    25/Jan is Chinese New Year, a real-discount.

I thought reverse herringbone was my skiing technique.

    • +4

      That would hurt

    No return fare available.
T&C's "some organs my be confiscated for research purpose." :)

  • seems one-way economy $260 only, shanghai has 6 day visa free policy for Australian if you fly to another country other than Australia.

But only if you book an onward flight. Tip could be to book an expensive first or business class flight which has free cancellation (does this even exist? I do for hotels sometimes for creating visas etc.).

  • nice found

  • Actually it's a reasonable price. Cuz 25/1 is Chinese new year, almost no Chinese people gonna go back to China later than 1/24. However, it's a pretty nice fare for travellers.

As far as I know, mainland China will not grant visa to shitholes. In any case I don't think you are allowed to visit that country.

        what a burn!

You have hurt the feelings of the CCP.

      Hong Kong ftw!

  • Seems to be $1500 off the normal price.

  • +11

is it one way because you never come back from China?

    • +4

      finally someone who reads T&Cs

    • +2

Well, that explains why their population is so massive.

  • Any ideas on how to make the most of this without having to pay for a visa (~$200 alone)?

Would the 6 day visa waiver work if the continuing travel is back to Australia?

    • +1

No, travel has to be on to a 3rd country, not return to origin.

      • +3

Fly on to Taiwan, much cleaner country

    • No, definition of transit means that you’re passing thorough to go some where else.

If you travel from Australia to China and back to Australia you not qualify for transit visa.

(Unless you have refundable ticket to Hong Kong, Japan etc)

      • If HK is considered a third country, would a 2-leg flight booking from Shanghai to AU via HK be considered travelling to a third country? Or would I have to break up the 2-legs into 2 separate bookings?

        • +1

Yes. Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan all have their own immigration so are considered for this programme to be a third country. You could go BNE > PVG (6 days or less) > HKG and you would be fine. You can't just go straight back to Australia.

I did this twice last year out of PEK and didn't have any issue, although have a copy of the IATA rules on this and the onward booking confirmation as check-in people in Australia don't always know about this and might try to stop you from checking in.

        • +7

you seriously want to take this up, going to a country you don't even want to visit, and spending even more money on added flights just for a comfortable 10 hour flight?

Use that money hiring a masseuse, or buy a nice chair and sit in that.

These new herringbone configured seats are excellent. I flew China Eastern 2 months ago all the way to Europe (on Qantas points), the seats are very comfortable, I could even use my wireless NC headphones to pair with my seat/IFE (although that was only on the A350 from memory). Food was disappointing and service was fine.

    • This fly is showing as 2-2-2 business class, acceptable for the price I suppose. You can earn QF points however no status credits

      • In that case, it’s not a harringbone seat as OP wrote. I must say I don’t mind a 2-2-2 config either. Although less privacy (when travelling solo), you have a lot more knee and foot space which makes sleeping more comfortable, especially for taller side-sleepers.

  • you probably wouldn't want to go to China during CNY. Just saying.

65 upvotes. I doubt 65 of you will fit into business class.

they can share and take turns

  • Chinese New Year is not a time to be in China. You think Sydney peak hour is bad…

    • +3

The rush leading up to Chinese new year is busy, but during actual new year it is very quiet. Everyone's gone home to be with their families.

      • Wow someone who actually knows stuff

  • flight could end up on 1-2-1 seating.

  • This also works return and under $1,200, other destinations as well such as Beijing.
