Long time lurker, first time poster.

Been waiting for a good deal on the RPi4 (4GB) for the longest time, and this is the cheapest price I could find.

  • Any rumours about a hardware revision release?

    • +2

This revision came out only a few months ago. They tend to take a while.

      • Really, what changed, link?

        • +9
          • Bluetooth 5.0
          • 2x micro-HDMI (4K60 support on both)
          • 1.5GHz SoC
          • Gigabit Ethernet
          • USB 3.0 (5Gbps)
          • H265 support
          • USB-C power
          • PoE support (with additional PoE HAT)
    • doubt it no

    • they work fine if you have an existing 5.1v micro usb power supply and use a micro to c adapter, or you get the raspberry pi usb c power supply. i haven’t had issues myself but haven’t tried usb-c PD supplies. nice thing about the new pi usb c power supply is that it is 3 amps if you want to load up the pi with expansions on either IO pins or the usb ports.
nice extra if you get combined postage to also get the pi usb c power supply.

1gb vs 2gb vs 4gb and price rises, the 1gb is competitive in price to the pi3b+ and a worthy successor , it is the 4gb that is expensive , and possibly a waste if you don’t need the 4gb, and can make do with the 1gb or 2 go models e.g building a retro pi …… we went with 4gb.

      • It's of note that the gpu memory is shared with main memory, which might make the 1gb model a little tighter depending on what you want to do with it.

      • I think the point is the guy may want the revised one that was suppose to apparently fix the USB-PD issue rather than purchase one with the known flaw. Not that hard to work around however as pointed out.
Only thing held me back from buying was the lack of 4k H264 support, thats only reserved for H265 which isnt widely used just yet.

    • There is a 1.2 revision of the board that's starting to trickle out.

I do not believe it is functionally different from the 1.1 board.

    • +1

Yes, I can confirm there's a new 1.2 release, it seems to have fixed the USB-C issues.

  • +1

Wow, I was literally just looking for one of these 2 hours ago. Good job OP.

    • +1

me too , i came across one on ebay and it turns out to be a local perth seller which was good for me, although i cant find an address even though you can local pick up…http://www.logicware.com.au/

i dont know much about these but i am surprised they are always sold in kit form and never ready to go built…

      • +5

The reason they're sold like this is because there are so many options for how to use them and how to configure them.

As for the company, they're based in Forrestfield 6058 by the looks of it.

  • +4

It is a little unfair to compare with this limited quantity refurbished PC but have the prices of the Raspberry Pi series risen too much?

    • +3

      Not unfair.

The prices have jumped because the specs jumped a lot with it - this is the maxxed out rpi4, which also has a 1gb, 2gb version

    • +3

With intel graphics 4600 on that Dell refurbished SFF, you can forget about 4K 60Hz support, any form of standard 4K video hardware encoding support.

That said RPi 4 still needs better support on 4K videos. So if you only care about 1080p, higher power consumption, and happy with a bulkier setup, dirt cheap refurbished PC is better.

    • Also keep in mind that a Pi will be sweating bullets in our summer, whereas the PC will have an easier time.

    • +2

Did you really just compare a 3 inch micro computer with a SFF Optiplex?

    • Nop, two different intention. RP is not a PC replacement.

    • Depends what you want to do with it - keep in mind there's the Pi Zero if you need something cheap.

      • Is there any good Raspberry Pi kits that can handle pihole and be a Samba NAS? What level Pi should I look at?

        • Pihole yes, no idea about Samba NAS, sorry.

        • Any raspberry pi should do. Samba would be OS dependent. It should be easy using Ubuntu.

        • Dunno about Samba but I host Pi Hole on both a Pi 4 (Running HASS IO additionally) as well as a standalone instance on a Pi Zero. The 4 is a bit snappier UI wise, but the Pi Zero works fine for PiHole.

        • Pi hole will run on any pi, for NAS function, you will be better served by the pi4 with gigabit LAN and more USB3 bandwidth, but may also need to get a case that has active cooling.

Hmm, this or a second had steam link for streaming games to TV…

    • Literally just wondering this.

I have a Steam Link and it requires either a solid wifi connection or ethernet cable to work smoothly. Once setup it's great, but running Kodi etc tends to push it's limits. I assume a Pi would handle a broad range of tasks better… Anyone?

  • Can someone link the suited power supply and what case do people recommend?

    • I use mobile phone charger

    • +1

If you're willing to spend a bit the FLIRC case is super nice and the unit acts as a heat sink. It doesn't support using a POE hat though.

      • +1

I was looking at the FLIRC case but the damn thing blocks the GPIO port which is a bit of a bummer. I'm now looking at the Argon ONE case which acts as a heatsink much like the FLIRC, has a fan included, routes all the inputs/outputs to one side and still has a nice magnetic lid to access the GPIO port.

        • Also using the Argon ONE case which gives much better temperatures than the cheap Ebay case with a small fan. A USB-C equipped POE adapter has been trouble free for the power side of things.

Not a deal, this is the usual price for 4GB RasPi4 at Element14.

    Also cheaper here by $0.22:
    https://au.rs-online.com/web/p/processor-microcontroller-dev…
Again, this is the usual price at RS Components.

    • +4

I'd probably suggest the extra 22 cents if you want it to ship from AU or need it in a pinch, I bought one from RS and it ended up shipping from the UK.

      • True. At the moment RS only has global stock which means shipping from overseas.

  • I have had a pi server and 2 media centres running since the first pi's came out. Recently a lot of the devs have been dropping support for the realtek WiFi dongles, so my media centre now only works over Ethernet, and with my new 4k TV, the 720p videos I've got are looking less and less good but the pi struggles with 1080p. Sadly I think it's about time I upgraded but it's all so expensive now 😭.

    • +1

This is the maxed out version with 4GB of RAM. If you need less than that you can get versions with less RAM a fair amount cheaper.

  • +1

I use this as Pi Hole + Algo VPN

    • +5

I got these running with pi zero $9

      • +1

Same, the pi4 is overkill for this

      • How do you get it working on pi zero? Or is it about zero w?

        • +1

Just pi zero, I used Ethernet to usb converter to connect it to modem, from ebay like $2.

    • Does Pi hole do a better job then extensions for your browser? Currently using uBlock Origin

      • +2

Pi hole also blocks ads on phone and smart TV and chromecast etc etc

        • Might give it a shot, just realized I can run it on my NAS via Docker! Need another excuse to buy a Raspberry Pi now…

      • Use both, especially if you have mobile devices and don't want to VPN to your home network when you're away.

  • U guys mainly use this as pc?

    • +1

I use one pi for PiHole, VPN, Torrents, Proxy Server, Torrents and Home Assistants as docker contains. This is not a PC replacement, although you can use for basic things.

  • -1

    This is normal price.

    • Care to back this up with evidence?

      • This is elements14s normal price.

  • It's saying I need to put in my business details to order, do I just make something up?

    • Use your work address and details?

      • Says it ships to there and I don't start up again until late Jan (I teach). Hmmmm.

  • +1

I caved in and ordered, I will update this thread, when I find what revision it is (1.0, 1.1 or 1.2)

1.2 may mean it'll work fine with any USB power supply.

  • I can confirm or should I say, deny these guys shipping ver 1.2 devices

So you'll have possible USB C power issues, maybe.
    Otherwise it's fine of course

  • +1

"Your order is subject to credit check and authorisation."

Looking at terms it says it is business to business sale only. For Personal use, they force you to use resellers such as Core electronics.

I have put in my work address though. Lets see. Free shipping was the main catch plus genuine power supply under $12.

    Thanks OP
