Lol that’s some of the dumbest shit I’ve ever read

        • +5

Is he dumb? Sir Stephen Hawking (perhaps the world's most famous cosmologist) stated: "The remarkable fact is that the values of these numbers (i.e. the constants of physics) seem to have been very finely adjusted to make possible the development of life" (p. 125).

I can quote a long list of atheist who won't think it's the dumbest thing ever. So of the most intelligent atheist.

          • +1

@gto21: "seem" is the key word here; the fine-tuning argument can be debated ad nauseum.

            • @todayssawyer: Maybe you will prefer this quote: "Wherever physicists look, they see examples of fine-tuning." Sir Martin Rees (cosmologist and astrophysicist). Like I said I can quote several people. It's not the dumbest thing or just biased as some claim.

      • +5

Also how life came to be on earth. For earth to have somehow not have life at one stage and then through the right conditions, suddenly develop life i.e. bacteria from a compound? It is impossible to explain the process of abiogensis.

      • And what are the 5 reasons again? I only see 5 points personally biased.

        • +2

Is he biased as well? "So, in a world without God, there can be “… no evil and no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.” (Richard Dawkins, Atheist" I can quote a long list of the most intelligent atheist.

      • +3

        2) God is the best explanation for morality. Because if you don't believe in God, nothing is objectively wrong, it is all subjective

I've never understood this argument. If you don't think you'd have any morality without God, then that sounds more like a damning self-burn, rather than proof that an all-knowing creator must exist.

Plenty of people live without religion/God/faith/etc and still manage to be good kind people. Because they want to be. Not because a book told them to.

        • The moral argument is not that you don't have any morality. An atheist can do good things. The moral argument is not that an atheist can't do good things - that's not the argument. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxiAikEk2vU

        • The argument is that you don't need to believe in God to be good or kind. It's just that God would have to exist for something to be objectively good or evil.

At uni, god's chosen would visit the dorms, recruiting.
We would be prepared with vibrators to mix our drinks.
After beginning their pitch, they'd suddenly run out the door for no known reason😂
        They never came back😉

        • +1

          Calm down there edge-lord.

          • +2

@J4ckal: Oh, we were very calm, after a long laugh😀
It was a very effective strategy. Plus small vibrators make great drink stirrers.
Bought us a year of peace🕊

But sending kids straight out of school with no life experience, uninvited into people's homes, to covert hardened science post-grads & others - was pointless.

Have heard of people opening the door naked - another effective move. I was speechless when that happened to me during my volunteer work!

But experienced religious callers are rarely put off.

            • @INFIDEL: I know quite a few bible bashers who built massive confidence by going through what they did. They have become excellent salesmen and entrepreneurs. The science post-grads who I know though have gone on to become excellent Uber drivers and swimming instructors. For the missionaries, converting people is only one aspect of what they do. When you talk of life experience - going to live away from your parents, in a foreign land, becoming self-reliant and staying away from the temptations which destroy so many young people, it is something that would have made me a lot better off.

              • +2

@Dentshop: Ah the people I knew are not the ones you are discussing😉

Those students in their first week of uni kept barging in uninvited into the lounge where we lived. They were convinced they had a right to be in our home - because of their religious upbringing. They showed no respect, so why should we?

We were in our rights to evict them or call security. We chose a softer & more effective path, with humour.
Strange they seemed to know a simple white vibrating cylinder was not what they wanted to see. I wonder where they learnt about vibrators? We kept one purely as a conversation starter & to mix drinks at our parties🍸
Word quickly got around not to bother us😉

I was on the Graduate Employment Committee, with the VC. Those science post grads made the highest income of all students after leaving uni - usually not in their field, but in finance, working around the world! It was the time of hedge-funds & derivatives! A golden time for Mathematicians & investment companies😉

I've met many missionaries overseas & here. Their different choice has interested me. We often chat.

Met Mormons on the streets of Tokyo. I was on my way to the Sento (bathhouse) to soak, but realised that would not be allowed for them. Trying to convert locals while refusing to be part of the culture is rarely successful. They had no cultural training & were asking me for help understanding why people politely took their literature, but never came to their meetings.

Even met Aftrican missionaries in Islington, London, trying to convert those heathens. The women attending the African service wore so brightly coloured clothes I couldn't say no when they invited me in. A wonderfully different experience! Full of Aftrican storytelling & laughter.

