If purchasing for Parallels Desktop ..
Length of access: 1 year (then will be $79.99/yr thereafter, can cancel at anytime)
Credit card required for redeeming this product

    • +3

      That's pretty dodgy…

      • -1

Don't think it is dodgy, Credit card is through the Parallels site. This is standard for a subscription product.

        • +3

More just that the subscription wasn't mentioned in the title or description.

          • @SiliconBased: On the product page it is mentioned in the dot point list

            "Subscription length: 1 year"

            • @Smigit: That wasn't before - they added that today. I checked yesterday after being suckered. Textexpander is also a subscription, but still not mentioned in that description either.

              • +1

@pinchies: I’d given this a look much earlier during the 60% off coupon and it was clearly a 1 year subscription then but now using the link above the offer is presented differently and it is way less obvious. I can understand you feeling misled.

          • @SiliconBased: Ok, looked again - that is a bit unclear.

    • Just to be clear:

If you buy this bundle from nypost.com, you can't start using Parallels until you ALSO give parallels.com your credit card number to commit to a subscription?

If that's right, it sounds not only dodgy but borderline illegal. You're not getting what you purchased until you make an additional subscription.

      • "You're not getting what you purchased until you make an additional subscription."

What additional subscription? There's only 1 subscription as far as I can tell, this just gives the first year free. I haven't checked but generally if you've paid a year in advance you can cancel renewals right away so you don't need to worry about it renewing and you wont be charged.

No deal for a subscription. Deceptive that it is not mentioned anywhere prominent.

  • With parallels even if you buy the non subscription license you still need to pay for software updates each year whenever Apple releases an OS update. So either way you need to pay every year whether it's updates or subscription model. It's really scummy and is why I moved to using VMware. This deal is worth it just for PDF Expert though

    • Not quite true. First you don’t have to upgrade your OS X and stay on the older OS for at least a year while major bugs and security is still patched. Second, Parallels usually doesn’t break anually. Usually Parallels will keep working across two years of OS X with minor if any impairment. I would typically get 2-2.5 years out of each perpetual license before I needed to upgrade due to OS X incompatibility. I live with Fusion now.

  • Oof, people pay to run Windows stuff on a Mac?

    • huuuge amount of people in fact.

my colleagues install and run full Windows on macbook pro… there must be a deep and profaned psychological reason!

      • I run windows 10 on my MacBook… For free…
