield), Plex has been updated to include Dolby Vision and Resolution Switching, and can use the AI upscaling too.

  • +3

Wow I will throw out a contrary view - I was a very early adopter so I didn't pay much about 8 years ago but I honestly think this has been the best software purchase I have ever made.

Fast forward to now, I now have a house full of kids with different eco systems (Ipads Iphones Macbooks /Android pads/phones, windows based systems, Various android TV's and a Gen 2 shield) play stations and Xboxes.

Plex just works - I have the things set up from a 4 bay NAS - Plex streams the media to everything flawlessly, transcodes and syncs to everyting flawleslly and they bring out constant updates and improvements on a regular basis.

I reckon lifetime is worth every penny!

    • Which NAS brand model are you using atm? I'm using qnap ts-453be with 16GB memory sometimes having difficulty with transcoding. Although I've beem hammering the NAS with various apps (cctv, forex vm, ombi docker), which might contribute to Plex performance

      • Using Qnap ts-453be with 8GB memory, no problems with 2 hardware transcodes and a direct play at the same time with NVR running 2 cameras.
Not sure if RAID 10 helps but it seems pretty quick.

        • Hm…I think RAID10 might affect the performance; thanks for your input!

    • I'm very happy with it too.

My only complaint is on the NVIDIA Shield TV, the Plex live TV and DVR audio is out of sync with the video. Haven't been able to find a fix for this and it's highly annoying.

    • im with you! i have a frankennas running synology which allows the intel gpu to be used for hardware transcoding (just like the official 918+)

pretty flawless really, and with the shield as the main playback device

  • I already have a plex account, can one just simply tie a new email to the account and utilise this offer, and link there plex media server to the new account ?

  • -1

    What does it do?

    • +3

Go to plex.tv and have a read.

      • -1

        Its still very confusing.

  • Been using flex for a very long time then changed to Infuse Pro

  • I purchased a lifetime subscription for plex early on. Trakt sync was one of the best features for me but recently stopped working. Looks like now you have to purchase a Trakt subscription too. Anyone know a way around this?

    • -1

yes, the workaround is dont use plex. the developers hate customers.

  • Hmm, I want the DVR feature so seems emby and Plex and both $120US normally. Jellyfin is obviously free, but not sure how well it is working with a HDHomeRun.

    • emby was open source but Luke is a retarded (profanity) and wanted money. So the "alternative to plex" was turned into… "just another plex"

      • Yeah I had a look and decided to get this lifetime plex pass. I looked when it was $100 and decided against it.
