  • Yeah, this is a good price.
I got this for $310 about a year ago.
Love it, works wonderfully as PC speakers for me.

  • How does this compare with something like the Logitech Z906 5.1 system?

    • +3

This is miles better than Logitech if you are using for PC speakers.

      • -2

Do you mean in sound quality? The 906 has 300w RMs vs 135 for this one.

        • +4

that just means how big is your space and how loud you want it to be

          SQ is more than that

          • @dcep: Yeah I know. I wasn’t saying more watts is better quality. Just wanted clarification on what makes this better than the 906 since they are in a similar price range

Edit: it’s actually 500w rms not 300w. Oops.

        • +3

The Yamaha AVR does per channel
          70w, 100w, and 135w

The z906 has a Max of 70w per speaker and 165W for the sub.

Therefore with the amp you can run speakers that require twice as much juice as the z906, which can result in more reproduction or more thump depending what speakers you buy.

The 500w is meaningless, you could argue the Yamaha does 810w. See my comments below

        • +3

The 135W figure seemed off so I did a little digging. From Yamaha's website:

          70 W per Channel (6 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.09% THD, 2-ch driven)
          100 W per Channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.9% THD, 1-ch driven)
          135 W per Channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 10% THD, 1-ch driven)

The 135W figure is per channel, although that is only with one channel driven at 1 kHz and at an insane 10% THD. The 70W per channel figure is a lot more realistic.

The Z906 on the other hand claims 5 x 67W, plus 165 W for the subwoofer equals 500W total. However, that is at one frequency and 10% distortion. As you can see from the Yamaha figures above, the rating would be drastically reduced if you wanted less distortion across the full frequency range. The Z906's true full range distortion-free output is almost certainly closer to 200-300W. Efficiency isn't quoted, but I would expect similar numbers to Yamaha's 84 db.

In short, this Yamaha is roughly as loud and probably gets louder than the Logitech Z906.

          • @Franckel: Thanks for the detailed response. I get it now. Not sure why I was negged for asking a question but hey, this is OzBargain. Must have offended some Yamaha fanboys lol.

        • Well this is 2000w RMS and comes with 4 subwoofers plus flashing lights. It's the best: https://www.graysonline.com/auctionproduct/sonyhtddw8-107952…

I've used several sets of speakers with my PC. The Z906 and Z5500 were the best sets. I can't imagine going back to a set that has less than 1/3 the output! Just because it's a Yamaha doesn't automatically mean it's great. I've had the Z906's for about 7 years and the z5500's for close to 15 years and they still whoop most home theatre setups that cost under a grand.

        • +4

Really? You can buy a lot for under a grand.
If you go with an entry level Yamaha or pioneer speaker around $300, and have $700 to spend on a sub, Centre, fronts and rears.

There are many speakers that offer better sound for the money than z906s. Just depends what you listen to.

Otherwise z906s are fine for bedrooms and study rooms

Edit: oh by the way, it's 135W @ 6ohms per channel. Z906 speakers are only 70w per channel for satellites and 165W for the sub. So equivalent marketing jargon would say 810 total watts, but home theatres don't joke like that https://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/home_theatre_…

        • +1

I can't imagine going back to a set that has less than 1/3 the output!

This set has more, not less output than the Z906. See my other comment above.

they still whoop most home theatre setups that cost under a grand

This is a meaningless statement. Is a $20 speaker connected to a TV via 3.5mm jack included in your definition of a home theatre setup that cost under a grand?

If you mean to say that the Z906 is competitive with good $800-$1000 home theatre setups today, what info are you basing that on? What are the details of the setups that you compared the Z906 against?

  • On the fence between this and this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Yamaha-ATS-2070B-Soundbar-20…

I guess it depends on what best suits your situation?

    • +7

A sound bar won’t come close to actual surround, issue is can you place speakers in a good location

      • Thanks and good point to note in my situation. Space is at a premium and it will be difficult to run cables all around the room. Also no spot for the rear speakers.

    • +1

You can stream music from your phone to the soundbar using Bluetooth if that interests you. The amp doesn't appear to support this.

      • True thanks. I also like the HDMI option

      • +3

Chromecast Audios (If you can get your hands on one) are fantastic for this very reason.

        • Agreed. Also, this has four HDMI inputs. I'm pretty sure you could connect any Chromecast and use it for music streaming.

        • I see plenty around still. I saw reviews saying how crazy the hardware is for cost, so bought one… two… three. Need to stop.

Poor man's Sonos: chromecast audio, Logitech x5500 off gumtree. SWEEET!

  • +1

    Bought one. Thanks OP.

  • +2

Tempted to buy on description alone
“It has a 135 W total output, so you can impress family and friends with the magnitude of your systems' power”

    • +5

Read that in Darth Vader voice

  • +4

    Any models with bluetooth speakers?

