My FUJI DocuPrint M225 dw died today so I was researching for a replacement. Saw HN has lowered the original price of this Epson printer and cashback makes it ideal for someone who do not print too many pages like me.

I also researched on generic ink cartridges for this model:

When you can't scan a document because you are low on a colour ink, the heavy discounts aren't worth it.

I got an Ecotank 2 years ago. Problem solved…

      • +1

Also have an EcoTank, best printer EVER!

Easily printed 3000 pages, not even half empty yet and it comes with another ink refill!!!

        • +2

I've only just bought new ink for the first time after 2 years…

      • +3

Not sure if its Epson printers, but they can eventually succumb to uncleanable head issues if not used enough.

Been through 2 Ecotanks. Spent hours trying to clean the heads manually in the end (removal, alcohol flushing, soaking - any suggestions I could find to resolve). Both in the bin.

While I had a 10 year ago canon that still worked fine.

        • Been through 2 Ecotanks. Spent hours trying to clean the heads manually

I had a problem that cleaning couldn't fix and called their support. There was some other kind of option to do a deep clean and that fixed the problem first time… As good as new after that.

      • What model do you have? I'm interested.

        • I have the 2750. Got it 2 years ago.

          • @jv: I just got a WF-2750 and transpanted the Rihac CISS from an old worn out WF-2660 into it.

    • so this model does that ?

      • +2

I don't know. I just know the supposed heavily discount ones tend to be the worst offenders. I went laser and never looked back.

      • +2

My Epson multifunction does it. Ditching it for a laser when I find a decent one.

    How much is the ink?

  • +1

Hey OP, how long have you had the Fuji Xerox for and how often did you use it? I've got the same printer and mine seems to be going strong. It's actually an excellent printer.

    • I got the same too, excellent printer

      • And me, and my dad and my brother-in-law. We all rave about this machine, it’s like a gift from a higher power.

        • you mean this or the fuji?

          • -1

@gimme: I have the Fuji Xerox M225DW and use it with a Mac Pro. I am now being asked to update the driver to 64bit by Apple. I have tried to source the drivers from Fuji Xerox website and can't seem to find it. Does anyone know if current Mac drivers are available for please, thank you.

            • @ariann: Trying to upgrade the latest firmware version K and no problem with my Mac.

    • I had it for 3 years. Today the wifi connection was not working so I turn it off for a restart. It never powered back on again…

I did also recently (stupidly) cracked open the panel to expose the circuit board to masked over the light under wifi button.May accidentally damaged the board somehow.

      • the HIBERNATION is a known problem - it could be just deep sleep - so power it right down leave it for 6 hours and try it again. keep trying - it may well wake up although why you cracked it open beats me unless you tried waiting for days to wake it up….

    • Can I concur :)

  • +2

As with most inkjets, the inks are expensive. They'll add up, especially if you don't use it that often and you have to replace one of the colours when it dries up, otherwise it won't print. The generic laser toner for the Fuji Xerox costs less than $20.

    • +4

Agree since going laser will never go back. Even if u don't print much the ink drys out in no time. Toner doesn't dry out but make sure you keep it off when not in use as I hear the machine does tests/cleaning that use toner while on standby. For years there have been crazy sounding deals on inkjets but it's just to get you into buying the ink.

      • I had lasers prior but upgraded to inktank. Much better and what inkjets should have always been.

Never had an issue with ink tank after 3000 pages and tanks are not even half used! I only learned about ink tank fairly recently Epson EcoTanks are prob the best.

        • What model exactly? I'm interested.

        • What do you print so much, out of interest?

    • +2

I do not agree with this.

The first thing before buying either Inkjet or Lazer printer is to look for if there are many cheap options of generic ink cartridges or toners in the market for your printer model.

I've been using my Epson WF-3540 for the last 7 years and it's been running very well with generic cartridges or refilled cartridges.

Ink cartridges for my above model can go for less than $1 per cartridge delivered from Melbourne.

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/25x-T138-138-T1381-ink-cartridge…

For the printer in this post, it's $21 delivered from Melbourne for 4x 100ML refilled ink bottles are very cheap. You just have to find refilled cartridges. Works out to be less than $1 per refilled cartridge. (Generally Colour ink cartridges are 13-18ml and 15-30ml for Black cartridge)

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4x100ml-Refill-Ink-for-Epson-702…

      • I have very bad skill with injects w/ syringes, even after following the youtube tutorials the cartridges always end up leaking for one reason or another. Cheap replacements are the way for me, it seems.

        • Sure. Cheap generic replacement is always better as the ink inside the unopened cartridge can also be kept for longer thanks to vacuumed packaging.

I don't know about the leaking thing. My refilled cartridges and ink bottles are super easy to refill. I've actually never had to use syringes.

My ink bottles come with a long nozzle like one in the link below. Just simply uncap the tiny silicon cap of the cartridge, then put the nozzle in and squeeze the bottle. Never leaked.

Never again an Epson for me. Barely lasts its warranty and dies for no reason. I have now two Epsons (wf 3620, 3640) sitting with motherboard errors. I finally bit the bullet and went for a colour laser. OKI 363.

