  • Silly question, but is Seagate reliable these days? Every SeaGate drive I have owned in the past seemed to crash or slow down much faster than there Toshiba/WD/Samsung counterparts.

    • +2

Seagate still has the highest failure rate.

      https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-hard-drive-stats-q3…

      • While backblaze does give us a good indicator of build quality, failure rates from them will be artificially high (even though the ratios should still be the same) given their use case for all brands.

For those that don't know they provide a well priced backup service. In order to keep prices where they are, backblaze use consumer hard drives in their data centre. These drives are driven significantly harder than they will in any PC.

    • +1

Seagate fail more often than WD from my personal experience over the years.

But all HDD fails over times, best way to not lost your data is to have a second backup or third backup.

    • +3

I've had more WD's fail in my experience, but both are reliable brands. Buy whatever is cheapest at the time I say.

EDIT: Do note though that these 8TB Seagates likely contain SMR drives, which aren't the best performers.

    • IMO it's particular models that are disasters rather than brands as such.

I had 3 out of 4 3TB Seagates die - that was a particularly bad time.

I was also the proud owner of an IBM 60GXP 'deathstar' which would last a about a month between failures. IBM was bought out by Hitachi and went on to make great drives later..

At this time - the WD expansions seem to be the safest bet (I have 4x 10tb ones on their way to me now)

  • +2

    waiting for 12tb deal

    • Same

  • -2

Even if these were under $200, the WD's are faster and more reliable.

Seagate SMR drives have a woeful failure rate for the price and lackluster warranty, and having to replace 8tb at HDD speeds takes almost a day due to the way SMR writes in large shales/shingles/blocks/segments.

They aren't fast drives. You could risk it, but expect it to stop dead 1 hour or 1 day after the warranty period.