  • +1

This might be a stupid question, but would buying these and not using the rear speakers still result in better sound than a soundbar in the same price range?

    • +2

Yeah that's what I did - don't use the rears and it's significantly better than a sound bar. (Probably depends on the sound bar though)

  • If I buy from eBay, would I be able return to the store if anything wrong?

I think my house already has the cables in the wall left by previous owner but not sure if they work or not. If not then might need to return it.

    • You could pay with Palpal and use their free returns offer if needed?

    • When you buy from Ebay and pick it up from The Good Guys, they give you a receipt that looks like you just went into the store and bought it. You might be able to return it

  • +2

I have a similar Yamaha setup that i bought 10 years ago and love it.
This is all you need unless you are audiophile and it will outperform any soundbar. I also have mid range yamaha soundbar and while it is excellent this setup will always outperform it in every aspect.

I had 600w sony system that was much powerful but ended up selling it to get the Yamaha.

    • You sold the Sony due to sound quality being better on the Yamaha? Or some other reason?

      • Yeah mate… it was triple the price but sound quality wasn’t good at all.

  • I think the receiver here is the same as the RX-V385, which sells for not much less.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/505069

This is a great price. if you want , you can keep the amp and upgrade the L/R speakers later.

    • I don't believe that's correct - I think this package has a receiver without bluetooth otherwise they'd advertise it so likely the HTR-2071?

      • +1

Ah, well spotted. The HTR-3071 too looks similar.

  • My husband really wants this.
We already have a panasonic BTT405 from 2016.
    Is it worth the upgrade?
    Thank you

    • +2

I'd say so it's worth the upgrade. You need to plug in your bluray player into this receiver and enjoy the movies. Also, you can upgrade the speakers down the track if you want to since you have a receiver as a base set up. But if your husband wants more power, you should look at a different receiver. This is a good start up if your husband is not fussed with technicalities of sound.

      • Thank you,
we purchased one and will sell our old one.

  • +1

I have this… Actually have two of them! Was a cheap way to get a 4k receiver with HDR passthrough. The only thing I don't like is lack of Bluetooth… But otherwise they're great. One is set up as a 2.1 system using the included sub but I have bigger floor standing speakers, and the other is running the proper 5.1 but again using different speakers (only kept the sub on that one too). That's the beauty of these things… Upgrade the speakers whenever you want 😃

  • Pulled the trigger as I couldn’t resist any further. I’ve been researching the 2nd market, mainly on Gumtree, and realised that the chance of getting a used receiver supporting 4K HDMI Pass-through is very slim. Still hope I can score some good old speakers to replace the stock ones of this set, but it’d be tricky as I’m not familiar with speakers.

    • Still hope I can score some good old speakers to replace the stock ones of this set, but it’d be tricky as I’m not familiar with speakers.

According to Yamaha, the specs state 70W for 2 channels driven @ 6 Ohms.
Many speakers float between 6 & 8 Ohms in resistance (newer speakers are more 8) so therefore, if you get 8 Ohm speakers, you'll be lucky to get 40W out of them. And that is only for 2 channels! Multi-channel drops further

This is a good unit for a standalone setup and that's it. That is what it comes with & a small room. Unless you have better speakers lying around doing nothing.

If you think you'll buy this and then pay another $400 for good second hand speakers, then you might as well spend $800 for a better setup.

If you crank this unit up with decent speakers, it may blow the speakers due it not having enough power to drive them & distortion.

It's an entry level receiver for a basic system is its intention and if you're happy with that, then yes it's a bargain!

      Cheers

      • Thanks for the advice! Will keep it in mind. I may use it for a while to get the hang of 5.1 system and know what I want (and can justify!) and then upgrade to a better system when a new bargain is posted here.

      • Btw just wonder if you could give me some advice about decent deals posted in the past about receivers/speakers that I should keep an eye on when the same bargains are back again in the future? I'd prefer something which is a bit 'future proof' like Atmos or DTS:X and HDR Dolby Vision.

        • +1

This is a very easy question depending on your patience.

Wait next year (possibly mid year) on next gen receivers that come with HDMI 2.1 @ 48GBps.

          Cheers

    • Im running the equivalent of this AVR bought some 6-8 years ago on the Voll B44 speakers that can be found on ozbargain once in awhile. Good quality speakers and relatively inexpensive.

  • Hi all, Would this work with a LG c9 tv with all the dolby atmos things ( don't really know what it means) and streaming movies from NetFlix and Disney +

Or does the optical cable our from the TV pass all the info it needs or does it have to by HDMI?

    • +3

This is an entry receiver, it wont support atmos speakers nor it has the capability to process it. But if you mean that you just want to watch it for streaming services, yes, it will do that. HDMI is preferred to pass all the sound data but if that fails(I heard C9 is kind of finicky in terms of the 4k bypass etc), optic cable will be your savior.

