Mutti Whole Peeled Canned Tomatoes - $1.00 @ Woolworths

2852

Hear me out. These are the best tomatoes, hands down.

I bought 36 cans. I love them that much. I’d buy more if I could fit them. I use them in place of fresh or canned crushed when cooking all the time.

They’re sweet. Not bitter, not sour, balanced, not tinny. I don’t even like raw tomatoes but I’d drink this stuff from the can. In fact I usually keep a spoonful just to eat on its own.

None of this Annalisa crap that tastes like metal, skinless but not really screw around. These are TOP tier. The REAL Italian deal. They ARE THAT different and you will never buy another variety or brand. The only downside is that the cans don’t stack.

A year ago you could easily buy these at Coles for ~$2 a can. Then Coles stopped stocking them. I reached out to the supplier and nobody in QLD sold them. When I moved to WA I was stoked, the supplier found some IGA stores and specialty grocers that sold them. It was emotional.
But! They’re $2+ per can there. This is half the price! Plus you can stack with eGiftcard discounts and earn rewards points.

My preferred way to use them in in Marcella Hazan’s Essentials of Italian cooking Bolognese sauce, on its own or even in a lasagna with her Béchamel, heaven. They even go well in curries, or simmered down with some garlic and onion for a pizza sauce to die for.

I'm sold. Going to buy 100 cans and take a bath in it.

"Mutti" literally means mom in German, is that a good sign?

  • +1

Great write up. I tried the passata a while ago when it was on special and didn't like it. Found it a bit too sweet. Going to give the cans a try based on your endorsement.

  • +1

I feel obligated to buy now and I don't ever cook…

    • +4

You can eat this straight from the tin

  • +3

Of course, something like this comes along after i've just canned 30 kilos of tomatoes

  • +3

OP's description reminds me of the 'my life is potato' guy

    https://youtu.be/QiqqC_fbP1c

    • I have tomato blood in my veins.

      My life is tomato.

In your working life and in your living, it's always tomatoes.

      I dream of tomatoes.

When we are going to harvest, in your heart and in your mind.. you feel…
That you are going to export the tomato and you are not going to see it anymore. That hurts.

The family thinks always from morning to evening about the tomatoes .

  • +1

This make is the BOMB! I buy them when on sale. I buy the crushed. PS Coles still stock them.

    • +2

      This make is the BOMB!

      You're damn right it is.

      I buy the crushed.

Polpa? Yep, they're pretty good but I can definitely taste a difference in the end result (they're still really good compared to other brands) and these whole peeled are just more balanced in flavor. I just crush them up with a wooden spoon, they all cook down the same with a little time anyway.
I was using Polpa for general purposes and saving these for special occasions because I could score them for $1 on special at Coles but now that I can get these for the same price I'll always be using these.

      PS Coles still stock them

Coles have always sold the Baby Roma and Cherry Mutti cans too but… Baby Roma, despite saying skinless is definitely not and I don't enjoy the pieces of skin in my sauce, and the Cherry are way too sweet for most dishes where the tomato is not the star (they might go well on a Bruschetta).

      Enjoy!

      • I've never tried bruschetta with Tinned tomatoes, seems it would be too mushy?

        • It would be shit

  • Mmmmm BPA

  • +1

My life is tomato, when i wake up i see tomato, when i sleep i dream of tomato.

  • These aren't BPA free.

  • Heard you out. Interesting story so I’ll probably buy a can just to see what I think.

  • WA is being brain washed by Mutti. My sis in law from WA recommended Mutti claiming that they are really good. We tried it when on sale half price and never looked back.

We always use fresh tomatoes but gonna give these a try. Thanks OP we heard you! They better be good or it will change to We Hurt You really quickly.

These two recipes are great if you enjoy tomato pasta
You just need to run them thru a translator.
I like the Mutti cherry tomato cans, they make great products.

  • This brand comes on sale at IGA for .69cents occasionally.
Another tip is to only buy whole peeled tomatoes rather than the pulped variety as the former is better quality.

    Ozbargain has lost the plot.

Post a real bargain and catch grief for it. It's "overhyped" and how dare you post with a link to a review. One Ozbargainer tells you it is too detailed for the product while another insists it isn't detailed enough

But post a fluffy story about hoarding canned vegies on special and the crowd goes wild.

    Utter madness.

    • you need to care less about random peoples posts on the internet

      • +2

Relax syousef - Just let the sheep graze and fluff about grunting.

      • -2

You need to stop telling others what they should and shouldn't care about. It's the ultimate in being dismissive.

I don't even want a pat on the back for posting a deal here. I just want to post without being slammed for it. Think about how many more actual deals you'd get posted if the community didn't behave like this. You might even save more than $36 on canned veggies you might never eat.

        • You need to stop telling others what they should and shouldn't care about. It's the ultimate in being dismissive.

again, you need to care less about what randoms on the internet post

if you want to post a deal, good… if you don't, fine
just don't get so offended if you don't get the praise you hoped for

and i read that thread… no idea how you were 'slammed'….. seem way to eager to be offended by someones post about a review you linked to for a basic unmanaged switch..

