  • Price in title, please.

  • Does the Switch not actually come with one of these?

    • +6

Some people like to have more than one, so they don't have to unplug their dock all the time.

  • I just got a switch and also can't imagine when I'll need a spare so if you can explain the possible usages, that'll be good.

I thought it's just a normal type C plug so any cable works for charging purposes only?

    • -2

Only this adapter work for the dock

      • -2

        This is incorrect.

          • +3

@gdiddy7: This is not the only adapter that will work for the dock.

ps. I was writing my post below here, which already elaborates further on this matter, while you responded to me. I'm sorry for taking the time to provide a thorough answer! :)

            • @caprimulgus: Now that was a perfect reply. Should have just replied with that rather then your original comment. I commend you for that 👍🏻 It helps us noobs get valuable information.

There are several power bank options that will work with the dock.

    • Careful lots of stories of not using official adaptors bricking the switching. Something about nintendo not using unicameral USB c standards

The reason for buying a second one is so that you don't have to unplug your dock to charge your Switch somewhere else.

      Possible uses:
-charger in travel case for charging on the go (without having to unplug your dock)
-charger at work (without having to unplug your dock)
-charger next to the couch for handheld play on the couch (without having to unplug your dock)
-charger in the bedroom for handheld play in bed (without having to unplug your dock)
-charger for use with second dock on another TV/monitor (without having to unplug your dock)
-charger for use with portable dock (without having to unplug your dock)
-charger for use with the Switch that you bought secondhand that came with no charger (probably stolen)
-charger for use with the Switch that you stole from someone with no charger (definitely stolen!)
-replacement for lost charger (from when you lost your original one after unplugging your dock!)
-weapon for defending against home invasion (without having to unplug your dock)
-rope for tying hands of home invader after you've whacked them on the head with your spare charger (without having to unplug your dock)

I thought it's just a normal type C plug so any cable works for charging purposes only?

It is, but this will charge faster than regular USB-C (as opposed to USB-C PD), and you also need a specific profile of PD (15V at 2.6A) to use with a dock.

    • I never thought they'd be much use but I bought two spare since I got them for like $10 each or something. Eventually took one to work and put one next to the bed. Has been great. One has now died. Would buy another.

So, yeah.. for the right price, I'm convinced. Otherwise use an alternative.

It's better to get a blitzwolf USB C PD charger, so you can use it for all your USB C devices. The switch charger doesn't follow USB C PD standards so only really necessary for the dock.

    • yeah I'm also confirming this since there seems to be some misinformation above. Only need official AC adapter for the dock. For normal charging you can use most USB-C PD chargers.

      • +2

You don't even need the official AC adapter for the dock. You can use any USB-C PD charger (or even powerbank) that has the correct profile (15V with at least 2.6A).

  • Got one, thanks OP

Picked one up last time, it was a bit of a gamble because I wanted it to charge my Surface Go tablet (I don't own a switch). It charges it up perfectly while in use so can recommend it for that.

    • FWIW, this is not a particularly good charger to buy for charging other (non-Switch) devices. It has very limited USB-C profiles (only 5V and 15V), so if your PD devices don't have 15V, you will be limited to 5V/3A.

In your case, it seems to have worked out fine though! (I guess Surface Go has 15V profile) :)

  • Do I need 3? One for the sofa, one next to my bed, and one for the dock?

    • I have 6 (although only 2 official ones), and have backed 2 more on kickstarter! lol :P

      -TV (official AC adapter)
-Next to couch (multi-port third party charger with USB-C PD)
      -Second TV (official AC adapter)
-Next to bed (multi-port third party charger with USB-C)
      -Travel case (third party charger)
      -Work (third party charger)

It's convenient to be able to plug in anywhere, and not to have to unplug things! :)

      Have also backed:
-Genki Covert Dock (will replace the one in my travel case as a portable dock)
-HyperJuice 100W dual-PD GaN charger (for laptop / overseas travel)

  • Why the hell wont this add to my cart?

    grumble

  • Damn it…snooze you lose :(
Guess i'll just try my Samsung s10 charger.

  • Can you use a normal usb c cable?

    • You can use a USB-A to USB-C cable to charge the Switch, but it will charge slower and will not be able to power the dock. (Also, make sure it is USB-C compliant and has the proper 56k resistor.)

You can use a USB-C to USB-C cable to charge AND power the dock (as long as you have an appropriate USB-C PD charger).

      For reference:
USB-A charges the Switch at up to 7.5W max
USB-C charges the Switch at up to 10W max
USB-C PD chargers the Switch at up to 18W max (depending on the profile)

      • 56k resistor? Great, I'm sure most product listings don't even mention that. What a pain to find :(

So far I've only bought Blitzwolf A->C cables, I'll have to check them out later.

        • +1

Yeah, it is really annoying! That’s one reason I hate legacy cables (USB-A to C), and avoid them as much as I can!

FWIW, though, I’ve had pretty good experiences with Blitzwolf products. I haven’t checked to make sure, but I’d be pretty confident that Blitzwolf have done the right thing, and made their cables compliant with the correct 56k resistor. The one legacy cable that I do use, aside from the Pro Controller cable, is a Blitzwolf too! :)

  • If anyone still wants one Target is still selling them at $20.

Darn, I'm too slow. I really want another one but now that I know that can be only $20 I'm never going to pay RRP :)