But if you say it is just a training ground for sales jobs, that is disappointing!😉

                • +2

@INFIDEL: The barging in part is very poor form and unacceptable. I wouldn't have any of that, in fact it is very un-Christian behaviour. I too have met missionaries while working in Korea and Japan - you have to admire their perseverance as well as their ability to speak a foreign language so well at 21 years of age. I wouldn't say their missions were just training for sales, what I meant was that the usual rejections that can cripple some people are water off a ducks back for them. As someone who has worked in finance, you know how valuable good sales staff are and the life of a good salesman is a lot like being a missionary. Long trips away from family, cold calls, expert listening skills, follow ups and promising better outcomes.

                  • +2

@Dentshop: I think we understand each other. Living away from family at that age is difficult. So I also admire them. I'm always willing to chat with people who treat me with respect.

Sometimes an unexpected event (like the vibrator!) becomes a good story & a learning experience. I've had some training in the traditional storytelling art of Rakugo in Japan. It is a way of teaching moral tales in a simple way. Often different cultures have similar ways to teach important lessons. Locals tell me I show them great respect through my use of their traditions. But I'm just curious & learning.

                    • +2

@INFIDEL: I have never understood the nuance of Rakugo. I've tried but it never clicked for me. The local onsen was a favourite spot for me on winter evenings. Most foreigners want nothing to do with being naked around others but I never minded. So many Japanese traditions are being lost now and will be gone in 30 years time so I tried to be open-minded about the way they do things.

                      • +2

@Dentshop: Japanese are too polite, so my performances were always praised. They seemed to like my nuance😉
But in class, we were taught to be ruthless in our criticism, to train without mercy. The face should be at a precise angle. Very Japanese. The 2 faces - one on public display, the other kept very private. It taught me more about the culture & people, than the art form.

Rakugo takes a lifetime of training. So I opted for English language Rakugo. My language skills are very poor. I hung out with a professional Rakugo performer - another Foreigner. I realised I would never be as good as people said I was😿
Still appeared performing on TV & on posters promoting Rakugo performances. Locals followed me around Nara-Koen & elsewhere, keeping a respectful distance😉 Respect is vital there.

As for traditions dying out, was introduced to the last traditional scissor maker in Japan. No local person would become his apprentice, so a French guy moved to Japan to train. Amazing skills in this area South of Osaka where swords used to be made by hand. A dying art. But, as Japanese tell me - Foreigners will never understand Japan.

As for the wonders of the natural Onsen!!! As Foreigners, we don't appreciate the beauty of soaking for hours. During disasters, a mobile Sento is moved in by the Army! It's that important to people in Japan.
My rice farmer friend (small village of 200 North of Kyoto, in mountains by sea) invited me to stay this winter - and soak at his amazing local Onsen. Nothing is like soaking in a Rotenburo with snow falling on my face! Both his daughters have just had babies! Sadly I had to say no - family commitments.

There are so many aspects & depths to traditional cultures. Most visitors only see the superficial.

Happy to meet a fellow traveller who appreciates life's differences.

                        • +2

@INFIDEL: I used to live in Sakai, the area south of Osaka you mentioned. Whenever people visited me we would go to the local knife museum where you can see the swordsmith ply his trade. My mum bought a kitchen knife from there which is so sharp she is too scared to use it. I did love living there but life in Japanese cities can be very soul crushing - but that is for another thread at another time. All the best for your new year.

                          • +2

@Dentshop: Yes, Sakai. Love the Knife Museum! That's where I met the scissor Master!!
I studied Rakugo in Tenoji - a tram ride to the North.
                            I prefer rural Japan.
                            Memories😀

                            Enjoy your year ahead!

          • -1

@J4ckal: So you condone 17-18 year olds repeatedly entering inside a person's home without permission, refusing to leave our lounge room until they've finished their religious evangelism, insulting the occupants without bothering to know us, & telling us we're going to hell…
For having an interest in & studying Science!

When we were home, we kept our door unlocked to encourage discussion. People would see my light on at 3am & pop in for a chat.

But what they repeatedly did was not discussion - it was abuse.

What narrow minded bigotry from people who believed only what they were told & hadn't yet lived their lives in all its complex & beautiful splendour.

I mainly felt sad for them. Why were they at University, to shout but not listen or think?

Simply telling them to leave our home or calling security just led to more shouting of their beliefs. It was very disrespectful.

I usually enjoy chatting with all people but that was unacceptable behaviour, deserving a little bit of shock.

My simple subtle action (turning on a very basic plastic tube vibrator - kept in the kitchen to mix drinks) was the only thing that finally stopped them.

They already considered we were in league with the devil for studying Science! So it's probably what they expected!