          • -3

            @SBOB:

just don't get so offended if you don't get the praise you hoped for

Did you fail comprehension? I don't give a crap about praise. But how about a little bit of respect eh? How about not being told off for posting a deal. I guess I'm asking for too much, right?

no idea how you were 'slammed'….. seem way to eager to be offended

Oh I was slammed. Being told I had "hyped" a deal when I did no such thing. Being told by different posters that I should have both
            A) Not posted the review because the product is plug and play and too simple for a review to be worthwhile.
            B) Not posted the review because it was not detailed enough and didn't have statistics that typically only get reviewed for products costing 10x as much or more.

            for a basic unmanaged switch..

I see you belong to group A.

I've already told you that others commented that they found it useful. How about you take your own freaking advice and instead of insisting that you be made chief editor of all deal posts if you don't like the review skip it, and if you don't like the deal skip it. Hypocrite!

if you want to post a deal, good… if you don't, fine

Again, did you fail comprehension? You do understand what happens to this site when people stop posting deals, right?

How about you quit gaslighting and pull your head in? That'd be a nice change.

            • -1

              @syousef: wow…
again, you need to care less about what randoms on the internet post.

              • -2

@SBOB: Don't worry. I'm ignoring everything you write. It's not like I'm missing anything by doing so. You're just repeating yourself and ignoring the point entirely.

  • +3

OMG! You have made my day. I have been searching for these for ages, ever since Coles deleted them. Have been buying the crushed, Roma and Cherry varieties. Agree. Hands down THE BESt canned tomatoes. Nothing else comes close.

  • +1 for the write up alone

  • +6

Just went to my local Woolies (Victoria Harbour, Docklands), there were groups piling out with boxes of baby formula and these cans tomatoes. LOL

    • +2

Expect to see them on Gumtree soon.

  • Any preservatives in?

  • Great product, I buy in bulk when on special.
I use the Mutti Polpa diced.

  • +5

Australian grown Ardmona only for us.

  • +6

Please support local Australian growers ! Once these subsidised Italian tomatoes send Australian growers bust they will be gone for good

    Read more here

Note that is an opinion piece and I do not agree with the conclusion but it highlights the arguments well.

    • +1

Let's hope someone from Coles reads this and starts a canned tomato flavour improvement program in partnership with some Aussie growers. Nobody is going to buy shit tasting food just because it's Australian grown. As an example, I tried Tasmanian Gouda once but it just doesn't compare to Gouda from the Netherlands. It's unfortunate but that's reality.

  • Gee that was a good sell - Have added these to the weekly shop.

  • -6

    Support Aussie farmers.

SPC Ardmona tinned tomatoes only in my household.

    • +8

I'd love to do that too, except the quality has to be good, or at least on par with the Italian ones. Personally, I can't justify paying more for inferior quality just because it's Australian grown.

Plus, if you read the Ardmona can labels, you'll note that many (though not all) of their canned tomatoes contain added preservatives such as citric acid, thickener 1422 and firming agent 509. I would much rather feed my family the Italian variety because they don't contain those preservatives.

    • -2

It is shocking to see the amount of downvotes - no wonder this country is in trouble - lets support EU farmers banking $97 billion in subsidies each year, so entitled aussie shoppers can throw our farmers and manufacturers under the bus…

      • +3

Well Aussie tomatoes taste like crap and are more expensive. I'm not a charity, grow a better tomato and then I'll buy it

  • +3

I don't use can tomatoes in my food. Now I have a dozen sitting in my pantry.

  • +3

can you imagine the stock level manager at woolworths scratching their head going

"WTF just happened, why did our sales of these tomatoes just increase 1000%"

    • +8

Plot Twist: The OP is the store manager of Woolworths.

  • +2

Thanks OP! I bought 2 cans to make spaghetti and meatballs last night… far out, the difference in taste is astonishing! You are 100% right - not sour. I usually buy the ready made jars of leggos to make bolognaise sauce, but I'm going to stock up on these to make my sauce! YOU ARE A LEGEND!!

  • +3

    I don’t cook but I bough a dozen

  • +1

Adding to the love for these tomatoes. My favourite recipe for them is also by Marcella Hazan, her 3-ingredient pasta sauce:

    https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1015178-marcella-hazans-…

Tomatoes, butter, and an onion. That's it! So good.

    • Love that one too. Her book is fantastic. It’s one of my favourite cook books. The carbonara recipe and risotto recipes are my other favourites. I’ll have to try some more exotic dishes from it soon.

  • Could this be the reason my bolognese sauce always suck? Wrong tomato can?

    • +1

Very well could be. What’s your recipe?

  • +1

36 cans just got delivered. I'm trusting you OP! So many cheap filling meals can be made with tinned tomatoes as base, and I just ran out of my previous brand.

    • -1

Enjoy, hopefully not too many slaves died in picking those tomatoes.

  • Dammit, missed out! Forgot to get them last night in all the post-storm excitement :-(
