[PC] Epic - Free - Celeste (rated at 97% positive on Steam) - Epic Store

1740

The next freebie is here.

Today it is: Celeste

Yes, I know this has been given out before but the teaser image is identical to the one on the game and it is a game made by Matt Makes Game - Celeste is the only game fitting the two criteria.
Maybe they have extra copies or back by popular demand - who knows.

From the website:

Help Madeline survive her inner demons on her journey to the top of Celeste Mountain, in this super-tight, hand-crafted platformer from the creators of multiplayer classic TowerFall.

A narrative-driven, single-player adventure like mom used to make, with a charming cast of characters and a touching story of self-discovery
A massive mountain teeming with 700+ screens of hardcore platforming challenges and devious secrets
Brutal B-side chapters to unlock, built for only the bravest mountaineers
IGF “Excellence in Audio” finalist, with over 2 hours of original music led by dazzling live piano and catchy synth beats

The controls are simple and accessible - simply jump, air-dash, and climb - but with layers of expressive depth to master, where every death is a lesson. Lightning-fast respawns keep you climbing as you uncover the mysteries of the mountain and brave its many perils.

This is it, Madeline. Just breathe. You can do this.

Enjoy

Certainly allot of friends missed it the first time and its one of those games you should'nt miss.

interesting how come my epic client shows me Ape Out as todays free game? I already own celeste by the way

    • +1

Yeah I got Ape Out too, not Celeste.

      • -1

Same I got Ape Out, weird.

    • +6

      Says tomorrow.

      • +1

The time period for Ape Out is the same as the one listed here for Celeste.

  • +5

If they giving out Celeste free again, really hope they give out subnautica free again. Missed out on that one.

    • it's on game pass if you have that.

I made a mistake of buying it earlier this year. I played four levels and have no desire to ever come back to it. For me this is a definitely try before you buy game.

    • +5

I'd suggest giving it another go. I bought it a while back, tried it, couldn't get into it at all, left it to play other things and went back to it later. I bounced off it 2 or 3 times before it finally clicked for me and then I just smashed through the entire thing over christmas / new year last year. Absolutely loved it, possibly the best game I've played in the past year.

    • the part where her shadow chases you for about 5 minutes is crazy

    • isn't there like an 'easy' mode now?

      • +1

It has an "assist" mode which lets you modify specific aspects of it e.g. reduced game speed, infinite stamina, invincibility, etc. It recommends that you try to finish without the assists (which is what I eventually did, and I'm glad I did it), but it's there if you want it.

Personally, it wasn't the difficulty that put me off (although it is pretty damn hard at times), I just didn't really "get it" ie I was sitting there wondering why I was playing yet another retro-looking platformer when I had so many other games I could be playing. For whatever reason, it finally got its hooks into me on the 3rd or 4th time I tried to get into it. I probably wouldn't have bothered going back repeatedly like that if I hadn't kept reading about how brilliant it was.

Looks like the leaked list was wrong then

  • I'm so glad that are redoing this! It's one of the few Epic freebies I missed the first time.

  • I've already got all the previous free games and have no desire to see repeats. Lets hope the next game is something new.

Hard to imagine that, after all these awesome giveaways, on Christmas of all days they would choose a not particularly good title to regift. Seems odd.

    • This is the hyped AAA game that was rumoured? Maybe new years day is the big one.

    • +2

      "a not particularly good title"

Metacritic ranges from 88%-94%, depending on the platform. It might not be to your personal taste, but it is a very good title.

      • Sure, each to their own but it's hardly the rumoured AAA game, and not even the best of the previous give aways. They've not repeated one title the whole year but choose Christmas to do so? Seems odd.

        • Probably because it'll be Christmas Eve in most of the world

  • This is pure speculation.

Despite the supporting evidence this should not be posted as a deal, at least not with the current title and description. You cannot say for sure that it will be Celeste that is given away.

    • +1

It's not pure speculation, apart from the image on the website, on their API it tells you the developer of the next free game, which is "matt makes games"

      link

      • +1

Unless Epic updates their store from saying "?????" to "Celeste", then it is speculation.

        • +1

yeah but nah. That developer has 3 games total, one has already been given away for free, the other is freeware and celeste is their only game which coincidentally is dated for christmas.

        • +6

I don't understand why posting things early presents such a problem to some people.
If people know in advance they can decide not to buy the game so it is actually helpful to know.

          • +1

@Lysander: I'm actually greatfull for the early post. I wanted to buy and play this game next year, if it wasn't posted early I would have missed it for free.

            • +1

@bazzato: Great. I am happy it is useful and helped you.
              Enjoy the Christmas break.

  • Anything else think Epic will introduce a subscription at some point in order to maintain access to any previous free games you have against your account, like PS Plus?

    • +3

What do you mean? Once you claim the game it stays in your account ""forever"". These games aren't only to play for 24 hours, they're yours to keep.

    • +3

No. They might introduce some kind of subscription along the lines of PS+ or Game Pass or Humble Bundle or whatever for "free" games in the future, but they're not going to apply it retrospectively to stuff they've already given away in the past. Not only would it be stupid in terms of alienating the entire customer base, I'm pretty sure it would be illegal to give them away "free forever" and then turn around and demand you pay them money to be able to keep them.

  • Hmmm, TABS tomorrow by the looks of it. Maybe the leaked list is half right?

  • Regift!