    • I've had my Workforce 840 for longer than I can remember. I don't print a lot, probably go through one set of inks every 12 months at most. Has been a pretty solid unit. I have used after market inks once but they don't seem to last as long and not sure if they are that great for the unit. If I was to replace it with another inkjet I've been suggested to use a Brother since they support the use of after market inks and are overall more eco-friendly.

    • as someone whos' been in the printing industry, epson and brother are the most reliable brands out there…
entry level stuff is junk though…
      the wf3620 and wf3640 were low/entry mid range…

      • The 840 model still going strong for me. Still I bought this deal as a backup for when it dies. Expect it will just sit cupboard for few years. Hopefully when need it compatible ink is cheaper.

  • +1

I have the upgraded model of this, got it for $80 but broken twice, got it replaced the first time at a local repairer but refused to give any receipt which could extend the warranty for the replacement unit, now it is still collecting dust.

  • I have been using an Epson XP 410 for years without a problem (touch wood). I would print on average 1 x ream of paper per month. To alleviate the use of expensive replacement inks, I have installed the Rihac (www.rihac.com.au) continuous ink supply. Works well and saves a bundle on ink costs.

What is a good alternative to this printer. This is an honest question. Please can you advise?

    • +1

Any Canon printers that use PGI-650 &/or CLI-651. Old MG models (MG5560, MG5660 etc), doubt any new ones available.

  • no hacked cartridges?

  • +4

We never see deals about good multifunction Laser printers. Just cheap inkjets.
Which multifunction laser printers are people using?

    • I've had a Samsung clx6260fw colour (printer division now owned by HP) for years now. Bought it for the Google cloud print (Google is shuttering the doors on this feature) & great image reproduction for a laser.
Toner lasts well past being told it's empty.
The downside of laser multifunction printers is just how bulky they are.

I'd never buy HP though. I've got a b&W wifi printer that I can't add to my wifi because their drivers don't work with windows 10 (was apparently windows 8 compatible) and they had no interest in resolving even in the warranty period. In hindsight I should have returned it as soon as the driver issues became apparent.

  • FWIW The epson has been working fine. It isn't used a lot for printing (we have a laser) so is only just onto some new ink. Sprung for genuine off eBay with codes etc bringing total cost down almost to 'fake' ink.

    • How much it costs ?

  • +2

I'm staying away from Epson for any future printers. I'm running with a Workforce 3620 (something like that) and just going to run it until the ink runs out (already bought a set of refills…) or it breaks.

As mentioned the firmware/software on the printer is pretty crappy; from the endless clunking before it actually did anything (no idea what it's doing) and yeah things like no scanning cos no ink in one tank left (seriously?!). I think my ADF starting to go too. The Canon I could've got for the same price would've been better choice.

  • Funny. Bought a WF-4745 today for $218, so $138 after cashback by buying from HN. Cheapest price I could find before CB.
Got the Rihac XL 4 pack for just over $100 delivered from ebay.
Good deal, the cashback makes it a bargain.

does it do google cloud printing , then it's perfect!

  • Bing Lee is selling it for $139 (https://www.binglee.com.au/epson-wf-3725-workforce-pro-inkje…) see if you can get HN to match it for the extra discount!

I use generic inks from these guys https://www.ebay.com.au/str/yyudaprinterinktonercartridge , can stack with eBay discount codes too (e.g. $53.99, with $5 off code, for 2x black, and 1x CMY colours. All in high yield capacity. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/233414747132).

  • How do you guys get cheap ink? I get cheap ink from eBay and they always ruin the printer sooner or after. Printouts look bad.

  • Haven't printed a document for quite sometime now. No longer needed. Only use case left for me was how to sign a PDF. Turns out you can do it through a Phone.

    • I felt the same way too until I realised I needed to print a label when using eBay Plus and Parcelpoint to return stuff :)

(although Amazon has a no-label feature!)

      • You could always go to Officeworks for the odd single printout once every few months or years..

  • I have a WF 3530 from 5 or 6 years ago (thanks OzBargain) and it still works great. The app support has been surprisingly robust and I enjoy the apple AirPrint support over wifi, but I find with very intermittent use, the heads clog up a lot which means I need to run the inbuilt maintenance before printing and to use he highest ink quality settings to ensure the output is legible.

Never done a cashback before, how do you do it? Anything to click before purchasing or do we scan/send the receipt somewhere to get a credit?

    • +1

Generally it’s an online form and a scan or photo or your receipt.

  • Can the document feeder be used to scan multiple pages at once? And if so, does it work with both sides (duplex)?

    • Not if you use the cashback.

      • Purchase from Bing Lee also allows cash back as per Epson 's website

        • +2

"Purchase any of these selected new Epson Printers from Australian Harvey Norman, Domayne or Joyce Mayne stores only. It specifically excludes customer purchases from Epson websites or any other reseller or retailer."

Happy to be corrected, but this is directly from the Cashback link provided by Epson.

          • @matthewperk: I stand corrected. The page I read previously was from 2013… lol

    • The promotion is with HN only as per link below
      https://www.clubepson.com.au/competitions/data/index.asp

Maybe you could ask HN to price match Bing Lee price

      • I just claimed the cashback and on their form there is an option to choose retailers grom either HN, Domayne, or something else that I forgot. Not sure if all retailers get the same cashback tho

  • Any idea how many pages it can print average on single cartridge? Also not used HN cashback before, is it some link HN send after the purchase for cashback?
