The problem with the using the 15% voucher directly with RedBalloon is that if you buy a gift for someone directly from RedBalloon at 15% off and they don't like it, they can swap it for something else, but it will be at the %15 reduced price. E.g. If you bought a $200 experience as a gift from RedBalloon for $170 and the recipient of the gift want's to swap it for something else, they'll only get $170 value to swap.
However, if you buy the $200 gift card from PayPal for $170, the recipient of the gift gets $200 value regardless of which experience they choose.
Imo experiences seem more personal. Gift cards are like "here ya go, didn't know what you'd like but now you're forced to spend XXX here"
I agree, to get around that I always pick a specific experience and send them my choice that I wanted to buy them, but let them know they can totally choose whatever they want.
I normally make it a slightly cryptic message / card that directs them to a bitly shortened URL that directs them to the specific experience.
