not sure what a sine wave invertor is

Sine wave gennies produce a smoother power supply particularly for electronic devices that don't like running on conventional AC generators.

Years ago I had a cheap Aldi AC generator that was used heavily during ex-cyclone Oswald (no power for about 5 days). The only thing that didn't like working on it was an Electrolux front loader, came up with a message "Mains supply unstable". Only time I wished I had a sine wave generator.

Pure sine wave means it does a better job of making the alternating current in the 240v cleaner. Simpler (cheaper) units don't have a pure sine wave (they generate a rougher shape similar to a sine wave) so some sensitive equipment can be problematic on those. Many LED lights suddenly die after a short while on the cheaper generators (first hand experience unfortunately).

    • What about 12v pure sine inverters for a car. I'm looking at a unit with 900watts RMS output. Says 5000w peak (but I feel that is meaningless). Will 900w RMS be enough to power a 800w device (evap AC, or maybe a fridge)? I'm lost in the numbers. The add claims it will power an iron, kettle or microwave. I'm calling bs on that.

      • Got a link for the device? 5000W peak usually means it can deliver that for short periods. Microwave maybe, kettle possibly. I have a 3000W (6000W peak) pure sine one for the 4x4. I run a juicer and everything on. But remember 2400W at 12 volts is 200 amps. You wont run that for long before your battery is flat.

This is very cheap at $231.20 given its power output. Cheapest at Bunnings is 1200w Ryobi for $319.

The only concern is how noisy it is and how reliable it will be. Some of these cheaper generators are awfully noisy and I would be pretty annoyed if someone next to me camping ran this constantly ruining the serenity.

Compared to the Honda and Yamaha briefcase looking generators which are actually very quiet, these cheaper ones can be so noisy they intrude on everything.

  • Way too noisy for camping, but would be great in the cyclone season.

  • Rated Output: 1700W