Strange those goodie goodies knew what a vibrator was! Otherwise it would have had no effect on them. (It was the cheapest most basic model that didn't even have look like a penis!) What had they been up to?😉

As has been the case many times before, those who decry the loudest about others Sins, may be themselves the greater sinners.

Now if I could only remember a Bible verse about that (John.8)😊

  • +2

Does it have any Leviticus or Deuteronomy quotes?

I'm not interested if it doesn't have stuff about calling gay people abominations or suggesting that rape victims be executed.

    • +2

I dunno, but Israel Folau ordered 100.

    • -6

Did you know that existence of actual evil is evidence for God.

You would have to be an atheist for there to be actually nothing objectively evil with rape etc.

      • +6

The sad thing is that he is actually serious.

      • +6

You need to be locked up for public safety.

I know rape is wrong because I have a functioning brain. It seems like you're saying that you don't think rape is wrong - you're just not doing it because you think God doesn't like it (though with the Bible promoting rape, I'm not sure where you get that impression from).

In which case, if you ever lose your faith then we're all in danger…

        • +3

You need to be locked up for public safety.

LOL, what for exactly? Because he has a different opinion on morality?

I know rape is wrong because I have a functioning brain.

So is that just simply your opinion or is it objectively wrong? Where does your sense of what's right and wrong come from?

In which case, if you ever lose your faith then we're all in danger…

Why? I think a big reason why humans generally don't do the "wrong" thing is because there's punishment for breaking the law.

          https://www.gotquestions.org/Bible-rape.html

If you think morality is subjective, then any thing any one does is "good" simply because they think it is?

          • @ozhunter: No, because he just said the only thing stopping him from raping others is his belief that God disapproves of it.

Though we all know he's lying because religious people very rarely ACTUALLY believe the religion they claim to, if we take him at his word, he's a danger to society.

I'm not a great philosophical thinker so I'm not too sure how you would accurately define "objectively wrong". My layman definition would be that it causes unnecessary harm to a sentient being so is objectively wrong. Though I'm not sure you could definitely call it "objective".

I'd be willing to wager there's only a punishment for breaking the law in a very small minority of cases. I can definitely go out and break several laws right now with complete confidence I wouldn't get caught and therefore receive no punishment. Very few of my morals are based on what the law says (and there are countless laws I find reprehensible and immoral).

            • -1

              @callum9999:

No, because he just said the only thing stopping him from raping others is his belief that God disapproves of it.

He said it is objectively wrong and that atheists think it is only subjectively wrong.

if we take him at his word, he's a danger to society.

If anything, I'd be more concerned about atheists, as if it's only their own personal thinking that something is considered wrong, then that could change at any time.

I'm not a great philosophical thinker

I could almost guarantee that I'm worse.

My layman definition would be that it causes unnecessary harm to a sentient being so is objectively wrong. Though I'm not sure you could definitely call it "objective".

That's subjective. What if I thought causing harm is actually good? Are each of our opinions good, evil, or just neutral? To what standard would we measure it against?

I'd be willing to wager there's only a punishment for breaking the law in a very small minority of cases

To clear up my last comment on this bit. The potential punishment would deter people from breaking the law. If there were no laws, I'd think people would generally be nice, because as the Christian sees it that God has put His law in our heart and mind. Hebrews 10:16.

Simply put, we think the immaterial thing called our conscience and our sense of right and wrong couldn't exist without God.

        • What's worse is that he said rape was objectively evil and a bunch of people voted him down for it. I wonder what they got up to on the weekend?

      • +2

How do you explain the sexual abuse perpetrated by priests, most prominently the Catholic church?

Whether one is religious or an atheist does not determine whether they believe rape is objectively wrong.

You can pay for your own customized calendar. But get a better translation which uses "lay with" not "rape". Since it's a better translation in the context of other text. It's a really good idea, all the pro-sodomite activist should do those calendar and distribute them for free.

    • +4

You usually have to trade in all common sense and scientific knowledge.

      • +8

Science is a method used to test falsifiable hypotheses. Thus you do not trade in "science" when embarking on philosophical and/or spiritual endeavors.

      • +5

all common sense and scientific knowledge.

        Einstein believed in God…

        • +2

          Indeed, many famous scientists did

          • +1

@FireRunner: Did these scientists have 'common sense and scientific knowledge.' ?

        • Einstein stated that he believed in the pantheistic God of Baruch Spinoza. He did not believe in a personal God who concerns himself with fates and actions of human beings, a view which he described as naïve.
