A little-more expensive than previous best price of $186.15 Delivered.

I suspect this $128.99 deal was a price-error due to the comments.

  • Waiting for another cancelled Edifier deal

    • Why? This is Edifier's own website, not Catch.

  • I order these last Friday for $199, just before the catch deal. That made me regret it a bit, but seems that was a pricing error. They already shipped, so should have them soon.

  • Are they better than getting let’s say lg SL5Y 400w Soundbar?

    • +2

      General consumer consensus is:
Movies -> Soundbar (Cinema sound with deep bass)
Music -> Bookshelf speakers (Clarity + accuracy in sound)

But some prefer Bookshelf’s for Movies as they can give clearer sounding voices & wider stereo image (larger distance between left & right channels, giving the illusion of a wider & taller source of sound from a distance).
(In this setup they will take up more space than a Soundbar)

A Soundbar like the LG SL5Y you mentioned includes a subwoofer, which will give you deeper low-end bass you expect from a cinema experience.
The Edifier R1850DB has a subwoofer output. but a subwoofer can be expensive & it will be additional cost (cheapest brand-new options likely to cost as much as the R1850DB itself).

Also take the 400w power rating with a grain-of-salt since there are holding back specifics on the power ratings even on LG’s official website.
My guess is they are peak power ratings (only achievable for a brief moment at a certain frequency).

  • This or Edifier Luna HD? According to the comment in video below Luna is better but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra $40.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj6FP8i8aIE

    • I assume you mean this comment.

Lack of tone-controls on the e25HD to make adjustments to the sound may be ok if you are easy to please.
I usually recommend Edifier’s to most because they have these tone-controls like with the R1850DB (I think it plays a big part in their ‘customer satisfaction’ because everyone’s hearing is different).

Other than that obviously the appearance will be a major decision maker for some.
Also the subwoofer output on the R1850DB is a plus, since it makes it compatible with future upgrades (adding sub) therefore adding to its value.

      • TBH I don't know much about audio so I'm not sure how much I will use the tone control.

Does the DSP quoted in the Luna mean anything? Or I guess is that something that a powered speaker with optical input must have? My motherboard does have optical out so that's what I will be using.

        • Does the DSP quoted in the Luna mean anything?
Or I guess is that something that a powered speaker with optical input must have?

Yes you are correct. Many powered speakers use a DSP in the place of a cross-over to separate the high-frequencies from the low-frequencies and send them to the amplifiers & drivers.
In some cases (such as Edifier) they also add ”tone controls” to add the ability to adjust bass & treble levels inside the DSP.

If you are connecting to the PC, then you will be able to use an EQ software to achieve the same function as “tone controls” (and more detailed adjustments) on the e25HD Luna.

By the way, Red e25HD is available for $197.42 Delivered (eBay Plus members) or $209.02 Delivered (standard members) here @ Be-start eBay (NSW) & TrinityConnect eBay (QLD)

E25HD-RED is shown under SKU, MPN and model, so both should be the HD model. (e25 has analog inputs only).
Also the stands need to be bought separately.

          • @thebadmachine: Thanks for your help! I've decided on the Luna HD

            • +1

@AlgoTrading: Just in-case you missed it, I just read in the YouTube comments that on the e25HD the 3.5mm & Toslink optical are in the same 3.5mm port.
So you will need to use a Mini-Toslink to Toslink cable, or purchase one.

  • @margejsimpson The R1280DB are more at my price range and what I am interested in to replace my old 2.1 PC speakers. 90% usage is podcasts, videos, music etc. Really trying to avoid having to have a subwoofer so was also considering a soundbar. thoughts?

    • +1

My thoughts are the R1280DB will be clearer for vocals & speech with the drivers pointed at you, compared to a Soundbar.

      • Makes sense. R1280DB vs R1850DB? given the price difference the latter is a big jump and the former is within the budget i planned. although of course the arm is easily twisted..

        • +1

The R1850DB is basically a R1700BT with added optical / coax digital inputs & subwoofer output.
The R1700BT has a slightly more V-shaped sound-signature (recessed mid-range) compared to the R1280DB, and the R1280DB has a more balanced sound-signature which would be ideal for clear vocals / speech.
R1280DB also digs slightly deeper in the bass.

          • @thebadmachine: Sounds like you think the R1280DB is my best bet too.