    • +2

This receiver is an entry level and good really for small rooms and using it as a PC surround enhancer.
With the C9, I suggest that you get a mid-level receiver (something like "at least" an RXV685) the video processing on this receiver may constrain (or better to say will not output the best possible quality) display output for the TV.
4K bypass IMO is a funny thing as electronically, the signal still needs to pass (or regenerated) from the receiver, so there is a little processing.

In relation of using a Toslink connection from the TV to the receiver, you will only get 2.1 channels output from the speaker system and not utilise the latest codecs from the receiver.

However for this price, it is a bargain.

      Cheers

    • +1

You'll get dolby digital 5.1 surround but not atmos.
I've got the LG B9 oled basically the same as the C9.. still no support for disney + 5.1 surround yet however :(

  • +4

Same price at Amazon Australia including delivery.

  • How long are the click and collect times usually?

    • At good guys it is usually available to collect within couple of hours

      • FWIW I ordered late last night and got the "it's ready to pick" email at 3.30pm. Got there at 5.45pm (didn't rush as they were open till 7pm) and was informed that the warehouse closed at 5.30pm and I'd have to come back tomorrow!

Luckily I went for a stroll, found 4 boxes on the shelf, and told them I'd just take one off the floor.

        All good in the end.

  • So what would be the easiest way to play music from my phone or computer (Spotify) wirelessly through this?

    • You can purchase an external Bluetooth module Yamaha YBA-11. This uses a coaxial connection which you can connect with the receiver wirelessly.
These are not that cheap and possibly can buy from Gumtree or eBay for around $80+
There is also another Bluetooth module such as Logitech you can purchase for around $45 however uses an RCA connection.
      Cheers

    • You can add a Google Chromecast Audio just for music(a bit hard to find one now as it is end of life product) or if you want video as well, Google Chromecast

      • Chromecast audio has an 3.5mm jack which the receiver doesn't support.
        Cheers

        • Good call. The normal chromecast will the way to go then.

          • @Volution: Cheers. Can I stream directly from my phone to the Chromecast or would I need to have the TV turned on as well?

            • +1

@Duckman: If you are listening just to music only, just leave the tv off. set the receiver's input setting to the correct HDMI slot that you put your chromecast to. EG. HDMI2 slot. Then, it's just a simple a casting the music service to the chromecast and you control the music with your phone. Have fun!

  • Would this be much of an upgrade from my Yamaha YHT-S401?

    https://www.whathifi.com/yamaha/yht-s401/review

I've been using this for the last few years and have it setup as a 5.1 system with rear speakers…

    • Hi,

I have both and this setup sounds much better.

      • Thanks, looks very tempting at this price.

I can pick it up at my local Good Guys for around $270.

Pretty good price for a 5.1 system that has a lot of good reviews.

  • +1

Can someone recommend speaker stands for the satellite speakers?

    • +1

      Seconded

    • +1

I have these and it's a great quality piece. Speaker Stands

      • Design looks good as it supports the base of the speaker.

My only concern is that it's from Amazon US and if it doesn't suit the speakers, returns/refunds might be a hassle (If there is somewhere locally at hi-fi shop or ebay with a similar design, it would be very helpful!)

Does anyone know the thread size on the back of the satellite speakers?

  • Anyone else really disappointed by the shiny and cheap plastic appearance of the speakers? I've just come to collect my purchase and am strongly considering cancelling it.

    • I think I was just expecting a matte finish and am put off by the shininess of the plastic. The subwoofer on the other hand is actually matte.

  • +1

I purchased this close to midnight on Wednesday just before the sale ended.

Picked it up Thursday afternoon and set it up that night but by the time I finished it was too late at night to give it a proper work out…

Spent most of Friday watching movies and t.v. shows and needless to say, the sound is absolutely awesome!

Previously I was using the Yamaha YHT-S401 soundbar which while good, actually one of the best soundbars I've ever, still lacked a lot when compared to a dedicated 5.1 system.

The speakers may be small and cheap looking but they sound fantastic!

Even at full price this system would be terrific but at $270, I am more than happy with this purchase.

    Highly recommended!

    • Sadly I just can't get over how glossy the speaker plastic is. I think I'm going to cancel my order and wait to find something else. So disappointing, because they do actually sound really good.

    • Was in the same situation as you. Spent a good portion of time setting it up but it was worth it. Tested it on the wildebeest scene from the Lion King (animated) and space chase scene with the Klingons from Star Trek into Darkness. Sounded awesome. Cant complain for a $272 for a base 5.1 home theatre system when compared to a more expensive sound bar set up.

Just need to find some speaker stands!

  • Is this the same receiver in this deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/508639
