    • This and the 4K google chromecast just posted seem like a good combo??

      • +1

Not 4k so a non 4k chromecast would also work. I would probably match this TV with a Vodafone TV

      • Would also go well with a 1080p Amazon Fire stick.

So you’ve never purchased this TV or used one but you’re assuming it’ll die in 12 months. Makes sense.

@MuddyClear: Your so called question, read like you were saying that it's not likely to last a year, rather than questioning it. If you'd actually worded it as question, then you wouldn't have been downvoted.

                • @MuddyClear: I think the question could've been improved?

                • +1

@MuddyClear: Holy shit mate your English is average at best. It’s quite obvious English is your second lanagage. Either that or you’re an absolute simpleton.

Looks to me to be almost exactly the same as my 'JVC' 55". Very likely they came out of the same Chinese factory, with the brand slapped on with a firmware to suit.

Mine has been working fine for over 18 months, and I have no issues with the picture quality itself (except for the blacks… coming from a Panasonic plasma) though inputs can at times struggle with switching outputs from my Vodafone TV.

      • I have the 48" JVC, and I have exactly the same switching problem with the Vodafone TV, and it doesn't happen on my Panasonic Plasma.

Who's the prime minister by the way? :)

You can get 24 months warranty with no extra cost by registering according to OP.

I paid almost 6x as much for an LG that died within a year. I dont think anything is built to last anymore.

  • Aiwa used to be a good brand decades ago but I suspect the name has been sold a la Akai etc For 285 it's still good value

    • +4

It was discontinued a long time ago by Sony. Name is just licensed now.

    • +2

Yep, Aiwa is like Akai, Polaroid, Kodak, Sansui, etc. Just a badge slapped for 20 cents onto the cheapest stuff from China.

      • Just miss my old Akai audio deck!

Made good walkmans once upon a time.

Awesome price for 50" - 4k is usually not relevant when dealing in the super budget sector anyway

    • +1

Yep. 1080p is quite adequate for a TV of this size.

      • +1

It depends on how far away you sit from it. If you sit closer to it, the difference between FHD and 4K on a 50" screen can be very noticeable. If it's far away across the room, it can look the same.

        • +1

Get what you mean, but could not help thinking about how long is a piece of string, especially if your eyesight is not as good as it used to be lol.

        • By close you mean one meter? Because you need to be that close to notice 4k on a 50 inch screen. Compared to 1080p at 2 meters.

Hmm, that chart says 1.5 meters. The chart also does not take into account how good your eyes are. People with very good vision can perceive more detail.

It also depends on what you're watching. If you're watching ABC in 576p, then there's not going to be much difference - they'll both look terrible. If you're watching a non-animated Bluray movie, it depends on how sharp the director wants the film to look, and how good the upscaler in the TV is. If you're watching an animated 4K movie or using the TV as a computer monitor, you'll almost definitely see a difference from more than 1.5 meters away - depending on how good your eyes are.

  • 1 year warranty offered but can’t you dispute it up to around 2-5 years give Australia consumer law or something ? Unless this is some overseas product of sorts?

    • +2

Indeed the ACCC tells everybody not to spend money on extended warranties but when it comes to the crunch it is extremely hard to get them to action on a $285 item.
If you register it and it says 2 years you find they just reverse the financial transaction if the claim is proven during that time. E-tailers have it easier than briks and mortar stores.

    • +2

consumer law is a bit nebulous. 2yrs you'd probably have a shot at replacement or money back. Beyond that I suspect at best you'd only get compensated for the depreciated value of the tv.

      • Think your both right,…or somewhere in between.

      • +1

The cost is a big part of it. Yes it is a TV, but it's a budget one. For a laptop I got, the accc classed higher cost laptops as more deserving than a single year warranty.

Aiwa is the sound I make when I stub my toe

        AIWA!

          The caps helped. Thank you.

  • hang on…is this cheapest ever price you could pay for a 50 inch 1080p telly?? truly a steal for a random room telly.

    • +1

      Well… this 49" 4K TV has been $284 twice. And $179 once.

      • Mine came DOA, but got a full refund.

        • My friend got his fine and is happily using it now.
Mine came with two light scratches on the screen. I was given the option of returning it or getting a $40 refund. I asked for a $60 refund which they gave. Pretty satisfied with that.

  • Set it up in spare room for parents who are happy with it. Not a bad telly for $250 or whatever it cost after cashback.