          • @thebadmachine: Other option I was looking at was a Yamaha or Creative soundbar

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Especially since you mention ‘podcasts & music’ I would direct you at the R1280DB when it is on-sale, with its conventional speaker cabinet design.
If you position (height / distance) & angle the speakers correctly (you will have to experiment and achieve this yourself), you will get clearer & wider sound (this area in particular is the soundbar’s weakness).

              • @thebadmachine: Hey Going to get these but need to confirm first that it will be okay to have these laying horizontally? They wont fit the normal way on my desk.
Also is the powered speaker that everything plugs in to only on a specific side or can they be interchanged?

                • @[Deactivated]:

okay to have these laying horizontally?

                  Yes they will work.

is the powered speaker that everything plugs in to only on a specific side or can they be interchanged?

The powered speaker is on a specific side.

And please remember Edifier AU only provides "free shipping" to certain areas (details in deal post).

                • @[Deactivated]: Also I saw your comment in the Yamaha soundbar deal.
The soundbar is much shorter & thinner, it will take up much less space than the Edifier's even if they are placed horizontally.

Look up the measurements for both & use a ruler / tape-measure to see how much space each will take up.

                  • @thebadmachine: Thanks heaps. The soundbar is long though but yeah can easilly fit on my desk.
Laying the edifiers flat though will work too. leanning towards that. I can buy them locally for $129.
Or the soundbar C&C For the sale price

  • Would this be an upgrade to my Yamaha sound bar (yas-207) for a basic tv audio setup? The Yamaha has been serving me awesome for movies but I find my usage to be 50%tv and 50% music via Bluetooth. For music the Yamaha sounds kinda flat. Vocals are really lacking. Feel like I get depression from them. (Exaggeration but yeh)

  • hi all, looking to get a new speaker for my desktop/study room. I am currently using Swan M10s which are dying and have had a lot of static / humming noise before when it was working.

How do these fare? Especially as a 2.0 setup compared to my existing 2.1.

Also, is it simply plug and play?

    • +1

How do these fare? Especially as a 2.0 setup compared to my existing 2.1.

Coming directly from 2.1 you will most likely miss the subwoofer.
The R1850DB has sub-output though so you can add your own.

Maybe you can plug the swan subwoofer into the sub-out and just use that.

Also, is it simply plug and play?

Yes basically plug n play, they are active speakers & everything needed is included in the box.

      • damn, so i'll lose a lot of the bass? I suppose it is not too much of a big deal… assumin you play music that requires bass haha.

I thought the R1850DB had their own subwoofer functionality to an extent?

        Cheers btw!

I mainly use it for youtube, browsing, movies, music (I do listen to EDM such as trance etc)

        • I would say lose a little low-end bass. But even a small change in bass is noticeable.
They will do quite well on their own, but for stuff under 50Hz (mainly movies or certain electronic music etc) you may notice a small difference.

          https://swanspeakers.com/product/m10/

Just looked it up the Swan M10 with 5-inch woofer only goes down to around 42Hz with the subwoofer anyway, so maybe the difference is smaller than you might think. But you will likely still notice it, especially the punch down at 42Hz.

If the Swan subwoofer is fine on its own, I’m sure you can plug it into the sub-output on R1850DB and just disconnect the Swan satellites.

          • @thebadmachine: Thanks again.
Yup, my M10 satellites are pretty much dead ahahha. So hopefully the Swan woofer will work stil through the sub-output.

The reason I liked M10s was that it just all-in-one for a decent price. especially since my use is quite casual, nothing really super audiophile-related.

I'm hoping that if I get the R1850DBs, I'll most likely just use it 2.0 without any subwoofer, unless the difference is crazily obvious.

Just curious, assuming you use the R1850DB as a 2.0 setup…does it kinda sound like say a much more improved audio from watching/listening to music off a phone??

            • @zxblood:

I own different speakers. But yes it will be better.

              • @thebadmachine: cool ! So essentially , all around better performance, at the slight cost of bass is what im making it out to be in simple terms.

                What speakers are you on?

                • @zxblood: Yes I would think so.

Kind of going to bore you but I listen on studio monitors (most people would probably think they sound boring & flat with little bass & treble), but I prefer the neutral sound when it comes to speakers.
Most people prefer some ‘fun’ sound for audio (with extra bass or highs).

        • You could get the R1850DB and get this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/512098
And have much more bass than your M10’s.
